In case you're new here, we recently introduced a new line of jewelry called Alaska Charms. Alaska Charms is a line of towns, villages, rivers, parks, whatever can be found on a map, around Alaska set into cabochons for the charm. Alaska Charms contains a bracelet, necklace, and earrings, and you do not have to purchase as a set. The bracelet is paperclip chain with the option of two clasps, a toggle and bar and a keychain clasp, and I can easily fit up to seven charms on the bracelet. You can choose no charms or up to seven per bracelet. Not only have we introduced the Alaska Charms bracelet , but we've branched into earrings. We've had quite a few folks ask if we make earrings, and the answer is now yes! We have two styles of earring, balloon ear wires and marquise earring hooks. You can mix and match whatever charms you wish, or you can have two of the same. Before you ask, yes, we are making necklaces, too! I know it’s about 5 feet deep because I’m 5 feet tall. If I stand on my tippy toes, tilt my head all the way back, I can keep my nose above water in the deepest end. LOL! Want to see dog musher’s in action? Fairbanks! There’s more dogsledding tours than you can shake a stick at. Want to see a baseball game played at midnight? Fairbanks! They're baaaack! The Sandhill Cranes that is! These bracelets were inspired by the Sandhill Cranes that would visit the bog at the home of one of my favorite YouTube channels, @simplelivingalaska. After seeing these gorgeous birds and hearing their loud calls, I had to make a Sandhill Crane bracelet! Alaskan Inspiration: Sandhill cranes are among Alaska’s largest birds. They are wading birds that have long black legs, long necks, and black chisel-shaped bills. Adults stand almost three feet (0.9 m) tall and have a wing span of six feet (1.8 m) or more. Mature birds are an ash-gray color with a bright red forehead. You may have seen a mass migration of Sandhill Cranes, but did you know they are solitary most of the year? Their migration to Alaska signals that spring is here! Alaskan Interpretation: We have chosen several beads matched, both wooden and druzy, with leather to represent the Sandhill Crane. Looking at the face of the Sandhill Crane, you’ll see that patch of bald, red skin on the crown. The red crown is represented by two Rosewood wooden beads. Their feathers are ash-gray in adult birds, so we have mixed in gray waxed wooden beads, gray druzy beads, and small gold druzy beads to show off the beautiful plumage of one of Alaska’s largest bird. May 4, 1911 – At Cordova, a group of residents, irate because nearby coal fields had been closed to entry, shoveled a quantity of Canadian coal from the wharf into the bay. According to the Resolution, "as part of his progressive thinking, President Theodore Roosevelt issued an executive order in 1906 prohibiting additional coal mining within the public domain of Alaska." You'll remember that we were not yet a state. That wouldn't come for another 53 years. When Howard Taft became president, he continued with the policies of President Roosevelt. Alaskans were none too happy, and Cordova residents decided to have a Cordova Coal Party reminiscent of the Boston Tea Party. Alaska is blessed with enormous energy reserves. Alaskans are very protective of those and proud of them, too. Alaskans are also a very passionate and fiery bunch. Why? You have to be to live here. Birkenstock sandals and clogs come with a light coating of cork sealer on the exposed cork edge. This protects the cork and prevents it from drying out. The Bluethroat birds will be returning to Alaska the end of May, but you can wear your own Bluethroat Birds of Alaska bracelet any time you want! Alaskan Inspiration: The Bluethroat is a tiny little bird with a brightly colored throat that’s only found on the Alaskan tundra. There are other Bluethroats around Europe and Asia, but you’ll only spot a Bluethroat in North America up north, Alaska and the Yukon in Canada. He’s about 5” long, and he weighs between .5 and .8 ounces. About the size of a robin. This is not a bird you are going to easily spot as they like to hide out. You will have much better luck spotting one if it’s flying or singing. They are shy and secretive, so you better have a lot of patience. The Alaska Department of Fish & Game has locations on their website where you can possibly spot a Bluethroat. According to Exoticbirds(dot)life, “Although it is known as the Bluethroat, many prefer to call it by the literal translation of its scientific name: Swedish nightingale.” There are 11 subspecies of Bluethroat around the world. The only difference is how much blue they have on their throat. They forage on the ground eating insects for food. They will occasionally eat seeds or berries in season. Alaskan Interpretation: The center bright blue lava stone disc (hello, aromatherapy!) and two gold beads on either side represents the bright blue and orange throat of the Bluethroat. The white bone beads represent the small white area on the sides of their necks, the white stripe over their eyes, and their white breast. The gray druzy and the gold druzy beads represent the feathers and colors on their bodies. The 4 faceted brass beads represents the flash of orange on their tail feathers. Wear Your Alaska! I've been sitting here this evening watching the Black-Capped Chickadees flitting between the suet, the lilac trees, and the woods. They're so cute! Alaskan Inspiration: The Black-Capped Chickadee is a very familiar bird to Alaskans. They don’t migrate in the winter, and you will even spot them up in Fairbanks, where it’s very cold and dark. They’re tough little birds. According to the Alaska Department of Fish & Game, the Black-Capped Chickadee has “black cap and bib, white cheeks, soft gray back, wing feathers gray edged with white, and soft buffy-colored underparts grading to white in the center.” I read something very interesting. I’ve always wondered how these little songbirds, Chickadees, Nuthatches, etc. stay warm during the cold winters. They will put on 10% of body fat every day, and then they burn that 10% of body fat at night to stay warm. Oh, how nice that must be!! As I was researching the Black-Capped Chickadee, I read something that struck me. They’re small birds. They are about 4.7-5.9 inches and only weighing in .3-.5 ounces. That’s little. I read a comment that though they’re little birds, they have a big personality. That’s so true! Alaskan Interpretation: I took the big personality as my jumping off point. After making several prototypes of bracelets, we decided that the one using the bigger beads really stood out to match that big personality. The three polished Black Agate in the center represent the black cap on their head, which is where they get their name. On either side of that I used a single white Howlite. The white Howlite with the gray veining represents the white and gray feathers on the body. Next I used two gray druzy on either side to represent the gray feathers, and then I finished it off with a Grey Saucer Natural Wood Beads just for some fun because Chickadees are not serious birds. It was a gorgeous weekend in Southcentral Alaska. Love it! The snow at our house is essentially gone. Veggie and flower seeds are started and growing well indoors. Summertime is when Alaska comes alive with color! After a long winter that's only black and white, it always amazes me how colorful our state is. The second pic is a photo that I took in my front yard. It is the inspiration for our beautiful bracelet. Lwpetersen.com has some great information about the native Alaskan Wild Iris. “The flower of the Iris Setosa is deep violet to blue 2.5-4” across. The plant grows up to 3’ tall. The Wild Iris has two sets of 3 petals. The larger outer sepals called falls are veined and often have a white and/or yellow center. The inner petals, called the standard, are narrow and upright. There are usually 3 flowers on each stalk, although it may range between 1-4 flowers.” Alaska Interpretation: The petals of the Alaska Wild Iris bracelet are represented by the most beautiful Amethyst, and the yellow center of the sepals are represented by 14K gold-filled spacers. There is one beautiful 14K gold-filled bead to represent the beauty hidden in the throat of the sepals.
