Foraging the flora in freedom. 🌱 Took Nicodemus out into the woods to forage for lingonberries. Here in the early spring in Alaska the lingonberry is the most flavorful and tart once a good portion of the snow has melted and they have frosted over once or twice. As a child, I grew up playing in the forest all throughout the day, occasionally pausing to stoop and scout for a few berries to snack on before continuing to run barefoot through the tundra on my way playing pirates or pioneers. I look on those memories with such fondness as well as pride and privilege that I was fortunate to be raised surrounded in nature and grow up with a connection to the earth with the opportunity to learn about the plants that were all around me. Flight of the Albatross.. A pair of Laysan Albatrosses were spotted off our boat almost every day, which I didn’t mind at all because I love getting to watch them soar, but they’re also a sign of good luck for sailors. This might have to do with wind, as sailors used to rely on trade winds, and that’s the cheapest mechanism (wind) for these birds to travel hundreds of miles across the ocean in a given day. The wind was a bit of a menace on our trip, but if that’s what it takes to get to see these beautiful birds, I suppose that’s alright. Breakup - The end of an Alaskan winter, when the ice that has frozen the rivers into thick sheets of ice strong enough to be used as highways, begins to unthaw and break up.
