Did you know that humpback whales can be identified and tracked by photos of their flukes? Flukes, or tails, of humpbacks are unique to each whale. Color patterns, scars, and notches help scientists identify individual whales and keep track of their movements and behaviors. But it’s not just scientists in on the fun. You can submit your own whale photos to @happywhale_official website to help you identify the whale you saw and contribute to their research! In Alaska, it’s also common to submit dorsal fin photos of killer whales, but Happy Whale follows a plethora of marine mammal species around the world! This whale was photographed aboard @kenaifjordstours and identified as Petree, a female humpback who has been observed since 2002. Check out the map of her sightings - along with other breeding humpbacks, Petree made the migration to Alaska from Hawaii this spring and will return to her winter grounds again after the summer spent eating small fish up here.
