Ternyata keharuman bunga yang baunya seperti semerbak kemuning ini tercium jauh dari rumah, kira-kira berjarak 8 rumah sudah tercium harumnya. Pohon pule pun merayakan hari Idulfitri masya Allah. Sayang keharumannya terendam hujan yang turun setiap malam selama satu minggu terakhir ini. Sekarang bunga-bunganya sudah berguguran. Selamat Idulfitri 1445 H. One delightful thing about this time of year is the huge variety of fresh new growth. This is the mystery Alstonia, and i just love those leaves (3rd pic is a new seedling). So why is it a mystery? Well as yet i’ve still not been able to track it down on line, but my thought is, it could very well be a hybrid of A. scholaris and A. yunnanensis, the former being a very common species, and the latter being the only one i can find with pink flowers! This just goes to show what can happen when two species hybridise; the fourth pic is my plant, and the last is of @young__gardener ‘s plant, and thank you for that pic Andrew. However, they both come from the same source! And all i know about that, is they’re from somewhere in Arunachal Pradesh. The sweet smell of this flower is like a parfume..The Common Pulai or Alstonia angustiloba is a mid-canopy tree that can reach up to 40 m in height. It is native to Singapore and is naturally distributed across the primary or secondary forests and swamp forests of Sumatra, Peninsular Malaysia, Borneo and Java. It has buttress roots and its deeply fluted, dark grey trunk supports a pagoda-shaped crown. The Common Pulai has simple, glossy, dark green leaves that are oval shaped, arranged in whorls. The tree exudes latex when any part of the plant is damaged. In Singapore, flowering can be triggered by distinctly cool dry weather, and the tree produces many sprays of creamy-white flowers accompanied by a heady fragrance reminiscent of burnt sugar. The Common Pulai and Indian Pulai (Alstonia scholaris) are both similar looking and commonly planted in Singapore’s urban landscapes. However, they can be differentiated by a few characteristics such as the colour of the flowers and the stipules. The Indian Pulai has greenish-yellow flowers and the Common Pulai has creamy-white flowers. The Indian Pulai has a stipule at the base of the leaf petiole while the Common Pulai does not. While I was walking down the street I noticed a very strong fragrance and I found out that it came from these tiny flowers 🤩 This is the Alstonia scholaris a species of flowering plant in the Apocynaceae family. MONDAY GREENS - This sketch was due since my visit to Delhi in late October. That's the time of the year when the Saptaparni blooms, infusing the air with its intoxicating fragrance come evening, marking the advent of winter. The golden hour paints it's magic before sun down. The change of season is palpable and the heart - it turns a little with this flurry of sensations. When I went to school back in the day, blackboards were essential to classrooms. I didn't know then 'scholars' made writing slates from it's bark. Alstonia scholaris je tropický strom s výškou ±40 m pochádzajúci z Indočíny. V angličtine nazývaný ako tabuľový strom, pretože drevo alstonie sa používalo k výrobe ceruziek a tabuliek na písanie, či k výrobe papiera. Ďalší zaužívaný názov ”diabolský strom” vychádza zase z povery, že strom ukrýva zlých duchov, pravdepodobne z dôvodu jeho jedovatosti. Napriek tomu sa v tradičnom liečiteľstve používala kôra na liečenie proti malárii, kožným ochoreniam alebo tráviacim problémom. Skúmali sa aj účinky proti rakovine, ale západná medicína založená na dôkazoch reálne nič zo stromu nevyužíva. Z poškodenej borky vyteká biela latexová miazga, typická pre túto čelaď stromov - apocynaceae, čo je ďalšia špecifická vlastnosť pre pomenovanie ako mliečny strom. Alstonia neznáša mráz, ale veľmi dobre sa regeneruje, čo sa využíva pri výsadbe na miestach s častými búrkami a cyklónami. Konáre sa môžu za silného vetra polámať, ale kmeň potom znovu obrastie. The day after the execution. Townsville City Council have wrongly cut down and killed a healthy and structurally sound, 130 year old tree because they are risk averse and ultimately stupid. Devil's Tree or Blackboard Tree / Alstonia scholaris When I first came across this tree in Bangalore - it was the smell - the strong over-powering smell of cardamom but so concentrated that the sweet smell of cardamom which I love turned to gross and nauseous. I didn't know where it came from but wherever I went I smelled it. It was awful really. Until I came across this tree in my office campus that cleared up the mystery. We've been keeping vigil with a venerable elder today - with this century old Milky Pine (Alstonia scholaris) that stands majestically in the Queens Gardens, Gurambilbarra / Townsville. This Highly Significant, veteran tree has had lots of bracing hardware installed to keep it structurally sound. It is healthy and stands in a sheltered spot. Our Council wants to cut it down because they're risk adverse. D day is looming. We've been asking for a 2nd opinion on the decision, as their assessment is skewed and they haven't explored any options such as pruning, building up the soil around it's roots, and a 2nd opinion from an impartial and highly qualified arborist. Liz Downes started this action today when she tied a yellow ribbon, with quotes and facts attached, around this old tree. Mum and I visited today and added another, and spent some time in its shade and resonance. Community are encouraged to join us, by spending time with our beautiful elder as its fate is decided by the humans in charge. A large muscular fig with unusual (to me) linear - oblong leaves. Note (7) the buttressing and aerial roots. No idea, but may be Ficus virgata, which likes open forest, reaching 30m tall, often a strangler. Or a hairy fig (F. hispida) to 13m, sandpapery leaf tops, hairy undersides, or a sandpaper fig (F. opposita). All range from here, to Papua New Guinea and Asia. Big scope, not counting the others (c.550 shared by Indonesia & Australia, of c850 species, worldwide) 8 - 10. I'm guessing is milky pine, white cheesewood or devil tree (Alstonia scholaris, Apocynaceae, Indomalesia to China, SE Asia and Australia). Milky sap as per this family. A pioneer species, tree to 40m. Leaves glossy above, whitish beneath. Timber much used, including as blackboards and slates for Burmese and Indian schoolchildren (hence, scholaris...). Aati masa - Karkidakam of Dakshina Kannada. Aati is the time when our digestive fire is at the lowest. In Tulunadu, Aati is known for the tradition of drinking paleda kashaya and menthe ganji on the day of Aati amavasya (the new moon in the month of aati). Paleda kashaya is an extremely bitter milky decoction prepared from the fresh bark of the pale mara (Alstonia scholaris tree). The bark is harvested barefoot, before sunrise, with a sharp rock and not a knife or ax. The kashaya is consumed fresh and in small quantities (20-40 ml). Due to the heating nature of the decoction, the breakfast that follows after the morning ritual is menthe ganji; porridge made from fenugreek seeds and rice, which helps with balance the heat generated through the kashaya in the body.
