That was a fun evening with Amida Watches. Reinterpretation of a 70s watch from this brand. Mechanical movement that uses a prism to project the time sideways in a digital (numbers) way. The Digitrend by @amida_watches was one of the most unique watches I saw at @windupwatchfair SF. The time discs are actually laying flat on the movement, and a prism set in the aperture on the side of the case brings them upright so you can read time while driving, hands on steering wheel. En 2024 estamos viendo el resurgimiento de aquel reloj, hoy en día aún se ven Amidas que salen de alguna subasta de New Old Stock como soldados que creen que aún continúa la guerra, de echo gracias a un lote de estas subastas fue que el diseñador Matthieu Allègre (quien ha colaborado con marcas como Louis Vuitton, Chopard, Jacob & Co y Corum) conoció a Amida y tuvo la brillante visión de resucitar aquel hito de los años 70 en el mundo moderno. Armó su equipo trayendo al ingeniero Bruno Herbet (quien trabajó con Daniel Roth y Gérald Genta) y a Clément Meynier para viajar al pasado y traer al presente al Amida Digitrend. El Amida Digitrend “Take-Off Edition” ha sido modernizado para lidiar con el mundo de hoy en día, detalles como un proceso de manufactura más refinado, una mejor hermeticidad de hasta 50 metros para el reloj y la construcción de la aerodinámica caja del reloj que ahora es de acero inoxidable 316L. El mecanismo ya no es frágil y delicado como hace 48 años, ahora tenemos un calibre automático Soprod Newton P092 de 28,800 alternancias y 44 horas de reserva de marcha. Así como una correa que combina piel de becerro y alcántara. Pero esencialmente el icónico diseño original del Amida se ha mantenido prácticamente intacto. Al voltear el reloj podemos ver que su tapa tiene orgullosamente grabado el nombre de la marca y un avión rodeando una imagen del planeta Tierra con las palabras “Take-off edition” Hay un periodo de pre-orden en línea en la página oficial de Amida el 28 de mayo del presente año con las entregas proyectadas para octubre de 2024. Parte 1 ¿Recuerdan a Amida? Probablemente no. Amida era una marca en los años 70s que entró a la moda de los relojes digitales con su famoso Digitrend y su existencia no es del todo conocida, por lo menos de este lado del mundo. Aunque su inusual y futurista diseño tuvo un profundo efecto en un tal Maximilian Büsser, creador de MB&F quien siempre atribuye que la inspiración para el diseño del Horological Machine 5 viene directamente de aquel Amida que vio en la década de los 70. Para entender el Digitrend hay que saber un poco el mundo en el que nació, 1976, ABBA estaba de moda, las computadoras eran algo que comenzaba a ser una realidad, los aviones estaban en una constante evolución y los autos de carreras se volvían cada vez más rápidos experimentando con nuevos materiales. �Algo más sucedía en el mundo de la relojería (que pronto pondría a la industria de rodillas) y este era el surgimiento del cuarzo y el LED, nacieron los primeros relojes digitales con cristal líquido y display de focos LED los cuales fueron muy famosos. En 1976 surgió Amida y le mostraron al mundo su fabuloso Digitrend, un reloj digital mecánico que no dependía de electrónica para mostrar la hora, sino de dos discos con horas y minutos y un ingenioso prisma de vidrio que reflejaba la hora de manera vertical, esto era necesario debido al futurista diseño “streamliner” del reloj que provocaba que sea legible únicamente de lado. Desgraciadamente para los Amida, sus 2 opciones de mecanismo (1 joya y 17 joyas) no eran exactamente…robustos.�Era muy fácil dañarlos, aunque había mecanismos 17J de MBWC (Michael Berger Watch Company) que eran perfectamente compatibles y esto permitió que aquellos relojes que aún existían pudiesen seguir marcando la hora por muchos años más. Pero a pesar de haber sido innovadores con su diseño y display, esto no fue suficiente y Amida quebró en 1979. I wanted to compare the new PCH Driver from California Watch to its vintage counterpart, the Amida Digitrend from 1976. The old variant was made of chromium plated base metal, the new one is made of solid stainless steel and also available in with a black PVD coating. Insight of the Digitrend is a cheap 1 jewel manual calibre which has a direct readout and a prism that shows the time on front. The PCH Driver has a Quartz Analogue Movement which mimics the jump of the hour disc and also uses a prism. Here the time is adjusted by the two little pushers on the side, the “crown” is a pusher for an additional LED-Backlight. Dimensions also changed, length and width only increased by 4 to 8%, but the height increased by nearly 29% to a towering 18 mm.
