Happy Mother’s Day! This is my take on a deer hair hummingbird. Gotta shout out @sgt.bassfisher for the inspiration. Little backstory: My wife and I both lost our moms at a young age, my wife was 21 and I was 16. It’s a strange thing to have in common, but it is a unique experience that we both can relate to and understand each other on a deeper level. Both of our moms loved hummingbirds. Whenever we see a hummingbird, we take some comfort in the idea that our moms are still making their presence known. Whether or not you believe in “signs” or anything in that realm, the memory and sense of comfort provided by these sightings is very real. In the hours (lots of hours) I spent tying this, I felt that comfort and warmth as well. I’m happy with how this turned out, but even if it was a complete disaster, I would be grateful to have found the space to reflect on the memories of my mother, my mother in law, and my wife who has gracefully navigated her first 12.5 months of motherhood. Most of the time, I repress my grief, I compartmentalize it because it’s simply too immense. It’s a shapeless, intangible ache that seems to have no end to its depth. But in this process, I was able to sit with it. I found a way to give it a shape, and I was able to tether myself to my art, as to not get swallowed by the depth. This is a Mother’s Day gift for my wife, but it’s also an homage to our moms, and a gift for them as well. I’m not an openly emotional person, especially with strangers on the internet, but I do feel that its important to share my experience of loss, and talk about it in a way that is approachable and relatable. Every day without a mom is hard, but on days like these, there’s a bitter reminder that some people get more time than others. That reminder can hurt, but it can help underscore that time is precious, death indiscriminate, and love is indispensable. If you are lucky enough to be able to, tell your mother and the moms in your life you love them today (and every other day idiot). If you’re going through a hard time, shoot me a message. I’m always willing to talk, listen, and be a resource for anybody who needs a friend.

This is a Hex Flymph tied on a size 8 Mustad salmon hook. For Hexagenia in Michigan you could easily go to a size 6 as well. I spun Cream rabbit dubbing in 6/0 camel colored UNI thread on a Clark Block. Rib is Ovale Silk gold. Tail is Pheasant. Over the back I wanted to mimic the brown markings, so I continued with Pheasant fibers over the top of the body. I tied this Killer Bugger recently with the idea of fishing some warm water. Well, yesterday I got out and put it to the test 🤘 I had a hard time keeping the crappie off of it at one point, and also caught spotted bass, bluegill, and green sunfish! 4 species day on a fly I hadn't fished before?
