This huge naturally occurring sandstone rock is the 'Andle Stone'. It stands alone,high on the edge of Stanton Moor,here in my home county of Derbyshire,overlooking the Peak District village of Birchover. The Andle Stone is one of many such vast stones which dot our landscape,not only notable for their aloneness and their size,but also for their connection to our ancestors. The flat-ish top has carvings cut into its surface. Small circular hollows known as cups and several series' of concentric circles...rings inside eachother,all with the same central point. These 'Cup and Ring' marks date back as far as the early Neolithic age,which began around twelve thousand years ago! Apparently examples of them can be found in many parts of the world. I've never climbed to the top of this stone via the hand and foot holds carved,in the nineteenth century,into it's side,along with metal fixings ,as the lowest 'step' sits about level with my chin. I'm happy and content to stand and touch this ancient soul,this living vessel of ancestral energy. It feels beautiful,gentle,peaceful,definitely a friend and Kindred spirit. So what was the significance of 'Cup and Ring' markings?....nobody,not even the most eminent of archaeologists,has ever been absolutely sure. Are they simply artwork?,messages?,boundary markers? Or,since they're usually carved into horizontal surfaces facing the sky,are they perhaps astrological? Also,and to me most significantly,the carvings most often appear on 'lone' large rocks which are also near to what are known to be ancient sacred sites. The 'Andle Stone' does and I'll write about the site in my next post.
