Some of my recent vintage/antique religious finds, including an antique brass and ebony nun’s crucifix, an ebony and silver nun’s crucifix, a mid-century style crucifix and the largest free-standing celluloid-on-tin Jesus print that I have ever seen. Both of the nun’s crucifixes feature skull and cross bones. Macabre. The first of four photos – It doesn't look so great against blue, but I got lucky and got a rather rare 18th century brass or bronze French crucifix. It's not like the typical type one finds with either three cornered or round feet, but the underside of the shaft is peened in the same way as candlesticks were made in the early 18th century. Religious pieces can be really difficult to date because the styles persisted for a long time with little change and also wealthy churchgoers would often commission a replica of a piece that was starting to wear out or was damaged. . . . One of the things that makes this unusual is that it is in such darn good condition for dating 1770 to 1780. It's also considerably larger than normal and it has good details still, instead of usually being highly rubbed or fairly smooth after years of touch. The incised decorations at the base are typical of late Louis XVI examples through the early Empire Period which is why it is dated circa 1770 to 1780. The condition is really outstanding, with no repairs and surface is far less worn than is usually the case. The corpus is held to the cross in four places. I have collected and been very interested in religious artifacts since I first started collecting in about 1970. I just think this is a very fine example at about 17 inches tall of a nice early crucifix in great condition and in a form and shape that is not a common form and shape for the usual French crucifixes one finds or sees from the 17th and 18th century. I wish I could keep this, but I think I have a private buyer who will pay a good price for it which will help me more than holding onto it myself at this point in time anyway.
