Photos of the last people on the Moon (from photographer Andy Saunders' book Apollo Remastered). 50 years ago, Apollo 17 sent the sixth expedition to the Moon - Gene Cernan, Harrison Schmitt and Ron Evans. Since then, people have not been beyond low Earth orbit. Cernan and Schmitt spent three days on the Moon, drove a record 35.7 km on the rover, and brought back a record number of lunar rocks. The first photo shows Cernan inside the lunar module after a full day on the surface. Before the lunar module took off from the surface of the Moon, Cernan spoke on the radio with mission control on Earth - that very soon people would return here. Would you believe this race car lead to LunarVette? Jim Rathmann was a race driver in the 1950's. Rathmann won the Indy 500 in 1960. When he retired from racing he moved to Florida and started a Chevrolet dealership. Then NASA started developing their new rocket launch facility while preparing for the moonshot. Rathmann approached Chevrolet regarding a special "lease" program for astronauts through his dealership.
