On Thursday I married these two good eggs and it was pretty great. It was a bit chaotic with the rain so I didn’t get a happy snap but luckily @rachaelv.photography had my back and got this proper shot of Jaime, Dan and I. . I can’t even with Jaime’s dress. We have the honor of witnessing the details of many a wedding emerge - it’s beautiful how each one is unique and authentic to the engaged couple and their loved ones. . For the ceremony site at this wedding, the Father of the Bride grew Lunaria on his farm aka the silver dollar plant also commonly referred to as “Honesty” - a lovely and strong symbol for a union. . "Do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life"🌿 🌿As a child I always knew I wanted to work in something creative. At the time, I had no idea that it would be working with flowers! After secondary school in Ireland, I trained in Fashion Design in New York city and from there began working in theatre in the US, designing both costumes and sets for regional theatres around the Washington DC area. One thing led to another and I applied for a job with an event design company who also happened to be a florist! That was over 20 years ago and so the rest is obviously history. 🌿I learned so much on that job and in the years since about the processes and mechanics involved in floral design but it was only when we moved back to Ireland in 2015 that I really began to narrow in on what has now become my signature style. 🌿For my birthday that year, a close friend gave me this glorious book by Vic Brotherson @scarletandviolet and it changed everything. I was immediately drawn to this abundant, nostalgic style, unlike the traditional, formal style of floristry I had experienced to that point. We had a small bit of land with our new house in Ireland so I immediately set to planting flowerbeds in order to get my hands on some of those delicate, ethereal blooms I first saw in Vic's book. 🌿Lots of hard graft, 8 years and a pandemic later, Fernwood Flowers is now a thriving business and we have flowered hundreds of weddings all across Ireland. I am truly grateful to that friend for setting me on my own flowery path. I love feeling the change in seasons, and the change from Summer to Autumn is incredible. As the temperature drops we see deciduous trees change colour, new summer growth hardens, and different flowers come into bloom. During my first Autumn designing flowers as Handpicked, I worked with Kara and Ben where in taking inspiration from the beautiful environment of @mountmacedonwinery , their florals focused in hues of orange, yellow, burgundy and silvery eucalyptus. 4 years ago today I was a guest (and florist) at my beautiful niece and nephews wedding @restaurantmerne when the state government announced that we would be going into lockdown the next day, that only "essential workers" would be able to go to work. We had no idea of what that meant for our livelihoods and didn't know when we would be able to celebrate anything together again, so needless to say, we drank and danced and laughed like it was the last time we ever would! It was a fabulous wedding celebrating togetherness and connectivity that would serve to buoy us through the weeks and months ahead of the COVID rollercoaster while the world ground to a halt.
