Dutch inspired Every year since COVID at about this time I’ve created my very own Dutch inspired bowl of Tulips, but grown here at Churchmead or with local flower farmers. This year all the flowers are from The garden with a warm sprinkling of colour of yellows and oranges. Instead of Gouda I used a Somerset cheese from the market with some grapes and a peeled orange. My close companion with a long nose called Mabel seemed to be more interested in the orange than my flowers, but was restrained and stole nothing. You can catch a pic of her on stories. Visiting Amsterdam and The Hague to see the Tulips and paintings a few years ago now, has always inspire me to create my own abundant bowl of colour. The flowers are arranged in one of my own favourite pots from potting days with a tulip inspired form and jazz decoration. These past few years I have worked hard at my photography; to try and capture a feeling of past Masters, to celebrate the joy of Spring Tulips and flowers. ✨HAPPY PLACE✨ Yes yes yes! Me in my happy place! If we chat regularly you’re probably sick of hearing how much I love spending time in the garden (as opposed to doing all that pesky admin I also have to do). But look at that view! It’s the best workplace come rain and shine - no matter the weather I get joy from this space, some new treasure every day. I am so content when I’m outside with my hands in the soil, weeding, planting out, picking (for the first hour 😂) and just getting garden jobs done. It’s the best feeling to spend a whole day out there ticking jobs off the list, feeling present and productive. I realise that says a lot about me and what makes me happy 😆 It is a constant juggle between all the things that need doing and I’d like more time outside without distraction. But there are many facets to this flower farming floristry business and growing is just one of them. Yesterday it was the flowers, styling and photography workshop which I held here with my friend Ale of @bohemia_photos. Guests spent the morning arranging flowers with me, then styling fruit and flowers to make a flat lay in a box with Ale. After lunch she spent time with everyone teaching them to style their arrangements to achieve the Dutch masters look she is so known for. There was much talk about cameras, lenses, apps and tripods! Such a happy day that I will remember for a long time. Annabel demonstrated how to create a masterpiece with British flowers and I showed how to style it with fruits the use of backdrops and how to create the contrast with the light and colour to achieve the chiaroscuro effect. I must confess I was a little bit scared at the beginning but after 2 hours I finally managed to relax and enjoy our day . Come and join me, Rachel, on a behind the scenes 1.5hr tour of our flower farm near Tetbury, here in the South Cotswolds, next Monday, Bank Holiday 6th May. After a welcome introduction in the studio, we will tour the farm including our polytunnel where we bring on over 5,000 seedlings 🌱 as well as store our potted up dahlia tubers which will be in full cutting production. We will chat about propagation, compost, trays, succession planning and what seeds we’ve sown so far in 2024. We will check in on the Little Garden - a micro ‘no dig’ cutting garden for the cut flower enthusiast and then we will head out to the flower fields to see how we are prepping up for all the planting out and building our new dahlia plot and check on some new and recently planted perennials as well as seeing the tulips and last of the narcissi. Finally we will talk about compost, prepping beds, dig vs no dig, planting spacing and varieties we grow. Please note - this is a pre-season tour so only a very limited part of the flower field will be in bloom. This is very much aimed at those with an interest in growing their own cut flowers in 2024 to learn about the prep stage and see first hand how we approach the season ahead. 🌷Choose from 9am, 11am or 2pm 🌷Each tour lasts 1.5hrs and is limited in numbers so that everyone gets to ask questions and see everything. 🌷Tickets are £25 per head and must be booked in advance on our website. 💐Gift vouchers make the most brilliant presents too and can be redeemed against any Farm Tour.
