A book I just finished: The Vanishing Girls by Callie Browning A serial killer thriller set in 1985 Barbados, with a heavy dose of romance in the morgue. Vanishing Girls introduces us to Eileen with a mysterious past who answers a newspaper classified ad looking for an assistant at a local morgue. There she meets Holden, the handsome man who inherited the morgue from his dad. He's struggling to keep the business afloat, and desperate to maintain the morgue in his dad's memory. Quickly the pair are thrown together in a bid to find the killer of several young women whose mutilated bodies have been found dumped in cane fields. I had a couple issues with this book but overall it was a pretty good reading experience. The plot and characters could have been given more room to develop. What I did like: - The Clifford character - The historical references and glimpses into 1985 Barbados - Got some insight into how deaths and funeral business work - The book depicted Barbados in a pretty dark and murky way that contradicts the sunny island vibes: lots of midnight settings, the dark, muddy canefields, the seedy side of town, the economic struggles of 1985. What didn't work for me: - The ending and the killer reveal. Too rushed and made little to no sense. - The romance sublot. Too rushed and made little to no sense. - There were inconsistencies in the character development. Eileen starts out as a plucky go-getter, and then by the end of the book she's the damsel in distress. - Again, I think the main plot needed more time to be developed. The timeline skips were jarring at times and made the plot progression clunky. SPOILER HERE . . . . . . . . . . . . . Did the killer really have to be the guy in drag??? The reveal of the killer felt really lazy and almost an after thought. It made zero sense. I think it would have worked better if the killer was revealed to be someone we as the readers actually grew to know. Not a character who "died" like 30% into the book. . . . . . . Would I recommend The Vanishing Girls? Definitely. It's a good book club pick. I'm interested in what else Browning has to offer us. I think it's a pretty good book for a self-published work.
