🏥🚧 Nothing symbolises a building’s progress more than a topping out celebration. To mark the occasion, the project team involved in raising the roof on the $122.7 million Secure Mental Health Rehabilitation Unit (SMHRU) was treated to a special worker’s breakfast. Project Manager Brad Azzopardi said the completion of this structural phase for the project was a testament to the collaborative efforts of the project team, builder BESIX Watpac and stakeholders who are bringing the building to life. “I’ve been on this project for three years and putting the final sheets of the roof on is a massive milestone,” Brad said. “Hosting a barbecue served as a wonderful opportunity to express our appreciation to everyone who has contributed to making it happen. “The ‘topping out’ of the facility recognises the building has reached its highest point, we are now part way to completion with attention now shifting to fitting out its interior.” Scheduled to be fully operational by early 2025, construction for the SMHRU located on the Gold Coast University Hospital (GCUH) campus remains on track to be finished by the end of 2024. #MentalHealthCare #CommunityFocus #HopeAndHealing #GoldCoastHealth #BehindTheBuild #SecureMentalHealth #QueenslandHealth #LivedExperience #AlwaysCare #Empathy #PublicHealth #SMHRU #MentalHealth #HealthInfrastructure

Spencer Block is a redevelopment of roughly 1.5 acres into one of Victoria's biggest rental buildings. A short stroll from the waterfront and several facilities, Spencer Block is situated north of Victoria's downtown area and next to one of the country's oldest Chinatowns. At the base is 19,000 square feet of retail space, it will encircle three significant streets, serving both this neighborhood's transformation and the market-rate rental apartments above. 🏥 When the Secure Mental Health Rehabilitation Unit (SMHRU) opens to patients early in 2025, it will be the first-of-its kind mental health facility within the public system on the Gold Coast. 🌱 Clinical Director of Mental Health and Specialist Services (MHSS) at Gold Coast Health Dr Sandeep Chand says the aim is to offer a safe space for individuals living with mental illness to rest, recover, and rehabilitate over an extended period, longer than a typical hospital stay. 👥 “We’ve worked closely with our lived experience team to create a therapeutic environment that feels like home,” Dr Chand says. “These rooms are purposefully designed to keep consumers experiencing mental illness safe while helping patients achieve self-sustaining outcomes. “By fostering an environment that enhances life skills, we’re equipping our patients with tools to build resilience for when they return to their everyday lives.” The $122.7 million 40-bed facility is designed for patients with severe and complex mental health disorders. "It serves as a reminder to people facing challenging times that they’re not alone – there are people here who genuinely care. For the people who will visit the new facility, my message is simple: I care, we care, and you are not alone.” Titta, who brings valuable insights from her lived experience, has played a crucial role in ensuring the facility is designed with the future consumers’ needs in mind. “The SMHRU will provide a space where people can grow and have an opportunity to live a meaningful life,” Titta explains, "after all, we all deserve the right to be happy and live a meaningful life.” Scheduled to be fully operational by early 2025, construction for the SMHRU remains on track to be finished by the end of 2024.
