The record was produced by John Cale, formerly of the Velvet Underground, as Smith liked the rawness of his solo albums. Horses is generally considered to be one of the first records in the genre of punk. As such, the level of its impact is immeasurable, with various punk, new wave, alternative rock, indie rock, and grunge artists citing it as a major influence. Prior to 1975, Smith and her band had been establishing themselves as a major act in the underground music scene of New York City.
