Congratulations to Mercy McAuley junior Ali Lewis, who last night received the Youth of the Year Award from the Exchange Club of Northwest Cincinnati! This is the 2nd year in a row that the winner was a Mercy McAuley student! The Northwest Exchange Club’s Youth of the Month program recognizes the area’s most outstanding high school juniors. Monthly winners are selected throughout the school year by an interview team from the Northwest Exchange Club. The selection is based on academics, leadership, school activities and community service. At the conclusion of the school year, all the monthly winners return for the Youth of the Year Banquet, which was held last night. At the banquet, each student presented an essay on the topic “How has the increasing emphasis on diversity and inclusion impacted American youth?” Additional criteria include school activities, grades and community involvement. At the conclusion of the banquet, a Youth of the Year was selected - and this year, the award went to Ali Lewis! As the 2024 Youth of the Year winner, Ali was presented with a personalized plaque and a $1,000 cash prize. She will also have an opportunity to compete as a senior for additional scholarship awards at the district, state and national levels. Join us in congratulating Ali on this tremendous achievement! An attentive silence is neither pushing for more nor uncomfortable with the quiet. There is a resting in openness and acceptance of the silence that allows the next layer to unfold. Often this means letting go of random bits of free association that arise as you attend to another. You realize that sharing the "me too" or the "that reminds me of" story doesn't particularly help you access depth. You recognize that depth requires time for self-connection in the other and your silent attentiveness supports this. When the desire to connect and be known is present, self-connection and gentle curiosity are flowing back and forth between you and the other person. In this back and forth, you are conscious of where the aliveness is and you let this be your guide to expressing curiosity of the other's experience or sharing your own experience of the moment. In this attunement to aliveness, neither of you push conversation in a particular direction nor rush to share it "all" at once. In your sharing you remain experientially self connected and make space for the effect of your sharing on the other person by sharing a little at a time and then hearing from them. In their sharing, you get curious about how the experience lives for them. This means questions about their experience of something rather focus on the information or content of what they are saying. Focus on the present moment experience doesn't mean you don't bring up events of the past or musings about the future. You are always and only ever can have experience in the present moment. It is only a trick of thinking and language that has you imagine you are living in the past or future. Whatever the topic of conversation, you can direct your attention to body sensations, impulses, desires, feelings, needs, energy, excetera, in the present moment. This primary focus on experience in the present invites unconscious layers of experience to become conscious moving gradually to the most core aspect of a constellation of related experiences. It is the sharing, and often the universality, of this core aspect of experience that gives a sense of depth in conversation. #beknown #vulnerability #connection

“I have absolutely loved my time at George Fox. Social Studies Teacher Mrs. Lisa Heiert, along with two of our students, Lauren Birkle and Anna Heitz, attended the Spirit of America Youth Leadership program at Valley Forge in Pennsylvania. Thousands of students from across the country attend the four-day immersive programs for fun, engaging activities, including a mock congressional debate, a free enterprise shark tank challenge, and a variety of leadership workshops. They also toured Valley Forge, Independence Hall, and got a close look at the Liberty Bell. They even met students from one of our @mercyeducationsystem sister schools, @merionmercy! I mean, I really struggled! 🫣 Like a doctor who knows how to treat a patient, but won’t listen to his own advice! 😑 But deep down, I knew that I have a proven track record working with physicians and no one knows this area better than I do! Mikayla Hintz is a senior at UM, graduating with a Master of Science in Leadership and Communication and a Bachelor of Science in Management. Mikayla is from Baltimore, Ohio. After graduation, she plans to continue working as the office manager of Mid-Towne Works while searching for opportunities to work with veterans like herself. She hopes to begin a career that affords her the chance to work alongside the military and to be able to occasionally travel for work. When asked what she liked about being a Grace Pilot School of Business student, Mikayla said, "By far, the best part of being a student in the Grace Pilot School of Business is the professors and staff. I can't express the hours I have spent sitting in JB, Dr. Nuriyeva, and Professor Brown's offices, catching up on life and having amazing conversations. Not to mention, there was never a dull moment with Mr. Cillo around! I wouldn't trade these people or this experience for the world." Thank you for being a part of the UM family!
