Artists over the centuries have use the weather and weather events as the subject for their paintings. They have painted winter scenes, summer scenes, spring scenes, and fall scenes. Considering the very wet and stormy weather that has been affecting the middle, southern, and eastern part of the United States lately, in particular huge amounts of rain and severe storms, I found some paintings by famous artists which convey very wet weather conditions. The artists are from the 19th and 20th century. Caillebotte, Malobabic, Magritte, Beraud, Hassam, Van Gogh, Falter, Blanchard, Cortes and Degas. “I was in Washington in the conservation lab at the National Gallery,” said artist Wayne Thiebaud in 2019, “and they asked me if I had any tools that I used while painting. I asked for an example, and they brought out a strip from a Venetian blind that was covered with paint marks and told me that Dick Diebenkorn used it to paint with. Willard Leroy Metcalf, Early Spring Afternoon - Central Park, 1911. Oil on canvas, 91.3 × 91.3 cm. Brooklyn Museum, New York, United States of America. After studying at the Boston Museum school, American artist Willard Leroy Metcalf left for Paris in 1883 to attend the Académie Julian. During his free time, he travelled widely throughout France creating scenes of peasant life. These ultimately influenced his turn to landscape painting. In 1886, he was the first American to visit Giverny, where the French Impressionist master Claude Monet lived and worked. Soon many of his countrymen flocked there, forming an American artist's colony. In April 1911, Metcalf painted Early Spring Afternoon - Central Park from his apartment on Manhattan's West Side. The view from his window gave him a high vantage point by which he created this panoramic scene. The artist captures a light-filled spring day in New York by using a pastel colour palette and soft brushwork. He presents a clear blue sky and trees just beginning to blossom. Why I love NYC: Yesterday on impulse with time to kill, I ambled into the Quad to see “Jamie Wyeth and the Unflinching Eye”. The first shot of Jamie, son of painter Andrew Wyeth and grandson of illustrator N.C. Wyeth, he is painting and encrusted with paint: on his clothes, under his fingernails, top of his lips. Irving Wolfson, Ready For a Swim, c.1930, etching edition of 99 Irving Isaac Wolfson (1898-1981) was born in New York City to professional photographers. As a youngster, he displayed exceptional artistic ability. He wor scholarships to three of New York’s finest art schools, the National Academy of Fine Arts, Cooper Union, and the @asinyc. His teacher and mentor, John Sloan, had a significant influence over Wolfson’s work. Slone encouraged Wolfson to adopt everyday scenes as his primary subject matter. He studied printmaking with well-known artist Joseph Pennell. In 1942, Wolfson enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Montgomery, Alabama. Before coming to Montgomery, he was considered one of the top four etchers in the country. On June 20, 1946, he married a Montgomery native, Miriam Chester Williamson. The couple remained in Montgomery, where he became well-known as a local portrait painter. Wolfson was commissioned to paint a portrait of former Alabama First Lady Aurora Elmore Goode. He is also known for his painting of the inauguration of Alabama Governor Gordon Persons. Close up photos of "The Night the TV Broke at Plums Bar", a painted woodcarving made in 1985. At the time I was doing a series of bar pictures, and Plums was a beautiful space with a busy clientele. I tried to google it but could find nothing on the internet so Plums must have closed years and years ago. My bar pictures are similar to my diner ones in that they show people coming together in their busy day to rest and be served. In this case people might have come to the bar to have a drink and watch a sporting game on the TV but suddenly it broke and all there was was static on the screen. So naturally there was disappointment in the room. The guy asleep on his feet underneath the payphone says it's close to closing time. This piece was made in the days when people could still smoke indoors in public spaces. I'm sure glad that time has passed. This work was sold on 24th December 1928 by the then recently established Redfern Gallery, then of, 27 Old Bond Street, London W1. The first buyer appears to be a Mr William Keay. The original Redfern Gallery label is attached to a decades old frame which appears to be similar to the framing style popular in the 1920s, this frame made perhaps in the 1960s. £750 inc. O. Louis Guglielmi (1906-1956), The River, 1942, oil painting at the @artinstitutechi Guglielmi is a fascinating figure, born in Egypt and raised in Italy as a young child, and then migrating to the US when he was eight. He introduced elements of surrealism into many of his works that had a realist foundation, perhaps one of the first magical realists. Guglielmi is one of those great American artists who has been relegated by art historians to right outside the top tier of artists and unfortunately museums usually promote only their biggest draws and so it's relatively rare to see works by him on display. I was lucky that this painting was on display at the Art Institute, a great chance to see a stunning painting on the walls. The label on the painting noted the presence of only women in the painting, along with a child, a reflection of the War years where men were fighting overseas and women occupied spaces and positions typically controlled by men.
