Looking for Black Orpheus (René Letzgus and Bernard Tournois, 2005) One of those rare making-of features that prove to outshine the original film it seeks to examine in depth. This charming examination of 50’s classic Black Orpheus (A film which I find myself more critical of upon a rewatch), examines the European produced film through the lens of the vibrant Brazilian culture it sought to depict. It isn’t much a traditional examination of how Black Orpheus was made per se, rather it uses the film as a jumping off point to exam the interconnections between Brazil’s music, socio-political climate, and history, in a way that actually feels far more sensitive to such a vital aspect of the country’s make-up than Black Orpheus itself.
