Synopsis: À Rome, à la fin des années 1980, Salvatore, cinéaste en vogue, vient d’apprendre la mort de son vieil ami Alfredo. Avec le souvenir d’Alfredo, c’est toute son enfance qui remonte à la surface : son village natal, en Sicile, quand on l’appelait Toto et qu’il partageait son temps libre entre l’église et la salle de cinéma paroissiale, où régnait Alfredo, le projectionniste qui, au travers des films qu’il projetait, lui apprenait la vie. . Mon avis: Je ne sais pas comment j’ai pu passer à côté de ce film toute ma vie… c’est tout simplement l’un des plus beaux films qu’il m’ait été donné de voir ! Cinema Paradiso est un sublime hommage au 7ème Art et à la passion que ressent tout cinéphile pour lui. Le film de Giuseppe Tornatore déborde en outre d’humanité, un cocktail délicieux de rire, de nostalgie, de drame et d’authenticité, dans un dosage équilibré et parfait. Tornatore a tourné dans son village d’origine, en Sicile, sans forcer le trait ni son talent, il a su en retranscrire tous les côtés attachants mais aussi le cruel manque d’horizon et d’avenir si l’on ne sait pas en sortir pour aller découvrir le monde. A l’époque de l’après-guerre, le cinéma a été cette petite fenêtre pour regarder plus loin que le village d’à côté, avant que la télévision ne prenne le relais de cette fonction. Le cinéaste lie ainsi la nostalgie du cinéma qu’il pense être en voie de disparition (les salles fermaient les unes derrière les autres en Italie à cause de la démocratisation de la télévision et de l’essor de la VHS) aux sacrifices que celui-ci peut amener, à la nostalgie des villages italiens d’antan et à l’amour absolu souvent magnifié par les films. Les acteurs sont également les grands artisans de cette réussite, particulièrement les protagonistes d’un face-à-face improbable. (…)

This week was a tough one to nail down, there was some good and a lot of great. But the one that has me consistently thinking about it is “Fallout”. We have finally arrived at the somehow difficult to arrive too golden era of video game adaptations. A lot of comparisons have been made to “The Last of Us” and whilst I think that’s fair they are completely different, “The Last of Us” is a direct adaptation, whereas “Fallout” turns the franchise into a trans-media one. This is very much a new chapter in the story, but just like all of the previous games works as a great jumping on point for new fans. Within its opening minutes you’ll get a feel for its energy, which is strong tonal shifts that both disturb and delight. For new and old fans there’s a lot of revelations and twists to keep the story moving, and every character no matter how long they’re on screen for are layered and interesting. One great example is Matt Berry, who only appears physically on screen for about two minutes and will probably never appear again but in that time he gives us such a deep insight into him as a person and how he views the crazy world he lives in. I would easily describe this as come for the action, stay for the story, for the characters, and the unique world building that all helps to make this show something special. Available now on Prime. High & Low - John Galliano (Kevin MacDonald, 2023) Quite an intimate insight into one of modern fashion’s most equally celebrated and controversial figures. Kevin MacDonald’s chronicle of the rise and fall of John Galliano charts an explosive life that spans 80s New Romanticism to the Kate Moss heroin chic era of the early 00’s. I must confess to feeling the film meanders somewhat when focusing on its subject’s spectacular fall from grace by way of Galliano’s antisemitic remarks, but I also have to credit it for really digging into the actual art behind the artist with an insightful perspective. It certainly does justice to Galliano’s reputation, whether or it not comes to grips with his controversies is another matter entirely. But I’d say MacDonald has knocked it out of the park in painting a portrait of one of the most important artists of the 21st century and the fashion landscape he redefined. 2009 Si parte con un film non fresco di sala, ma che non può essere neanche definito d'annata: Bastardi senza gloria - #ingloriousbasterds Film di Quentin Tarantino, un cast molto vendibile. Riconoscimento più importante il premio oscar a Christoph Walts per il suo personaggio di generale nazista, che per ruolo/temperamento/azioni era il personaggio su cui più facilmente si poteva ottenere il miglior risultato. Storia scorrevole, veloce e con il solito twist tarantiniano. Senza spoiler, narrazione di vicende nella Francia della seconda guerra mondiale, con un finale alternativo rispetto a quello che la storia ci ha insegnato. Personaggi peculiari ma affidati a tutti attori che sanno il fatto loro, ma un Brad Pitt che non fa la differenza. . Destroyer - Réalisé par Karyn Kusama (2018) . Synopsis: La détective du LAPD Erin Bell a jadis infiltré un gang du désert californien, ce qui a eu de conséquences dramatiques. Lorsque le chef de la bande réapparaît, elle doit fouiller dans le passé pour se défaire de ses démons. . Mon avis: Je suis allé voir ce film sans grandes attentes pour être honnête et j’ai fini agréablement surpris ! C’est un thriller âpre, glauque, parfois même gore qui nous sera livré, terriblement violent et pourtant d’un réalisme saisissant, d’une force inouïe, il vous prendra aux tripes, vous marquant au fer rouge. La lumineuse Los Angeles est paradoxalement depuis toujours une capitale du film noir, de Chinatown au Heat de Michael Mann, sous le soleil de la cité des anges semble se cacher toutes les turpitudes de l’âme humaine. Le film de Karyn Kusama se conforme à l’esthétique du genre, la directrice de la photographie Julie Kirkwood baigne le film dans une aura néo-noir et plonge ses personnages dans les banlieues arides du grand Los Angeles, avec ses clôtures grillacées, ses chiens aboyants désespérément et ses détritus s’amassant entre les autoroutes qui irriguent la mégapole californienne. On y fait la connaissance d’Erin Bell, vétéran du LAPD, alors qu’elle se réveille dans sa voiture avec ce qui semble être une gigantesque gueule de bois. Elle en émerge pour se rendre sur les lieux d’un crime, un talus où gît, face contre terre, un cadavre tatoué. Bien qu’elle annonce aux détectives déjà sur place qu’elle connaît la victime et savoir qui pourrait l’avoir tué, ceux-ci ne semble pas faire cas de son opinion. Elle regagne son commissariat, où elle n’est guère plus populaire, un pli l’y attend contenant un billet de banque marqué de peinture violette. Ces événements vont la mettre sur la trace de Silas, un criminel qui lui a échappé voilà plus de 17 ans, lors une mission d’infiltration de son gang menée avec un agent du FBI Chris. Destroyer navigue alors entre la traque rédemptrice de Bell et une série de flashbacks qui dévoilent les secrets du passé et éclairent le mystère de son présent. (…)

This enchanting work about a German woman who travels to Jordan to uncover the disappearance of her partner, makes for an elegiac and dreamy work about long-distance loss.
