Eclipse Day, Day 11, Part 3 April 8 I have visited 28 National Parks. It was tempting to try to stop at Hot Springs, just an hour away. I steered that direction, the opposite of where we needed to travel, but justifying that hitting the freeway sooner would help us make better progress. However, as we kept traversing these backroads, I realized we needed to move on, we bypassed it, and joined I-40 just southeast of Russellville, Arkansas. The Oklahoma border slowed us down by an hour. When I had originally booked Amarillo, I didn’t account for extra travel, meaning the distance to Amarillo was much longer than 5 hours. Eclipse Day, Day 11, part 1 April 8 April 8 We left at 6:00 am, and lucky for us, they were setting out breakfast. We took some to go. Fort Worth was quite overcast so we decided to travel northeast into Arkansas. I looked for small towns close to the line of centrality knowing there would be less crowds. (I guess this officially makes me an umbraphile). We had originally planned on Fort Worth, because it’s smaller than Dallas, frequently has clear skies, it would be the closest point to coming back home to Utah, and the next one is in 20 years when our youngest boys would be grown and gone. I know Robert had his doubts. He had only been with us for the annular eclipse. We were prepared to hang around and chill in the area at least until it was completely done, but since I had only asked for 2 days off, we also knew we would be rushed to get home. I planned an overnight stop in Amarillo knowing we would likely reach it, even with traffic, and giving us a small head start. I remember a partial eclipse while I was growing up, but I never had an opportunity to see a full one until I saw the 2017 eclipse in Idaho, and it was fantastic, even as short as it was. It’s just so amazing that until you have less than 10% of sunlight, you can’t really tell that anything happening because the sun is just so powerful. It awes me how much we depend on the sun for light and warmth, and take it for granted. Anyhow, after we traveled past Dallas, closer to the Arkansas border, we stopped for gas and snacks for the day. We knew we had several hours to drive to clear weather, so it made me nervous as I saw our window of leeway diminish. I actually had picked a much smaller town named Pencil Bluff, but as we arrived in Mena for a bathroom stop, we chatted with a few super friendly locals at the gas station. My husband laughed at the merch and would later buy some.
