EBSB students marching at the annual Children's Civil Rights March in Birmingham, Alabama. The original Children's March happened 61 years ago. Over 1000 brave children risked not only school consequences, but police aggression and jail time, to stand up for Civil Rights. During day two of our Alabama Learning Lab with @empowerinitiative we visited sites in Birmingham and Selma, including @sixteenstreetbaptist @bhamcivilrights and the Pettus Bridge. Some questions we were invited to consider today: When looking at modern-day examples of the “Foot Soldiers of Birmingham,” am I supportive of them or indifferent? As secretary of the Montgomery chapter of the NAACP, Rosa Parks was the lead activist and investigator of the Recy Taylor rape case which sparked her work as an anti-rape activist for other women. She went on to join the League of Women Voters and was registered to vote in 1945 despite Jim Crow laws at the time. In 1955, Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery leading to the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Virginia Foster Durr was one of the founding members of the Southern Conference for Human Welfare (SCHW). She worked alongside First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt to lobby for poll taxes to be abolished. Durr later worked with Montgomery’s only interracial organization, Council of Human Relations, and supported organizations like SNCC. She was also a friend to activists E.D. Amelia Boynton worked for the USDA in Selma, AL and educated others about nutrition, agriculture, food production, and healthcare. She made her home an office to strategize for the Civil Rights battles in Selma and helped plan the march from Selma to Montgomery with the SCLC. Washington Business College which provided opportunities for Black students in business and lobbied for federal loans to help students access vocational training. Lola Hendricks was the corresponding secretary for Fred Shuttlesworth’s Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights (ACMHR). She fought for desegregation in city parks and the Birmingham Public Library. Hendricks also assisted in the early planning of the SCLC’s involvement in the Birmingham campaign . Having experienced segregation as a child in the south, Viola Liuzzo was a believer in civil rights and became a member of the NAACP in Detroit. She helped to organize local protests before heeding the call to join the march from Selma to Montgomery after Bloody Sunday. Liuzzo helped to coordinate the march and was murdered for providing transportation to Black participants.
