Forty years ago, Feb 22, 1984 Paris. A date and place that defined my eye. In July 1983 I received a gold foil envelop with a French postmark, containing an invitation to submit work in a photo exhibition in Paris. At the time I had no clue who the organization was or how they knew of me. Then a 25 year old struggling photographer. I did not take it as being real thinking it was a scam because of the $500 entry fee. Giving it some thought, I visited the French Embassy in Chicago inquiring if this organization was real. After the embassy official reviewed and xeroxed the paperwork. I was given a phone number to the Embassy and asked to call in a couple of days. I called and was told it was real. I sent the international money order per payment instructions a day later. About a month later a French postmarked package was delivered, containing 25 invitations for my guests and photo mount specs, packing/shipping labels/instructions. This Vector Poster was drawn in Illustrator for my second year graphic design project. The project imagined a request from The Criterion Collection to design a vector poster for a special IFI screening of the 1944 film Arsenic & Old Lace. I loved the concept of the project as I am an avid fan of The Criterion Collection and The Irish Film Institute. This is definitely the kind of work I would love to do. Another bonus was that the film was fantastic! Challenged by @dylanjmz to find a BW image of mine that has never been published before. I thought it would be easy to find one as I must have hundreds of unpublished images lying around but the reality is very different. Anyway this was taken in 1992 at a London Lighthouse event that Dame Judi Dench was attending. Somehow I, as green as the grass on the other side, had been designated as the official photographer for LL and upon her arrival a very gracious Dame Judi was thrust in front of me with the words 'get a smudge of her will you?’ I had never photographed a famous person up close before, let alone an iconic thespian and out of pure nerves, I took one single frame and said thankyou. I honestly didn't anticipate anyone ever seeing the film. The look of surprise and delight on her face that one frame would suffice and that I obviously thought I was David Bailey was actually the next picture, which of course I missed. I was however very pleased with my single frame and I sent Judi a print last year and she was delighted to receive it.
