We had a 30th anniversary screening of The Crow last night for the members of our Brisbane polyamory community movie group, and it was awesome. Theme: April Fools (comedies) Feature: Black Knight (2001) Selected by: Bunni First-watch reviews (Out of 5⭐️): Bunni: I’ve actually seen this but it was so long ago that I remembered nothing, so pretty much a first-watch. I worried at the beginning that it really wasn’t going to be for me, but it picked up quickly and I became engulfed in the story. I’m kind of jealous because I think I would enjoy being transported to medieval times for like the day I’d be alive before being killed. The movie wasn’t all that funny but still quite enjoyable. There seems to have been a few movies that came out in the early 2000’s that are pretty universally hated but are actually just simple stories that are well done. This is another example, using its sense of adventure and subtly dark humor in the best ways. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Dimitri: Black Knight was pretty good. The few scenes of action were exciting, and Martin Lawrence was pretty funny throughout the entire film. The plot felt kind of overdone where it felt kind of pointless, but for comedies like this, it doesn’t really matter to me. It was definitely unique to go with a medieval theme, and I thought the end was awesome while still being humorous. Crank: 📀📀📀📀📀 (5/10 discs) An all out balls to the wall electric thrill ride that takes all sorts of basic common sense and just simply throws that out the window. In the nice 80 to 90 minute movie you are left with a fun thrill ride that is thoughtless, but entertaining as hell! Chev Chelios (Jason Statham) wakes up to a DVD showing that he plays, then sees that his enemy, injected him just moments before with a Chinese synthetic that is going to shut down his heart. The only way to stop it? By upping his adrenaline. I normally would say something like this would be beyond stupid, and this is in someways that but I’d say both actors and directors know how this is and everyone goes for it and it makes it better. This movie was low in the budget region, very high in the story region, extra high in the special effects region, and gloriously low in the acting region. Overall a very enjoyable horror film, with the right ingredients to highlight it's low budget goodness.
