Amazing first day @thedashbash! Couldn’t ask for more from a conference. It was inspirational and invigorating. 🥳 Even the North Carolina heat can’t keep me from having a great time. Reconnecting with friends I met at #blendfest19 four years ago like @annesaintlouis and @sarawademakesstuff plus so many people I’ve met only over zoom the last three years like @rachel.oftedahl and @marchomotion. 😘 Amazing and engaging presentations from @cabeza_patata @sekanisolomon, and so many more. The DP from The Tiny Chef Show spoke too! And totally wowed by the vulnerability and depth of topics by Macaela @newfangledstudios and Kevin Dart @chromospherestudio Thanks to @merynhayes for making sure I got to the conference after missing it two years due to Covid! Wahooooo!

Oh hi! It’s been awhile. Can you believe it’s been almost a year (a 100 years?) since Blend?! And what a doozy of an almost year it’s been… Remember that time we crammed nearly 700 people into one big room for an entire weekend? Here’s what that looked like. Thanks again for coming. And for being such a special bunch of humans. And for giving us our hug quota for the year. We didn’t know then that it was important to stockpile them, but we’re sure glad we did. Here’s the opening shot from the #blendfest19 titles ☀️ it’s fairly simple but I think everyone at @gunneranimation touched this shot in some way. Every year Duolingo has a Halloween party and it’s one of my favorite nights of the year. It’s a hard thing to prioritize a Halloween party invite for internal use when there are many other things happening at work, but I love the event so much I had to make time for it. I created this invite on my flight back from #blendfest19. I really love the design of old horror movie posters from the ‘50s and ‘60s (wacky type/hand painted/limited color palette) so I tried my best at replicating that feel. Projects no longer have one 16x9 video as a deliverable. Producing social cuts, reframed versions, and alternate media assets can be a smart way to up-sell to create more value for clients and for your business. 2. We all do projects that won’t make it in the portfolio. Instead of viewing this as wasted time, find a way to learn new techniques or refine your processes. It’s only a waste if you make it a waste. 3. Looking to behance, instagram, and vimeo can lead to recycling the same styles. Look for inspiration by immersing yourself in other arts, nature, history, books, movies or other things outside of the internet. Non-derivative inspiration brings interesting and fresh results. 4. Into the Spider-Verse was more than an artistic phenomenon. Every animation and design decision was driven by individual character psychology and the overall story of the movie. By applying the same thinking to client work, our storytelling value will increase. Technique for technique’s sake can make for some flashy but boring media. 5. 🍑

Here are a couple shots I got to touch from the Blend titles during my time at @gunneranimation this summer. Swipe right for process & BTS. . . . My primary responsibility on these titles was to figure out the Maya to C4D character animation pipeline. We took the Blend Fest Monster which was first animated in Maya by the ever so talented @rachelll.reid & then brought it into Cinema through a streamlined alembic workflow. The Challenging task was to come up with a Cinema facial rig that would seamlessly attach to the Maya character animation. We accomplished this using PSR constraints, Cinema’s new Volume Builder tools & some Xpresso. @john__hughes then took my rig & added some beautiful keys to take the animation across the finish line. Shoutout to @iansigmon & @nicforshee for just being amazing people & allowing me to be a small part of such an awesome project.

Swipe for VR Process Video! Hey all, we just finished a big project! For those not familiar, Gunner was asked to make the opening titles for the wonderful conference Blend in Vancouver last weekend! We got really excited and really ambitious.. to make a piece over 4 minutes and fully in 3D. 😬 One way we offset the amount of work was to model a lot of the environmental details in VR. I had been working on my home headset in the past, and the guys had been interested in one at work for a while... so at some point last spring we realized this would be the perfect project to jump in together! We figured out a whole pipeline from C4D to @oculusmedium and back, and learned a lot. Props to @nicforshee for being a tireless problem solver! It was honestly thrilling to connect the process together. In the second video here, I wanted to take you on a little tour of the scenes from the piece. Because VR is such an embodied experience, I’ve felt like I was actually IN those spaces, and wanted to take you with me. A lot of the base geometry was modeled by @marcus.bakke and @gernge in Zbrush and C4D, then I worked on top of it. And the beautiful styleframe paintings were by @slawekfedorczuk Hope it’s fun to see, and I would be excited to share more about my process in the future! There’s so much more to talk about! Congrats to the whole team, thanks Nick and Ian for trusting me, and thanks again to #blendfest19 for inviting us.. thanks so much for all the love @blendfest.ca. i had an incredible time working on the small part I had in making this world come to life! just wanted to share the moments I was responsible for. Swipe for process! character animation: i was mostly responsible for animating the blend monster. it was tricky animating every other frame in 15fps but I had a blast working with the rig. i had a lot of freedom to experiment with his personality. @john__hughes animated his lovely face and brought him even more to life! i also animated the goddess hand! i parented the hand to the ball and rotated around it to give the illusion of a camera move. tough stuff but i’m happy with how it came out. animatic: i worked on some of the early stages of the animatic. a lot of the ideas in this animation was an impromptu attempt to make the ending as energetic as possible. glad a lot of it made it in the final cut! #blendfest19
