The Camp test, also known as Christie-Atkins-Munch-Petersen (CAMP) test, is a biochemical test used to identify the presence of Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that can cause serious foodborne illness. In the test, Listeria monocytogenes is streaked perpendicular to Staphylococcus aureus on sheep blood agar. Listeria produces a toxin that enhances the hemolytic activity of Staphylococcus aureus, resulting in a characteristic arrowhead-shaped hemolysis where the two organisms intersect, as indicated by arrows. The Dienes phenomenon “in the wild!” This is the first time I’ve had a chance to see it occur randomly from a single sample! This is from a urine sample plated on blood agar. Proteus is an organism known first its characteristic swarming behavior when cultured on a non-inhibitory media like blood agar. The bacteria enter a hyper-flagellated state and emanate from their original colony, spreading across the surface of the media in waves. If all the proteus colonies on the media are of the same strain, the swarms will merge seamlessly where they meet. However if different strains’ swarms meet, the Dienes phenomenon occurs. The proteus are able to recognize the different living strain and the swarms refuse to merge, creating a clear line of delineation between them! It’s a super cool visualization of recognition and territoriality in bacteria! This plate has two or more strains of proteus originating from the same patient! You can see two clear lines of delineation on the plate, one smaller one looping at the top and a larger one from the top left of the plate a crossing all the way to the bottom right. Agglutinogens and other outer membrane proteins are important antigens. Bordetella pertussis causes whooping cough (pertussis), an acute respiratory infection marked by severe, spasmodic coughing episodes during the paroxysmal phase. Leukocytosis with lymphocytosis is also common during this phase of the illness. Transmission is by droplets. Moraxella catarrhalis on Chocolate agar. Moraxella (formerly Branhamella) catarrhalis was discovered at the end of the nineteenth century, and for many decades it was considered to be a harmless commensal of the upper respiratory tract. Moraxella catarrhalis grows well on blood and chocolate agar, producing small, nonhemolytic, grayish-white colonies that slide across the agar surface, like a hockey puck, when pushed with a bacteriologic loop. Gram-stained films reveal GNDC but M. catarrhalis often resists decolorization and thus may appear gram-positive. M. catarrhalis is DNAse positive, reduces nitrate and hydrolyses tributyrin (enabling differentiation from most Neisseria spp.). PCR (multiplexed with other respiratory pathogens, or bacteria causing middle ear infections) and MALDI-TOF are useful diagnostic tools. It is considered to be the third most common pathogen isolated in childhood sinusitis and otitis media and in adult chronic lower respiratory disease, as well as an etiological agent of pneumonia in immunosuppressed patients or those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It was first isolated in dogs, giving the bacterium its name. Actinomyces is part of the normal flora in the human mouth, throat, and gastrointestinal tract, and it typically does not cause disease in healthy individuals. However, under certain conditions, Actinomyces israelii can become pathogenic and lead to actinomycosis, a condition characterised by the formation of abscesses and the development of chronic, granulomatous lesions.
