It is found solitary or in groups and fairy rings in pastures and occasionally in woodland. It is widespread in temperate regions of Eurasia and possibly North America. Happy Fungi Friday! I found this tiny mushroom growing on a stick in the middle of a very muddy trail in the woods today. I’m not entirely sure what this one is, but it does remind me of the Hairy Long Stem Marasmius. It does grow in high numbers in this region. If it is something entirely different then let me know. The scientific name for the Hairy Long Stem Marasmius is Rhizomarasmius pyrrhocephalus. It belongs to the Basidiomycota phylum. It does have a long growing season. It is typically the first mushroom to start growing in the spring and the last one to stop fruiting in the fall. It grows in deciduous forests on leaves and decaying wood. It can grow on the ground, but you can also find it on fallen branches, sticks, twigs, and other woody debris. It is saprobic. It seems to like woody debris and leaves of oak and hickory. I'm a fan of Mycology. I have my favorites and can identify them with 100% accuracy. Some I am unsure of and usually leave them be. I'll take a picture and study them when I get home using my mushroom field manual. The Chanterells in this area are abundant and easily identified by their yellow color and trumpet like shape. Another yummy mushroom growing in North Carolina, the Black Morel, grows at the base of Tulip Poplar trees when they start to leaf. One year ago, I had just bought a #holbeingouache set in hopes of fixing the painting that I was working on. In my painting "I'll Make You Laugh", I was trying to create what would look like lush red velvet curtains, and watercolors just weren't accomplishing that for me. After making the test card for this gouache set, I instantly fell in love with their vibrancy, and I knew that I had found my solution. Before returning to my clown painting, I wanted to test out the new gouache paints, especially the red tones. So I decided to do an Amanita Muscaria painting, and I was so happy with how it turned out. I'm really glad I found these paints as I have found that I really like mixing them in with watercolors. They add an opacity and vibrancy that I can't get with watercolors, but they blend exactly like watercolors.
