And George is beginning to realize he’s not coming back. While the two of them didn’t play together all day, they would go at it around 4:00 everyday. And George would at some point go to find Blake… sometimes laying down with him, other times just sniffing him… checking in. But he’s been in and out of my weaving studio everyday… every hour clearly lonely and bored. He used to only come in there around 4:00 when he had to pee. So we’ve been playing a lot and going for longer walks. A friend sent me the last line of this quote a few days ago so I looked it up. It hits hard. It’s so true. •Grief, I’ve learned, is really just love. It’s all the love you want to give, but cannot. All that unspent love gathers up in the corners of your eyes, the lump in your throat, and in that hollow part of your chest. Grief is just love with no place to go. -Jamie Anderson Blake helped so many other dogs and dog owners after his osteosarcoma diagnosis and amputation. We hope to help many others recognize the signs of Hemangiosarcoma. To any dog owners out there. If you notice unusual bloat on your dog, go to the vet as soon as possible. We noticed it on Blake and found out, his abdomen was filling with blood. The bloat was due to internal bleeding that resulted from an aggressive Hemangiosarcoma on his spleen - a highly invasive canine cancer. This cancer causes blood vessels to branch, fragment, become leaky, and ultimately rupture. It's the cause of about two-thirds of heart and splenic tumors. It also made him anemic and weak as well as his gums and inner cheeks turning white. Our vet said we had a matter of days and that a splenectomy would only give us a few months. BLAKE’S CHAIR We can’t believe it’s been one month today without Blake. Walking by his empty chair is quite difficult. This is the chair he spent most of his days curled up in. He could watch the squirrels on the deck or sniff all the outside smells in the warmer months when the sliding door was open. We still can’t believe that Blake has been gone three weeks today. The tears still come daily. And George is beginning to realize he’s not coming back. While the two of them didn’t play together all day, they would go at it around 4:00 everyday. And George would at some point go to find Blake… sometimes laying down with him, other times just sniffing him… checking in. But he’s been in and out of my weaving studio everyday… every hour clearly lonely and bored. He used to only come in there around 4:00 when he had to pee. So we’ve been playing a lot and going for longer walks. A friend sent me the last line of this quote a few days ago so I looked it up. It hits hard. It’s so true. •Grief, I’ve learned, is really just love. It’s all the love you want to give, but cannot. All that unspent love gathers up in the corners of your eyes, the lump in your throat, and in that hollow part of your chest. Grief is just love with no place to go. -Jamie Anderson Blake helped so many other dogs and dog owners after his osteosarcoma diagnosis and amputation. We hope to help many others recognize the signs of Hemangiosarcoma. To any dog owners out there. If you notice unusual bloat on your dog, go to the vet as soon as possible. We noticed it on Blake and found out, his abdomen was filling with blood. The bloat was due to internal bleeding that resulted from an aggressive Hemangiosarcoma on his spleen - a highly invasive canine cancer. This cancer causes blood vessels to branch, fragment, become leaky, and ultimately rupture. It's the cause of about two-thirds of heart and splenic tumors. It also made him anemic and weak as well as his gums and inner cheeks turning white. Our vet said we had a matter of days and that a splenectomy would only give us a few months. Hard to believe today has been one full week since we said goodbye to Blake. We got his ashes back today along with a paw print. I know it’s not really him, but I’m so glad to have him with us. We found out he was cremated on Tuesday… the day I took George on a walk, and compared the snow to Blake’s fur. Coincidence? I’d started searching for a beautiful wooden box for his ashes. Thinking something like Koa would be perfect. When we opened the bag today and saw the bamboo box, it was so fitting. Our conversations were always about Blake going poop or not… he was so stubborn and would only poop along the edge of the property. He wasn’t a middle of the yard pooper. On Maui, his FAVORITE place to poop was tucked in under the bamboo hedge. It was a perfect spot neatly tucked away. It seems fitting the box would be bamboo. GEORGE APPRECIATION POST! We need to recognize & give thanks for our other sweet Maui boy, George during this difficult time. Not only has he been a comfort to us, he was always of comfort to Blake. All of these photos were taken last week while Blake spent most of his time on the sofa, under his blanket or on the heating pad. From day one, George would always lie on Blake or rested his head on him. Lots of those pics to come. It’s hard to tell what George feels. How often do we say Blake’s name? Seems the best to do is talk of Blake & not ask him where Blake is. That seems it would confuse him. George is a love bug, but mainly on his terms. He doesn’t like to be picked up & held on my chest as Blake did. But he loves to curl up beside John & I and always cuddled Blake. He’s more like a cat. Since Blake passed in the front room on Friday, George has gone in a few times to the spot in the floor where Blake passed. It’s beautiful & heartbreaking. Most days you would find George curled up on our bed while Blake would curl up in his chair, or on the daybed across from John in his office. However, the last few days George has spent most of his time with us in the living room. Today, was the first time he spent alone time in the bedroom. He’s also spent a bit of time in Blake’s spot on our sofa, nearest the window in the sunniest spot. I took George on a walk up the road today. A walk that was quite difficult for Blake. We walked up the road & while we were out it started to snow. As hokey as it sounds… the first thing that came to mind was that Blake was with us & the snow was his white hair falling on us. We’re doing our best to let George be George. To let him be alone, yet keep him engaged without overdoing it. To not expect from him anything more than what he is. To keep things as normal as possible for him. On Friday, John, George and I had to say goodbye to our beautiful Blake. He was such a strong and sweet boy who endured so much but tackled it all like a champ. Swipe through the images of our final day with him and to read his story. We hope that this will help someone else out who’s fur babe is experiencing similar issues. In light of these events, I’m quite behind on the delivery of new towels I wanted to have for you. They will come, but right now… it’s not a priority. I need time to grieve and process in my own time. He was a birthday present to myself 11 years ago and a great love of my life. I also need to make sure his bubbie George is processing it as well by spending quality time with him. He knows what’s happening. Yesterday. Yesterday was sad. Today is intolerable. We heartbreakingly let you know that we had to say goodbye to our Blake last night here at home. With his head on my leg, I whispered “thank you for being our beautiful boy” along with hundreds of “good boy” accolades in his ear just as he drifted off. John sat next to him with George on his lap. John’s sister offered to take George while it was happening, but I didn’t want him to come home to an empty house. Blake was ready. He knew. We knew. Vet came and it was over in minutes. She left and gave us time alone. I picked him up, not expecting him to be so limp We hugged and kissed on him. He then pooped on me for luck. That’s my take on the poop anyway. It all happened so fast, starting last Wednesday when I noticed he wouldn’t take his favorite snacks and his legs were sliding out and shaking more than usual. It was so bad in recent days that he didn’t want to walk. Blake is home and sleeping with tongue out. Surgery went well. Along with the one large growth, we also had doc take off 4 hematomas from his inner back right leg. Figured since he was under, might as well. Now we’re all tucked into bed and have to be back at vet at 8:20 tomorrow morning for a bandage check. Then in 2 weeks for removal of stitches. Biopsy results of the large growth in 5-7 days. We don’t test the small ones anymore as we’ve already tested them in the past and always benign. He’s had two of these that got about as big as a dime, then just vanished. But this one is fast growing and quite big. Before it gets bigger or doesn’t go away in its own… we just decided to remove it. It doesn’t seem to bother him too much. He’s licked it a few times but that’s it. The last pic is from August 19th when I caught him stealing green tomatoes off my plants. Look at the guilt. You can barely see the black dot starting to show up. 10 to 15% of dogs with osteosarcoma (osa) already have detectable lung metastasis when they are first diagnosed. In hindsight, I remember I needed to hustle to see what all our options were. Most, like myself, initially think to follow what your vet suggests, but in our case, I had friends in all levels of medicine encouraging me to seek second opinions, and my gut told me to check out new science.
