This weekend, we brought MSK 2 MTK to the place that raised me — Dino’s, our family restaurant. Being surrounded by family, friends, loyal customers (including my pre-K teacher) who believe in MSK 2 MTK and the mission of @memorialsloankettering reminded us of every reason why we are doing this. Hearing people in the room share their journeys with cancer made it all the more real, and I will never forget when a customer unaware of the event prior to walking in said, “If it weren’t for MSK, I wouldn’t be here right now.” Thank you to everyone who came out to support us and to the hardworking Dino’s staff, including my dad and 86-year-old grandfather with stage 4 lung cancer who worked the entire night. On Sunday I’m running the Cancer Research UK Race for Life 10km at Hopetoun House. One of my 2024 fitness goals is to run a 10km but this one means a bit more just now … Just before Christmas last year we found out that my dad has cancer. He’s had surgery and four rounds of chemo and is thankfully doing really well. But it’s never going to go away. It will get him one day. “I am proof that people with cancer can live full and active lives, even while on treatment. I’m not going to let it hold me back.” Chris Thomasson-Dale, a former nurse from Bolton, is currently being treated for advanced ovarian cancer at The Christie. She was diagnosed just two weeks before her wedding after noticing that she was losing a lot of weight. Two years, three different types of treatment and one clinical trial later, Chris is still here and getting the most out of life. She's currently in Spain walking 70 miles of the Camino de Santiago. Not satisfied with that, she's also taking on a skydive and 10k in May. “My journey has been a rollercoaster so far," adds Chris. "I know that nothing is promised, but I’m making the most of every day and know that taking part in research will help others. Shanu Modi apresentando os dados de um estudo que trouxe importantes avanços no tratamento do câncer de mama metastático. Naquele dia eu pensei: eu quero ver todo esse trabalho mais de perto. Eu quero ir até lá. Eu quero ampliar minhas fronteiras. Voltei pra casa com esse sonho. De passar um tempo aprendendo com grandes experts de um dos maiores centros de oncologia do mundo. Tive as maiores incentivadoras ao meu lado: @mariagmarquess minha filha e Flávia, minha esposa. Me encorajaram a tentar, me ajudaram a escrever os e-mails e colocar toda a minha motivação em palavras! Mandei o primeiro e-mail para Dr. Modi pedindo que fosse minha mentora no Memorial Sloan Kettering Câncer Center. Atualizava o e-mail de 5 em 5 minutos, ansiosa, mas também descrente após vários dias sem retorno. Duas semanas depois (já estava desistindo!), recebi a resposta: SIM! Comemoramos tanto em casa! Empolgamos, rimos, imaginamos como seria! Foi um processo de um pouco mais de um ano, com entrevistas, documentações, carta de recomendação (obrigada @dramandiofernandes), muitas aulas pra refrescar o inglês e a autoconfiança (@ju.xaviersa )… e de repente, esse dia de estar aqui chegou! Não cheguei aqui sozinha. Tive o apoio de toda a minha família, de amigas que estão me ajudando com os pacientes (@laura.s.costa @keniacmartins @fe_bonfim @gabrielaschlaucher), do @leandroramos_oncologia que sempre me apoia e é o meu maior mentor! E o mais bonito: tive o apoio e incentivo de todos os pacientes! Que compreenderam minha ausência temporária e comemoram comigo essa conquista! Estou aqui por mim, pra viver essa grande experiência (pessoal e profissional) e estou aqui principalmente para ser uma oncologista melhor e mais preparada para cuidar de todos os pacientes, que são tão especiais e o motivo primário de todo o meu esforço!
