By age eight she had shown me how to knit and crochet, embroider, bake, and cook. This was in a time when integrating an arts education was the pride of every community, whether in public schools or in the public square, and I was encouraged to participate in all of it: music, drawing & painting, poetry & creative writing, dance, photography. Over time, I added to my portfolio the needle arts, calligraphy & book arts, collaborative art-making. Making by hand has been my life! When I entered high school, we had just moved to Massachusetts from Ohio. I had made one friend before school started and I asked her if she wanted to start an ecology club with me. She said yes and got her older sister and some of her friends to join us. These two things -- making by hand and connecting to nature and the enviroment -- are what my business is about! It's been a busy week over here! I kicked off my 5-Day Challenge on Monday. Participants have been going into their wardrobe to uncover their inner wisdom about how they dress and style themselves and to bring a critical eye out beyond their closets to understand what brands are saying (and doing!) about their sustainable, ethical, and eco-friendly practices. Sustainable clothing depends on sustainable systems. What new systems must be created? And, what transformation needs to happen? The fashion industry is responsible for 10% of humanity's carbon emissions output but, amid the devastation brought on by the pandemic and the racial injustices, the impending ecological collapse is falling off the agenda. Consumerism is still eroding our planet and exploiting workers, but many have become collectively desensitized to it. Rumi's quote fits this moment. The fashion industry is unsustainable. Why does it produce so much clothing, relying on the devaluation of people in the supply chain and exploitation of precious natural resources? Well, we didn't just wake up one day and discover that our wardrobes were fueling a broken system. As it exists today, it's a product of generations of slavery, colonialism, mass-production, and deregulation. We can have a beautiful future with the healthy social structures we need (crave!) when they are brought forward by courageous, self-aware people. I am just one person. I'm trying to figure out a video hack to record my natural dye process! Beginning in 2016 I began experimenting with locally foraged plants to make natural dyes. I played with this on my own for a few years then brought it to some friends and continued to experiment. The results have varied dramatically, but I have enjoyed doing this immensely! What's the biggest distraction that keeps you from focusing on the next steps for your business? For me, many times, it's social media! I want to post something everyday on my platforms, but often blur the line between what is personal and what is for my biz. The way I have turned this around is to give myself time for personal social media twice each day: morning and evening, as much as I want, before my work day begins and after I've closed up my studio for the day. Social media for work happens in short doses throughout my work day (but sometimes I'm so into my flow that I miss for long stretches). Email for work and personal is just once each day. One senses a subtle shift in mood: the angle and quality of light and diminishing daylight betrays the warm summer temperatures. The average American throws away 80 pounds of clothing a year... not donated, sold, or repurposed, but tossed in the trash, destined for a landfill. One easy way to practice sustainability is to give your old clothes to someone else to wear and/or have. My maternal grandmother, Louise was a practical and pragmatic Irish-American mother of nine. She couldn't stand fussing over everyday clothing for little ones, and if the clothing still had lots of life and wear in it, it continued to be passed down. Many clothing items are cheaply and poorly made and often don't survive long enough to pass on. As a one-woman shop and clothing designer with a passion for getting more use out of vintage linens and menswear (even repurposing them as children's clothing sometimes), it feels good to know I'm reducing the impact on the environment and keeping clothes and things out of landfills. And, I'm always looking for new ways to repurpose clothing and table linens. Aside from sewing my own (and mending what I've got), thrifting and refashioning are my preferred modes of *shopping* for clothing. Good morning, friends -- I began designing clothes for my dolls at age five with cuts from the center fold of the choicest fabrics from Mom's amazing fabric stash. (*Designing clothes* is in air quotes...) Though made of fine fabric, they were extremely rude little dresses, made for my small, stiff-armed, hard plastic doll. Typically, they were a rectangle that overlapped in back with a safety pin to fasten, and holes snipped for the arms to go through. (None of the edges were finished...) Mom had a great eye for gorgeous textiles and she stored them in one of the built-in closets on the second floor. By chance, I'd discovered the stash of voiles and taffetas and dotted Swiss, brocades, peau-de-soie, and bouclés, rayon velvets, and herringbone. And I was never the same! I'd stand in there just to slowly run my hands over the stack of textures. I didn't know it at the time, but the closet was more than space to store fabric; it was space Mom claimed just for herself. We moved into the house when she was 23 years old and already had five children. I see that fabric closet now as a sanctuary, a place for safeguarding that creative and unique part of herself that threatened to get lost in "Motherhood". (I recognize the importance of reserving such a space...) By age six she was giving me sewing lessons and at age eight I successfully put in my first zipper. By age eight I had also learned to knit and crochet, embroider, and cook (though knitting and crochet didn't really "take" until later in life...) I thoroughly enjoyed preparing breakfasts for my whole family, replete with freshly pressed linen napkins at full place settings (Currier & Ives!), including a multi-vitamin for each person. Though it would be several years before I mastered the art of coffee-making, I did pour OJ for everyone and they waited for me to (proudly) serve them their plate of scrambled eggs, bacon, and toast. I was well on my way to becoming a fiber/textile artisan by then and enjoyed taking a place within the circle of women artisans in my family. What stories keep you connected to your business? 💚

New York Fashion Week will look a lot different this year, because, CoVid. Many designers are questioning it's existence, like, why do it at all? Saying that pretty clothes aren't enough to justify fashion week in the middle of a pandemic. I don't think it's enough to talk about designer clothing with a purpose and a mission. There's so much clothing for sale every day -- current estimates suggest that 150 BILLION new garments are produced globally each year. This consumption is unsustainable. Supporting this behavior means relying on a culture of disposability, and worse: 🌿 Producing plastic-based textiles uses ~342M barrels of oil/year (MacArthur Fdn, 2017) 🐑 Textiles we wear made from precious natural resources generate massive environmental impacts in their production. ⛓️77% of UK retailers believe there is a likelihood of modern slavery in their supply chain (Hult Research & Ethical Trading Initiative, 2016) From gender inequality to environmental degradation, the fashion industry continues to exploit people and resources. People want to know where their clothes are made and under what kinds of conditions. The issues in the fashion industry never fall on any single person, brand, or company. What we can't achieve alone, we can champion together. It's why it's so important that we all use our voices to transform the entire system. With systemic structural change, the fashion industry can lift millions out of poverty and provide them with decent and dignified livelihoods. ❇️ It can restore and conserve our planet. ❇️ Rachel Carson was a marine biologist and ecologist who can be credited with warnings about climate change and the hazards of pesticides. In Silent Spring (1962), Carson explained that our health is intimately connected to the quality of our environment. We can also thank her for generating the public support for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. ban on DDT, the Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act, the Wilderness Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, and the Endangered Species Act. Carson’s message is as urgent a call to action today as it was in 1962: As we bear witness to our health and environmental protections being stripped away by a federal anti-science agenda, we can be inspired to spur on a new wave of public engagement dedicated to safeguarding public health and enriching the quality and sustainability of our communities by supporting policies that promote clean energy, clean soil, clean water, and clean air. Natural fibers have been marketed to us for years as a natural, environmentally friendly option for our clothing. But, once production is scaled up globally, you understand that they are also produced under extreme chemical processes. Wool production (the US is something like 5th in the world for wool production, yet nearly all of our wool socks and suits are imported from Australia, New Zealand, and China...) has been exposed for animal cruelty in the treatment of sheep. And, while there can be no doubt that the production of synthetic fibers is dangerous to workers who make them and wearing and shedding micro-plastics is unhealthy to our air, waterways, and consumers, global production of natural fibers is full of issues, too. One of the best things we can do for the enviroment is to buy fewer textiles overall, and when we do buy them, to be as informed as we can be. It's one of the best arguments I've heard for a regional #fibershed -- a textile economy built on the transformation of our fiber and dye systems from the soil up. This is a grassroots movement that's been toiling away in the background of our lives for years. It's being led by farmers, ranchers, growers, artisans, and small to mid-size manufacturers who have dedicated their efforts to the understanding that the same soil that brings forth organic produce to feed us is the same soil that clothes us.
