Once upon a time (a few days ago) the land was cold and covered in snow. Now it is above freezing and the snow melts. Normally January and February are very cold months here so I'm not sure what prompted the sudden change. Last night Arlo got his nails trimmed. We were noticing that a few days after a trim, his feet were extra sensitive to the sidewalk salt. Day 2 of our adventure … We found a turnout with a really pretty set of walking trails. There was a small tree fallen across the path at one point, and big brave Logan had to be “encouraged” to hop over it. In Nipigon we enjoyed the view for a little bit before moving on. Finally make it to Winnipeg, where Rogue and Aine instantly bonded. It was a long day, but the weather was fine and the roads easy to travel. We have been super busy … avoiding the heat!! For those of you asking, Logan’s surgicals are almost completely healed over and the infection in his leg is gone. He still does not understand he is still recovering, and has been pushing his limits every day (including breaking into a run three weeks ahead of schedule!). The poopers have had it ruff sleeping on the couch in direct line of the air conditioner, watching movies in the dark, and getting extra special cold, creamy treats. Logan’s Road to Recovery … Well we had a bit of a set back over the weekend, which has kept us very busy … Logan slipped in his own dribble trail on the vinyl flooring and popped a stitch on his big tumour removal site. We cleaned it up and kept an eye on it, and kept him quiet for the rest of the weekend. Then Monday morning he had a large open wound in that spot. Off to the vet we go! They removed the stitches from his other three sites, took a culture from the wound, and now we wait for results with an open wound to heal. What was even more shocking is how much weight (mostly muscle mass) Logan has lost since he originally damaged his knees … he was 90 lbs/40 kg, went into surgery at 84 lbs/38 kg, and on Monday weighed 77 lbs/35 kg. Couple that with his lack of desire to eat and my head was spinning! What to do?? Chef XPuppy Mommy to the rescue!!! The emergency meal was ground beef, brown rice cooked in chicken broth with turmeric, parsley and oregano, and blended peas. Yesterday I hit the grocery and picked up the current meal blend: beef liver, ground beef, ground chicken, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, celery, pumpkin, and more of the rice mixture. Tonight we’ll add ground egg shells to get some calcium into him, as well as chicken bones (Rogue gets her bones whole because she loves crunching them up; Logan gets his bones ground because he swallows them whole 🤦🏻). If he eats his dinner like he ate his breakfast, then tomorrow we will mix some kibble into the raw mush. Logan’s Journey: Post Op Day 9 Yesterday Logan went out on his first 5 minute walk; today he had 2! One right after lunch, and another right before dinner. His second walk … well he’s wanting to run and play! And the drama! Tonight there was dispute over the rib bone they’ve been chawing on. Rogue snatched it away from Logan, who proceeded to announce to the world how unfair it was. Earlier today Logan could be found licking out the newly emptied cookie jar, and sleeping all tucked in with his favourite pillow. The rest of the dressings came off today (with the assistance of coconut oil … Logan now smells like a beach baby!). #silver4wellness has been applied to all his incisions, as well as a raw elbow we discovered in the bathing process. The swelling is almost completely gone from his feet and ankles, and he is walking a lot more. And, of course, what makes meds go down better than treats? Logan’s Journey: Post Op Day 4 Today was a scary (for the pawrents) day! Mr. Face decided to get up without help THREE TIMES!!! We managed a partial sponge bath while doing massage; range of motion is still very rough. The cone had to go back on because the dressings are now being removed. We only did two today; we’ll do the others tomorrow. Once the dressings were off and the area around the sutures were gently cleaned, we put some #silver4wellness gel along the incisions to sooth and promote healing. Logan’s Journey: Post Op Day 3 Last night and most of today Logan was only taking fluids if they were syringed into his mouth. Food was being spooned into him, but only small amounts. Oh the difference a day of rest makes! His first outing this morning his tail was wagging and he was trying to get into the right position to piddle. His last trip out before dinner he managed full relief!! Then he not only took his broth, but his puppy food AND a bit of kibble!! All this followed by drinking from his bowl on his own 🤗. He’s had massage a couple times, and cold packs, and hasn’t complained even once! Logan’s Journey: Post Op Day 2 The Face has been sprung! He needs a lot of help walking, and he’s not anywhere near himself yet, but I think he’s happy to be going home. We’re stopping on the way to pick up a couple cans of puppy food to try and stimulate eating, and we’ll pick up his favourite salmon sticks to encourage movement. LOGAN IS OUT OF SURGERY AND DOING WELL. He’s down a right meniscus, and has arthritis in the left knee, but both tumours came out intact and the surgeon is sure he was able to succeed in getting clear margins. He probably won’t come home tomorrow, but will on Thursday if he’s up and walking.
