Historic Point of Rocks Project Construction: There were quite a few challenges with this project. The first - was a long regulatory process with the Town of Brewster (Conservation, Zoning, & Historic) before it could begin construction. The second- we knew the historic structure needed to be lifted and a new foundation poured (the existing foundation were literally some stones the house was braced too!). Once we had received all the necessary approvals, received, the permit, and lifted the existing cottage and set it back down on a new full foundation โ- we worked with our local structural engineer to shore up the existing framing at the shack and began construction on the new addition. The overall concept & design for the project was to touch the existing fishing shack as lightly as possible and provide the new open living plan, mudroom, and primary bedroom suite at the proposed addition (while keeping the addition in scale with the existing cottage). An unusually low tide allowing the Brewster Flats to show off the full beauty of its endless layers on a sparkling spring morning. WHAT WEโRE THINKINGโฆ The Brewster Flats are the largest tidal flats in N. America, yet we are constantly surprised at how many Cape Cod visitors (and sometimes even residents) are completely unaware of their existence and stunning beauty. At low tide, exposed sand often extends more than a mile from shore, revealing seemingly endless arrays of bars, ripples, pools, and rivers. One of our greatest joys at the gallery is sharing the magic of the flats with guests, and encouraging people to visit and explore this remarkable landscape.
Mixing in a salad every now and then never hurts, especially when it's our flavorful Casar! And if you're not on that wave, you can always make it a wrap๐
The Brewster Flats at sunset and low tide. When I arrived during the golden hour (one hour before sunset), it did not look promising. A big, black, low-hanging cloud covered the sun. It started to clear at sunset, and the sky and flats lit up during the blue hour (one hour after sunset). It was like magic....

A symphony of texture and light appearing as I returned to shore after a recent evening spent on the far outskirts of the Brewster Flats. WHAT WEโRE THINKING... Often, the most subtle details of Nature end up becoming the most expressive components of a photographic image. During our photography workshops and classes, we often speak about the importance of creative mindfulness when photographing, and the awareness of all that is happening in a given moment. While it is always special to witness vibrant skies and dynamic conditions, it is sometimes the smallest details - like the subtle, flowing patterns of sand on the flats - that can be most impactful when creating an image expressing the true beauty of a moment.
