Mistletoe! This is a piece of mistletoe grown on apple from one of the Glastonbury apple orchards - it takes about a year to season so I can work with it and for it not to crack - this piece is from winter 2022. Mistletoe does not grow especially thick here - although there are species that grow elsewhere that do. It grows with these elbow that mean it’s impossible to get a long, straight piece…. I said what I said...... 😜 Where are all my baby potion-makers at? Double tap if you're a fellow pot stirrer. This is little me. With the super-long white-blonde hair, the kookie 80's fashion sense, surrounded by petals, twigs and my mixing pot. This was me. The real me. Before I was affected by being told daily that I had to "do this" and "behave like that" so that people liked me and I'd fit in. I spent decades being "normal" and following the advice of those older than me..... swallowing the little me who adored being bare-footed, looking at the clouds and just being me, ignoring her cries to be let out. It wasn't until I had Little Bug and realised the "advice" given was just plain bullying and a huge contributor to living with a life of depression and at times, suicidal thoughts. Those same bullies who had told me how I needed to act and dress to be accepted had weirdly gone on to live a life doing exactly all the things they bullied me into not doing now they're older, and it's "totally ok" *rolls eyes in sarcasm*. So to all of you who are being conditioned with the same messages I once was, honestly, ignore it and spend YOUR life living YOUR dreams and making those potions and collecting stones whilst bare footed and dancing in the sunshine. Because in the long run, those people telling you those other messages are not your people. They want you to dim your light because they don't have the courage to let their own shine (and to be honest, when you're older you won't give af who likes you and who doesn't, anyway!). The world needs YOUR light. It needs your magick, especially right now. This week I made myself a black scrying mirror, using a vintage style photo frame with glass I simply sprayed the back of the glass with black spray paint allowed to dry and popped it back in the frame. So much cheaper than buying one made from Obsidian! There's something so enticing and mesmerising about a black mirror! I find myself staring at it even from afar when I'm sat in the room or when I walk by, my husband even told me he'd been gazing at it the other day. When I started this project I thought that people might be using magic to have an impact on politics. But I had thought that, because of the nature of the history of "the witch" that that magic might be particularly focused on gender politics, particularly on women's rights. It turns out that whilst there *is* concern around the erosion of women's rights, particularly reproductive rights, within the witchy community there is actually more use of magic in relation to: global politics (what scholars in my discipline might think of as "high politics" like conflict, war, elections etc) and ecological politics (addressing issues like climate change - which isn't so much of a surprise). In addition, I had not considered the extent to which politics would make its way into the witchcraft community - through my interviews there is a strong sense that gender politics is a key issue/source of debate between magical practitioners. Working through the elements in the OBOD Bardic Grade is wonderful, getting to know the elements and which aspect are within us, finding balance and discovering things about ourselves we might not know or things which have been dormant is absolutely amazing. It has allowed me to find harmony with all of them integrating each element within myself and truly feeling into each one. Seeing how I also relate to them externally and appreciating the elements within my daily life and routine. My ancestry results are in! I also run my results through My True Ancestry to have a look how closely I match with ancient DNA (not guna lie the latter was confusing to try and get my head around) So interesting, I've also been tracing my family tree on ancestry, the DNA whilst absolutely not necessary at all to be able to honor your ancestors, has for me at least helped as there were parts of my family line I was unsure of and this has certainly aided in allowing me to see things I would otherwise have been unaware of. It sort of explains certain feelings I have had when I've been to certain places. It really puts into perspective how truly amazing life is and how many people must have come before us. It makes you think and I love that. The gorse is in blossom! To be fair, gorse is often in blossom somewhere - but this gorse is especially precious since it’s the first time it’s bloomed and is my own gorse that some kind bird seeded for me a couple of years ago. The yellow flowers smell of sweet coconut and to my delight seem to also be very appealing to ladybirds…. Which I’ve been trying to lure to my garden for years to eat aphids. Gorse is very thorny and is invasive in some countries (Australia for eg). Here it’s native and is not a ‘normal’ garden plant - but it is one of the trees often associated with the ogham alphabet so I’m happy. A few nice days over Dark Moon and I spent a bunch of time painting scrying mirrors in the garden. Many of my mirrors are made from vintage and upcycled frames - these ones are brass and once contained badly faded “chocolate box” style miniatures. These ones are convex, and I have some flat ones also - several have already found homes, but I have a few in my place of things now. This time of year is busy for many reasons - not least gathering many sticks to dry and season over the spring and summer for all kinds of crafts - especially ogham. I don’t harvest wood for any of my crafts - much comes from storm damage, hedging, forestry and prunings. Hedging and woodland management is pretty much done for the year as the birds are nesting, and thanks to that I find lots of my supplies - these long ogham staves are made on the woods that are most often associated with each ogham fed - find them in my place of things now! I have wanted to visit this beautiful ancient spring since I moved to the village almost two years ago but have never gotten round to it until now. I will definitely be visiting this place more, you can definitely feel the healing energies of the water here. I left an offering for the local Deity/Water Spirit and took a little of the water home with me. I’ve long flirted with geomancy and decided it was time deepen my flirtation - there are multiple ways of working with geomancy - including those which need special tools at all, but I wanted something a little more portable - giving me a couple of options - a set like this, or a set of tablets, one for each possible combination of 1s and 2s. I went with this option since it feels more authentic (to me)…. And of course I made a few extra sets - I’ll have one available in my next update. Yesterday’s walk was actually not raining! The sun beginning to peep out - the fields are very muddy and showed me deer tracks! These will be roe deer, of which we have a fair few - they tend to hang about in groups of 4-6 and mostly don’t want to get too close. I love seeing them, but also have to be constantly aware - my hound is half a deerhound and if he spots a deer in the distance proceeds to howl and dance in his back legs singing the song of his people deprived of their ancestral prey…… he’s a big chap and very loud and it can be quite hard to hang on. And no! Labyrinths on the underground! In 2013 a different labyrinth design was created by Mark Wallinger for each of the 270 underground station to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the underground - the labyrinths a metaphor for the millions of underground journeys taken. While I believe there’s an app to guide you to each, I enjoy stumbling across them on the rare occasions when I’m in London. This one is at Paddington - I found on my way home last week. I love that as you engage with interviewees they raise more questions more often than providing you with solid universal answers. Human reality and 'truth' is always messy and convoluted and contextual in so many ways. I am constantly amazed by the perspectives and nuances that other people's responses suggest and illuminate for me. Some recent interviews have made me think about whether the gender politics I am researching is gender politics in general, in particular political settings or even the gender politics within witchcraft itself. Is social justice within communities a form of engaging in wider social justice concerns? Are there moments where engaging in witchcraft or magical practice bedded in your own heritage and traditions to effect change in a political context outside of your context and traditions is inappropriate? What does that mean for the issue itself or the people involved? How do we draw these ethico-political lines and who gets to decide? . . . Next stage of wee wand pendants - they’ve had a couple of coats of beeswax polish. I make my own polish from bars of beeswax from a local beekeeper slowly melted and mixed with herb infused oil - sometimes I use rosemary, this time lemon balm, which makes the polish able to be rubbed into the wood. Next I’ll string them with a cord and a wooden bead or so from my collection and they’ll be ready to be photographed so they can find their new homes.
