In 2009 I took a random improv class. And it was complete serendipity that improv would go on to become such an integral part of my life. It really seemed unlikely. I am highly introverted. I love a good spreadsheet. I bend towards pessimism. I am overly structured. I don’t like change - at all. I am the female version of Sheldon Cooper from the Big Bang Theory - minus the 2 PhD’s. I say all that to say that improv is about as far away from my core personality as it gets. And yet, somehow, I found a way to make my personality work performing on stage. I lean on sarcasm. I’m fond of using facial expressions. Physicality is a favorite choice. I pay attention - to everything. And more often than not, my character is an angry Russian mobster. (Make of that what you will!) Improv has been a part of my life for the last decade and a half. I can’t imagine where I would be now without it. It literally changed my life. It unequivocally made me a better human. And there’s not a single day that goes by that I’m not grateful for this extraordinary gift. Immeasurable gratitude for all the improvisors I’ve met along the way...that I’ve had the enormous privilege of learning from and sharing a stage with...that made me into the person that I am today. We deliberately named The Improv Lab a “Lab” because we wanted people to experiment - to “tinker”. I love nothing more than when we take a game and tinker with it. When we bend it...we rearrange, reverse or reimagine it...scale it...take it down to the studs and rebuild it...scrap it altogether...or even deliberately break it. I cannot tell you how deliriously happy that makes me. Because it’s this dabbling, this experimentation, this reiterating that creates massive learning. What did I learn about myself...? What did I learn about the process...? What did I learn about others who were doing this with me...? What do I do now that I know what I know...? Life is a series of experiments. Find yourself a lab and learn to tinker.
So.... 3rd Thursday Improv was even more delightful than usual. We had 5 new players - and one of them Ryan literally invited in off the street while he was on a photo shoot. Ryan has a way of making friends like that :) And then the magic kicked in and 9 people bonded over humor and what are now inside jokes. My favorite line of the night: “Are you...Summer-Santa....?!!” And if you really think about it, is just one Santa enough...? That was really quite brilliant!! And finally, during the feedback circle, one compliment left us all smiling: “Hashtag, I’m happy you exist!!” BEST NIGHT OF THE MONTH 🧡🧡🧡

“What are your 3 favorite milks...?” That was the EXACT question from a session participant. Let me back up. Improv tends to be scary and weird - or at least a little awkward at first. So to put session participants at ease before we start, I give them a chance to ask me any question(s) that they want. The more weird the better - we’re all in this together - and I’ll be awkward with you. So “what are your 3 favorite milks” was the question that nearly stumped me! But I rallied for the win: 1) Dark Chocolate Silk Almond milk, 2) Great Value 2% milk and 3) Hiland EggNog. Student entrepreneurs from across the country compete over the weekend for $100,000 in prize pool money. The competition is designed to simulate the process of raising venture capital for high-growth enterprises, and the Heartland Challenge has awarded over $350,000 since its inception.

Seriously, college students are the best! Another fantastic workshop! The University of Arkansas Office of Entrepreneurship and Innovation hosts a variety of workshops (among MANY other things!) to introduce students to the world of entrepreneurship. In today’s workshop, “Applied Improvisation for Entrepreneurs’’, we looked at how to strengthen your entrepreneurial mindset using the core principles of improv. Because mindset matters. And in that spirit of understanding our mindset, we unpacked one of my favorite discussions - curiosity versus critiquing - using the game of Fortunately / Unfortunately which resulted in a robust (and rather humorous!) debrief discussion. Finally as a wrap, I shared a couple of my favorite quotes from my own entrepreneurial journey: * If everyone understands what you’re talking about, you’re late. * It never gets easier. Oooh, words. I love words!! LOVE LOVE LOVE!!! So what a thrill to be a guest speaker in a journalism class at the UofA taught by the one and only Clint Schaff. We used what makes the craft of improv work to draw inspiration for various communication platforms: how we write (frame of mind) and why we write (perspective) for print articles, social media, and podcasting. Students have big dreams....and I love that I get to dream alongside them even if it’s only for the length of an average college class.

Roberto Hirche spielt seit 2000 Improtheater, war 14 Jahre beim TmbH in Konstanz Ensemblemitglied und startete 2005 das Improtheater Konstanz (www.impro-konstanz.de), das er in Mitten der Pandemie mit einer Kollegin zu GmbH ausgebaut hat. Der Hauptfokus seiner Arbeit liegt in der Verbindung von Impro und dem systemischen Ansatz, um Menschen zu vermitteln, wie sie entweder auf der privaten oder beruflichen Bühne mit mehr Freude und Leichtigkeit agieren können. Dabei bespielt er unterschiedliche Bühnen. Ob mit 6 oder mit 750 Teilnehmenden macht für ihn keinen Unterschied. Wichtig ist, dass die Menschen auf leichte Art zusammenkommen und neben dem Spaß auch immer ein Lerneffekt entsteht. Er brennt so leidenschaftlich für die Kunstform Improtheater, dass er diese Freude auch an seine Workshopteilnehmenden, egal ob jung oder alt, vermittelt. Sam’s Club in general just makes me happy. I mean they have fresh squeezed orange juice (oh my!), the most incredible flowers (it’s tulip season everyone), macaroni and cheese in prepared meals (like, it’s literally all done for you!), books (BOOKS!) and right now Tim Tams - but only for a “limited time” unless WE ALL GO BUY SOME and convince the universe we need these amazing chocolatey biscuits ALL THE TIME...because we absolutely do! Another reason I love Sam’s Club is that they relentlessly invest in professional development. I recently had the great privilege of working with the entire merchandising organization, using Applied Improvisation to help drive relationships. And everyone in the room was brave and brilliant - just like always. Yes, I do love me some Sam’s Club!! Thank you, Raley O’Neill for the invitation....and the continued partnership over the years.
The world is driven by massive systems of measurement where many of us are trying to “measure up” in some way: get straight A’s... make varsity in our sport... sit first chair in band... get tenured in academia... become a principal dancer... achieve best-seller status as a writer... etc. Whatever “it” is, we spend an enormous amount of time trying to stack “it” up against others. In this workshop we started with the premise that everyone in the room already had an “A”. You’re golden. And if everyone already has an “A”, then what’s POSSIBLE now....? What would you try if you knew you couldn’t “fail”...?! And so began 5 hours of intensive Applied Improvisation embracing the notion of failure, keeping in mind that failure is an event - not a person. It just never gets old - the use of Applied Improvisation in the entrepreneurial space - because they are similar in so many ways. Resilience, innovative thinking, curiosity, understanding risk, human centered design, embracing failure, storytelling, problem solving, collaboration, deep listening, empathy, sitting in the tension. And I am beyond fortunate to be able to partner with the University of Arkansas, Office of Entrepreneurship and Innovation (OEI) on a wide range of programs. These founders serve as the inaugural cohort of the Bounds Accelerator program, which is focused on building solutions in the retail value chain that leverage emerging technologies.

I don’t always know what will resonate with a team during an Applied Improvisation session, but I do know something will strike a chord. This time it was the power of the quote we have painted on the bathroom wall (you’ll see why when you read it - picture 2) at The Improv Lab. This simple message pulled at a thread through the entire team session. And it was inspiring to see everyone open up in such an unbelievably personal way. Thank you, Ryan Beck, for shepherding an enormously genuine team. NW Arkansas is unbelievably rich in talent in the CPG world. And this Supply Chain team from Kenvue was the best of the best. We spent a few hours focused on Applied Improvisation methods and mindsets to deepen collaboration and drive team unity. And without a doubt, we had some of the richest session debrief conversations to date. Incredible, incredible team..... All my best, Becky (because what’s a gathering without a few inside jokes!!)
Sidebar did another swanky show at BlakeSt Saturday night and it was a little rowdy - in the best way possible. Also - STANDING ROOM ONLY!! A few things I’m still laughing about today: we tend to obsess over social media, we rocked the house with break-dancing (“Jenny from the Block”!), it’s not a good idea to soil yourself at the annual holiday party, we can make every sound that you hear on a construction site, don’t go to a Ropes course unless you’re prepared to lose your spouse to the lead facilitator, we can’t mime AT ALL (reindeer, cats or aliens), heck - some of us can’t even spell aliens!, weird things happen in the grocery store walk-in freezer, and jujitsu is unbelievably funny when done using a Russian accent. PS: picture 2 => That’s how you know you’re a BIG DEAL - when your troupe photo is on the bathroom wall!! PPS: pictures 3 & 4 => We hosted an improv “workshop” before the show for BlakeSt members and it was INCREDIBLE!! S e r i o u s l y....these folks did not hesitate one bit to jump in and embrace the craft. And they were good - like really good - so good that they even performed in a few games during the show. YES, THAT GOOD!! Well done, well done indeed.

I love the newly-forming / merging-teams / get-to-know-you / let’s-laugh type of session. I really do! No massive agenda or complicated competencies. Just humor and bonding. Human-ness at its best. I'm routinely asked how certain groups of leaders (lawyers, engineers, accountants and technology folks) react to the Applied Improvisation platform. And my standard response is "quite well, because people tend to be people." I had the enormous privilege of recently working with 2 different Walmart finance teams (tax and corporate finance). And yes, they were all quite brilliant. Well, other than the extreme judgement when I responded that I don't always start my Excel spreadsheets in cell A1. Apparently that's some epic level of wrongness. But other than that, we all got along swimmingly well. I loved every minute with these leaders!
For a mostly introverted group, we sure had spirited debriefs! And I would expect nothing less from a Walmart team of communications specialists! While I did my best to create massive chaos in the Patterns Drill, I loved that one team member stepped in and redirected the flow for positive gain for everyone. Well done. Well done, indeed.
