There’s tension all around us – all the time. So maybe it’s not a problem to be solved but rather a stretch to be managed. We deliberately named The Improv Lab a “Lab” because we wanted people to experiment - to “tinker”. I love nothing more than when we take a game and tinker with it. When we bend it...we rearrange, reverse or reimagine it...scale it...take it down to the studs and rebuild it...scrap it altogether...or even deliberately break it. I cannot tell you how deliriously happy that makes me. Because it’s this dabbling, this experimentation, this reiterating that creates massive learning. What did I learn about myself...? What did I learn about the process...? What did I learn about others who were doing this with me...? What do I do now that I know what I know...? Life is a series of experiments. So.... 3rd Thursday Improv was even more delightful than usual. We had 5 new players - and one of them Ryan literally invited in off the street while he was on a photo shoot. Ryan has a way of making friends like that :) And then the magic kicked in and 9 people bonded over humor and what are now inside jokes. My favorite line of the night: “Are you...Summer-Santa....?!!” And if you really think about it, is just one Santa enough...? That was really quite brilliant!! And finally, during the feedback circle, one compliment left us all smiling: “Hashtag, I’m happy you exist!!” BEST NIGHT OF THE MONTH 🧡🧡🧡

“What are your 3 favorite milks...?” That was the EXACT question from a session participant. Let me back up. Improv tends to be scary and weird - or at least a little awkward at first. So to put session participants at ease before we start, I give them a chance to ask me any question(s) that they want. The more weird the better - we’re all in this together - and I’ll be awkward with you. So “what are your 3 favorite milks” was the question that nearly stumped me! But I rallied for the win: 1) Dark Chocolate Silk Almond milk, 2) Great Value 2% milk and 3) Hiland EggNog. Photo: Each year I have the great privilege of kicking off the University of Arkansas Office of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Heartland Challenge during the Team(s) Welcome Reception....with this year marking the 5th annual gathering! Student entrepreneurs from across the country compete over the weekend for $100,000 in prize pool money. The competition is designed to simulate the process of raising venture capital for high-growth enterprises, and the Heartland Challenge has awarded over $350,000 since its inception.

Jessilee here 👋🏻 I had the chance to take a selfie in my old stomping grounds in Old Folsom yesterday after facilitating a team building session with Sacramento State. Sutter Street Theatre was where I started teaching improv as an intern and I used to love spending my days there. It’s changed so much since those days! 🚂 One of the many things improv has taught me is to go with the flow sometimes. When your former improv student writes a book, you sit up and take notice. When your former improv student writes a book about the therapeutic benefits of improv, specifically addressing a number of mental health challenges, you stand and applaud from the front row. When your former improv student @real.life.mental.wellness asks you to blurb it? Well, you blurb it, and just sit there, chuffed and honored to be asked to do so. Seriously, whatever I can say about "This Book Is Cheaper Than Therapy," I've covered in the blurb below (plus, they've been vetted by proofreaders and publishers and by the author herself). But I'll only add that they reflect a life lesson this art form, improv, taught me long ago: whatever your endeavors or goals, no matter how personal -- whether it's building a business, a practice, or yes, a healthy, intentional life -- you can't do it alone. You need help, guidance, insight, sponsors, mentors, people to point the way. The pull-yourself-up-by-your-bootstraps attitude gets you only so far: at some point you recognize someone else in your life made or bought the boots, taught you to put them on, and pointed out the straps, and that you should continue to seek those people out. People like Liz, who's done us all a favor by providing a toolbox that keeps us healthy. And thank you, Liz, for your first book, and for my first blurb! There are several steps that take us from WORK to PLAY. 1. WRAP. This marks our transition from work to personal life. It’s when work stuff is ended and boundaries are set, like completing tasks, putting away work-related things, and setting time. 2. EASE. The moment when we allow our body and mind to relax and shift focus. This also allows the momentary release from the stresses of work. 3. SHIFT. In this phase, there is a symbolic transition ritual signaling the shift from work to play, like changing of clothes or you playing your music. A mind shift also occurs where we lat go of lingering work thoughts and worries. 4. FLOW. This is when we allow ourselves to be fully immersed in our chosen play activity - when our minds are clear, thoughts converge, and our bodies are engaged. How would it be or feel like if we viewed WORK as PLAY? Think how we would cycle through these phases. Day 2 of Sagwan with Jesus’ Helping Hands Hospital saw a number of new things. Tried new exercises with wonderful results, edited on the fly adapting and changing the module as the day unfolded, and took more time connecting with the participants. As a facilitator, Sagwan was memorable and I certainly learned a lot. Anyone can improvise and, truly, improv is for everyone. I take with me the stories that I heard, the joy that we shared, and the generosity of spirit that shone from everyone. Dr. Therese and Dr. Dado not only built a rock in their community, but also a crested small wonderful family. Day 1. Had a wonderfully meaningful time with a cross functional team from Jesus’ Healing Hands Hospital. We explored what it truly means to be empathic, to wield status and power, and to be present for each other. And the session, while resounding with laughter, really felt intimate, and purposeful, and full of joy. Thank you JHHH for jumping into it, trusting the process, and being vulnerable. Jessilee here! 👋🏻 Today I’m looking back to 2013, when I graduated from California State University-Sacramento with my BA in Theatre sporting this thoroughly decorated and needlessly extra graduation cap (peep those craft skills! 👀 💅 ) When I graduated, I wanted to pursue a career as a professional actor. Three days after I got my degree, I was flying to Missoula, MT on a contract with the incomparable Missoula Childrens Theatre - one of the best and hardest experiences of my life. Being on the road was hard. I loved the company and the work I was doing, but I missed Sacramento so much I could feel it in my bones. The only way I could keep the homesickness at bay was talking to my family on a daily basis and by planning what I would do when I got back. And the answer was (prepare to be shocked) starting a new project involving improv and sketch comedy. And that started me on a long road towards what I do now with Windhaus Improv. The 21-year-old Jessilee who deliberately put “yes, and...” on this cap because she knew improv would be a lifelong passion would be elated to know that, this past Friday, 32-year-old Jessilee worked with our Alma Mater where we got our degree 11 years later; specifically, the Sac State Division of Administration & Business Affairs. The team hired me to facilitate a team building workshop for their strategic planning meeting using applied improvisation via an improvisation-based business that I founded (my third performing arts related business!). I had an absolute blast working with the team (special shoutout to Margaret Hwang, Ed.D. for having me!) who immediately saw the value improv could bring to their team (including crying from laughter and making many Sac State related inside jokes 🐿 ). Life doesn’t always go how you expect it to when you’re 21. I am not currently onstage singing “Gimmie, Gimmie” from Thoroughly Modern Millie. Seriously, college students are the best! Another fantastic workshop! The University of Arkansas Office of Entrepreneurship and Innovation hosts a variety of workshops (among MANY other things!) to introduce students to the world of entrepreneurship. In today’s workshop, “Applied Improvisation for Entrepreneurs’’, we looked at how to strengthen your entrepreneurial mindset using the core principles of improv. Because mindset matters. And in that spirit of understanding our mindset, we unpacked one of my favorite discussions - curiosity versus critiquing - using the game of Fortunately / Unfortunately which resulted in a robust (and rather humorous!) debrief discussion. Finally as a wrap, I shared a couple of my favorite quotes from my own entrepreneurial journey: * If everyone understands what you’re talking about, you’re late. * It never gets easier. Oooh, words. I love words!! LOVE LOVE LOVE!!! So what a thrill to be a guest speaker in a journalism class at the UofA taught by the one and only Clint Schaff. We used what makes the craft of improv work to draw inspiration for various communication platforms: how we write (frame of mind) and why we write (perspective) for print articles, social media, and podcasting. Students have big dreams....and I love that I get to dream alongside them even if it’s only for the length of an average college class.

Sam’s Club in general just makes me happy. I mean they have fresh squeezed orange juice (oh my!), the most incredible flowers (it’s tulip season everyone), macaroni and cheese in prepared meals (like, it’s literally all done for you!), books (BOOKS!) and right now Tim Tams - but only for a “limited time” unless WE ALL GO BUY SOME and convince the universe we need these amazing chocolatey biscuits ALL THE TIME...because we absolutely do! Another reason I love Sam’s Club is that they relentlessly invest in professional development. I recently had the great privilege of working with the entire merchandising organization, using Applied Improvisation to help drive relationships. And everyone in the room was brave and brilliant - just like always. Yes, I do love me some Sam’s Club!! Thank you, Raley O’Neill for the invitation....and the continued partnership over the years.
The world is driven by massive systems of measurement where many of us are trying to “measure up” in some way: get straight A’s... make varsity in our sport... sit first chair in band... get tenured in academia... become a principal dancer... achieve best-seller status as a writer... etc. Whatever “it” is, we spend an enormous amount of time trying to stack “it” up against others. In this workshop we started with the premise that everyone in the room already had an “A”. You’re golden. And if everyone already has an “A”, then what’s POSSIBLE now....? What would you try if you knew you couldn’t “fail”...?! And so began 5 hours of intensive Applied Improvisation embracing the notion of failure, keeping in mind that failure is an event - not a person. They just had an exam earlier that day and most didn’t know what to expect. And what began with feelings of exhaustion and uncertainty ended up with lightness and laughter and heartfelt sharing. I have played with numerous residents and consultants but engaging with medical students hits differently. This was the first f2f group that got introduced to medical improvisation (first in the Philippines) and I am left with few words. Just wow. Smart. Insightful. Human. Thank you for jumping in and for being vulnerable. There’s a maxim that improvisors embrace that goes like this: “Just bring a brick and together we’ll build a cathedral.” You don’t have to have it all figured out. Just bring your best self and your best ideas, merge them with the best contributions from others, and watch amazing things happen. At the recent Outdoor Cap / Junk Brands 2024 kickoff meeting I talked about agility (in an ever-changing world) and collaboration (putting yourself in the place of most potential).
