BEST SETTINGS FOR PORTRAITS We all want to nail our portraits and create images that really tells the story of the person we are photographing. The thing is though, after fumbling through your settings, trying to nail your focus and get the lighting right, it can sometimes be hard to still have time and creative energy left over to story tell. How many times have you found yourself apologising to someone when you are photographing them because you felt like you were taking too long to get your settings right that you just killed the mood? Or how many times have you just reverted back to shooting in Auto because you got so lost in your settings that you panicked and thought that was your only way out….only to be disappointed with what your camera has captured in Auto? We have all been there. In fact, that is where we all start! Let me help you get your head around your settings for portraits with my super easy way of setting my camera and in an order you will always remember. Shooting in manual: Fstop – smallest available to you (this will depend on your lens and will sit somewhere between 1.8 and 4) Shutter Speed – 1/250 for a still subject Iso – Put your camera onto live view and increase until you have the right brightness Use those same settings in that same order each time and I can guarantee you manual shooting with you will easily click and you will soon be on your way to calm and meaningful shooting. TRY THIS BEFORE SHOOTING IN MANUAL We all want to be the masters of our own cameras and have complete creative control over the images we are creating. Shooting in manual does this for us and so much more! But, it’s a lot to learn isn’t it? You can be forgiven for feeling overwhelmed trying to learn everything that goes into shooting in manual and for even going back to shooting in Auto when it all gets too much. Lord knows I did that many times before mastering manual shooting. If you do a feeling flustered over learning manual, try a stepping stone inbetween Auto in Manual. There are preset shooting modes on your camera that allow you to control one aspect of shooting while your camera takes care of the rest. You can control either f stop, shutter speed or iso in these shooting modes. When you are able to concentrate on just one setting and allow your camera to handle the rest it allows you to more quickly understand how the different settings affect your image and get your head around how to effectively use it in your shooting. How to choose the right lens We are so spoilt for choice when it comes to the lenses we shoot on that you can be easily forgiven for feeling overwhelmed and a little lost when it comes to adding a new one to your camara kit. Let me simplify it all for you so you don’t go splashing a heap of cash on something that doesn’t quite capture your world the way you were envisioning. 1. FOCAL LENGTH – this would be the most important feature to consider. This is how much of the scene In front of you your lens can view and is measured in mm. Wide angle lens (10-20mm) will take a wider shot and take in more of your scene. Portrait lenses (30-80mm) are great for everyday shooting and portraits Zoom lenses (100-300mm) are the bomb when it comes to livestock, sport and shooting things kinda far away that you don’t want to disturb. Ultra Zoom (300mm+) is for the nature enthusiast – think African safaris and bird photography. 2. PRIME OR ZOOM – this determines whether you have one single focal length (eg. 30mm) or a range of focal lengths in one lens (24-70mm). Starting out, it is great to have a lens with a bit of range so you can discover what you like shooting! 3. BRAND – much of a muchness really and you can choose to be loyal to the brand of your camera and purchase a genuine lens. Or, there are so many non genuine lenses that are go a bit easier on your hip pocket like Sigma, Tonkina etc 4. F STOP – Consider if you will be shooting in low light or if you want to bring in a heap of intentional / background blur into your image. The lower f stop capability your lens has, the more of this you will get and the bigger your price tag will be. F2.8 wide and portraits lenses are a dream, however you can gt away with f4 Zoom lenses 5. BUDGET – fancy camera gear does not a photographer make. Budget will always come into account and the more mullah you hand over won’t automatically make you a better photographer. Sometimes, a photo comes from desperation! We were hanging out with some interesting birds on the Chobe River in Botswana, Africa and there was a large hippo sleeping nearby. We shot for awhile and I was using a 600mm (again, birds), not really thinking of the hippo since his back was to us and he was slumbering peacefully - well, as peaceful as a hippo gets. Then, something startled him and we heard a commotion as he rose. No time to change lenses - or even grab another camera with a shorter lens - so I decided to make it work with the 600mm. I wasn't so sure at first but when I saw him in the viewfinder I knew I had a very intimidating shot. That's the thing - so often people ask me about which lens is "right" for a particular subject, but the thing is, you can often make a variety of photos of any subject with any lens. This time, my mismatched gloves are intentional. Look close. Tripod hand is in a glove covered with a mitt. Camera hand is in a glove not covered with a mitt. This is a strategic. I need quick access to camera buttons even on extreme cold days so fingered glove goes on cam hand (right). I pocket that hand to help warm it when I’m not hauling or pushing buttons. I’m actually left handed but video cams are built for righties so I’m trained to the right. On this day, it was -12 temp with wind. I was learning/trying to record sage grouse behavior in winter. 🥶. They were sketchy and I was super cold so not a stellar day. However, my favorite thing about this pix is #myson took it.
