Choosing your main profile photo can be tricky. After a photoshoot, you’ll find yourself with a bunch of great photos, but there’s always one that stands out as the perfect main profile picture. You know, the one that becomes your signature, the image your followers and friends immediately recognize without even realizing it. It can feel like quite a commitment. Changing your main profile picture frequently isn’t ideal. It can confuse followers and waste valuable time. Here’s a trick I use with my 8 year old daughter that I’m sure you’ve heard of before, but maybe didn’t consider in this context. She’s in third grade and cares quite a bit about what she wears to school. She often has a hard time making a decision either about which shirt or hair clips or even which socks to wear. This is where my trick comes in. I take the two options in question and hide them behind my back, then have her blindly choose. When I reveal her choice, she’s usually either thrilled or slightly disappointed, rarely indifferent. She knows what she wants, but sometimes that decisiveness gets clouded in the moment. Sound familiar? I wrote a book, so I could now use this picture for the cover page. It’s unbelievable, but my book was published five years ago and has been read by thousands of people since then. Sometimes when lighting situations are not optimal underwater, have your model wear silver or anything reflective. If your camera can’t auto focus by picking up any atmospheric light surrounding the subject and therefore won’t trigger the strobe lights well, turn on the pool lights or have one of your assistants shine a pocket light on your subject from outside the pool, or a hot light on a stand so your camera can focus on detail and trigger the strobes more effectively. Let's talk about finding compositions in the dark - this is for you sunrise lovers - it can be a challenge. Clearly it would be ideal if you've been able to scout the location beforehand, but this is not always possible. Running around with a torch or headlamp can be a really good way to instantly get in the bad books of any other photographers that are there. This is where using your phone or camera with the ISO turned right up can be really handy. It may sound obvious, but I'd never done this with my camera until a couple of years ago, and it truly was a game changer. Just don't forget to reset it when you do actually set up! A Wednesday Wisdom tip from Aubrey Tseleng. Leopards are well known for their elusive nature, spending most of the daytime slumbering in thickets only to become active in the dark.
