Santarcangelo di Romagna Arrived Friday at 4pm when the whole town seemed to be out getting ice cream after school. A very convenient but random stop of for us on our way back up the country towards Verona and the lakes. So random that when one local hears me try to order the ice cream in Italian he said English? To which I replied Scottish. He then said why are you here?, why not I replied. But why here? We hadn't been into the town yet so I did wonder what we'd done. After a enjoying yet more ice-cream, and grabbing a couple of pizza slices we had a wonder around and it was lovely. A really really pretty little town with lots of gorgeous cafes and boutiquey little shops. Boring motorhome post. We haven't done much motorhoming in the UK so we haven't looked into the village parking spots that are specifically for motorhomes, Sostas they are called in Italy or Aires in France. But Italy is amazing for them. We choose where we stay quite carefully as we do have young kids and the dog and do feel quite vulnerable sometimes. Therefore we tend to go for homestays or somewhere with basic security like in Alberobello. Looking at all the apps there seems to be a lot of Sostas across Italy we've parked at a few when wondering into a town but last night we stayed at our first unmanned Sosta that had shower and toilet facilities. I'm sure they are not all as well maintained like this but it still blows my mind places like this even exist for motorhomers. We were 10mins walk to a pretty town and 5mins from the motorway. For 16€ which I guess is quite hefty for parking you can access the spot, fill up and empty and then use the toilets and pay an extra 1€ for a really good and clean shower. A super well maintained campsite in Garganno, the spur of Italy. A huge and very hilly (surprise surprise) national park sort of area with a lot of campsites to choose from. This site was right on the beach, it looked like it had a relatively sheltered little beach, not too far from a town and we found a voucher to save us some £££. The restaurants on the beach weren't open yet but that wasn't a problem for us. The kiddies didn't care that it was a bit windy a few days which made it a tad too cold for a swim despite it being very hot in general and loved playing the shallow waters. We went for a cycle to some caves, played on the rocks and of course Lorelei enjoyed making a few more friends. Heading north now up towards Verona, then onto one of the lakes before we head home 😭. 7 days left. Vieste The map said it was only 5km but after the drive past it to the campsite up and down the hills and seeing it in the distance for a few days it seemed a lot further. But we got ourselves organized and decided to give it a go even if we had to push the bikes up the hills. It was a little hilly town, with lots of steps not quite suitable for the bike. Can't get over how hilly everywhere is! It was lovely and we enjoyed a wee cycle around, picked up some supplies had a delicious lunch of lots of local dishes. Grilled seabass, stuffed muscles, whole slab of grilled cheese with honey, spaghetti vongole, fresh pasta & tomatoes. So pleased it wasn't busy as the little man would not sit still and wasn't quite the relaxed lunch we'd planned. Alberobello After the 1ltr of wine and shots at dinner the night before I wasn't feeling entirely fresh yesterday morning. We then had an agonising 40minute drive with the fuel light on trying to find somewhere fill up. Does anyone else panic as much as I do when the light comes on? I had visions of me having to cycle up and down the hills with a jerry can trying to find some diesel. After we were fuelled and I could relax a bit the beautiful scenery and roads on the way to Alberobello kept me busy and distracted me from my ropey head. We finally arrived at another amazingly located "campsite" or Sosta so we could explore the picture perfect Alberobello. We're pretty far south now and enjoying the warmer weather. Alberobello was quite touristy again but I can see why, as it was so pretty. These little trulli houses are gorgeous. We've seen them dotted all around the countryside. We enjoyed a few drinks in the centre, another delicious ice-cream and a wonder around. Eli decided he didn't want to nap in the pram, obviously too impressed with houses as much as we were so had an early bed then decided to sleep and incredible 13hrs! Thank you baby boy. All feeling refreshed today! Castelmezzano There are so many places in Italy that I want to go to and after planning our route and looking for places to stay the number probably trebled. Castelmezzano and Piertraposa were not on my list originally but looking at places to potentially stop at as we went from west to east they popped up and after reading about them they were added to the list. Luckily there was also an agro tourism place with great reviews that came up on Park4night not too far either. Well I say not too far, it was still quite a drive up and down the winedy hills. The setting was stunning, we were welcome with an espresso and home made pie and biscuits, the dinner was yummy, the food just kept coming but we had no idea what it was going to be and Lorelei had a little friend to run around with while we ate so apart from what seemed like a slightly inflated price tag for it all it was great. A walk up a big hill the next day avoiding some big dogs and we were off again. This central part of Italy has been stunning and the drive to our next stop was just gorgeous. Sorrento, this campsite and the last few days, AMAZING . So very touristy but absolutely gorgeous. The weather was perfect, the scenery was incredible, the campsite & facilities were top and the ice-cream was delicious. I've said it many times but travelling with the clan is a lot sometimes, but we're so lucky to be doing this on my maternity leave. One big upside of taking our doggy is that we have to explore, he needs his walks and we try to find places that he can explore as much as possible. It's a family holiday and he's part of our family so it's just as important that he's enjoying himself too. Depending on where we are and how we're feeling we'll walk with or without the kiddies. But the times without the wee ones, an hour in the morning or evening just me and the doggy is really needed some days, our kids are brilliant but they are intense. Sometimes we find amazing trails that take us to places we definitely wouldn't have explored without him, other times it's just a walk through the town just through two of us a little faster than normal and other times it's a total fail walking along busy roads in attempts to find somewhere more suitable. Last week we had a walking fail, 20mins along a busy road in attempts to find this trail I'd seen which was infact just an incredibly steep road between houses. I don't know how Italians live in some of these places. There were some nice views but wasn't what I'd hoped. In Sorrento we had a bit of everything. A lovely walk into town, Bernie scoffing all the dropped pizza crusts and ice-cream, a short hike up a hill to try catch the sunset and a longer walk both along a busy road, up and down some back street trails and finally finding a hidden little cove. If we hadn't have been limited on time this morning packing up to move on I definitely would have taken a dip as it looked glorious. One post for two and half days in Sorrento is not going to be enough to capture how amazing even just the last day and a half have been. Today was our baby boys first birthday and it was such an incredible day. Of course he'll never remember it but I can remind him for years to come what a special day it was for all of us. After a morning of presents, and a walk with Bernie to suss out the boats we had lunch in the smaller harbour below our campsite with views of Vesuvius to fill our bellies before taking a boat trip down the Amalfi coast. It has been a dream of mine to come here and with the littles, the dog and the motorhome this was the most perfect way for us to make this trip. I would 100% love to come back and wonder the streets of Positano and Amalfi stopping for a few apperols along the way. The weather, the very strong Lemoncello spritz at lunch and the fact that it wasn't too busy has definitely helped but the coastline was just as gorgeous as I'd imaged. After a lot driving and stop starts we had 4 days by the beach to unwind a bit and celebrate Lorelei's 4th birthday. We were meant to spend it in Sorrento but the campsite was full so a quick rejig of the plans and all worked out perfectly. The drive towards this campsite along a huge straight strip following the beach didn't fill me with promise, but the further we drove the nicer it became. The check in process however, was absolute chaos. I don't expect people to speak English but I do expect the people running the campsite to know and tell us where the services for filling up and emptying the motorhome are, the cost per night and how we choose a pitch. After 3 guys talking at me repeatedly in Italian, making no sense to me and interrupting any time I tried to ask questions via Google translate they finally produced a map of the site which they seemed like they had never seen before. We were guided to a pitch after being told we could choose any, but not this one, this area is closed these are not available etc etc etc. We finally settled down, the site was busy with Italians enjoying the long weekend and Lorelei made friends within 5 minutes with two kids opposite us. The site did need a bit of TLC but it had a park on a massive sandy beach, there was an equally chaotic pizzeria on site, it was 5mins walk to a fresh pasta shop, mini market and mini golf and a 10minute cycle to some historical sites and pretty wee town. So all in all it suited us quite well. We had a lovely few days celebrating Lorelei's birthday, watching her run around with her new friends and tell every other person it was going to be, it was or it had been her birthday. After the haze that we arrived in cleared we got to see the views and were treated to a few gorgeous sunsets. The first of our celebrations this week for our little ladies 4th birthday couldn't have been more Italian if we tried. Presents, a cycle for some Gelato and to see some Roman ruins, a trip to the shop for some fresh pasta, presents from her new camping friends and a few other people that's she's been charming on the campsite the last few days and a chaotic but very local dinner. Fattoria Maionchi A family run vineyard that has been in the family since the 16th century, with buildings dating to the 12th. It's gone through various highs and lows with each generation. Two young cousins are now working to bring this beautiful place back to it's former glory. Their grandmother had the vision to turn it into a bustling hotel, restaurant and vineyard but when she died her children didn't have the capacity to keep it going. In 2019 two of her grandchildren began the restoration, not the best time to start a new business but as they said they have the enthusiasm and positive attitude. Francesco was lovely and so patient with our little ones while he talked through everything that goes on here, the family history and what they have planned for the future. As we've been driving about and looking at the maps I've realised there are so many places in Tuscany that I would like to visit. I'm already planning our next trip! Rather than spend more time up here with the cooler unpredictable weather we are beasting it south today. It's been strangely misty the last few days. But even with the mist the countryside is beautiful. I've saved the following spots for another trip - Montepluciano, Sienna, Orvieto, San Gargianno, Montefollnico, Pienza and the smaller roads of Valle O'rcia. Because plans changed we had an unscheduled visit to a lovely little town called Lucca that was 4km from the first farm we stayed at. We zoomed about on our bikes, had an ice-cream and picked up a new inner tube as we realised one of them had a slow puncture which isn't ideal. We've been on the road a week. So far we've stayed at 3 vineyards and two campsites. Visited 6 towns, been on busses, trains, ferrys and bikes, been drenched, hailed on, blown away, experienced our first thunderstorm and warmed by the sun. We've also had to change our plans 3times, so it's fair to say this last week has been quite busy! Very few campsites have taken our bookings when we contacted them saying they have space, don't worry. Therefore, when I contacted the site in Sorrento for tomorrow to confirm availability I was more than a little disappointed that they said they didn't have space!!! It's our daughter's 4th birthday on Monday and Easter Sunday so have planned a few things to make them special. So we're now having to rearrange our plans once again! We think we have it covered but what an extra faf! Really looking forward to 4days in once place to relax a bit more, get the BBQ out and give the kids a bit more freedom. Stayed at a very small vineyard and olive oil producers in Tuscany last night and enjoyed a breakfast in their gorgeous dining room this morning. We waited it out, got dressed up in the wet weather gear and were rewarded with some sunshine! Cinque Terre, 5 lands connected by a walking trail, boats or a train in a national park. We were realistic and given the weather and the crew planned 3 at most and made it to two. Vernazza and Riomaggiore. Maybe would have made it to 3 if we hadn't been impatient and jumped on the wrong train, sped past our stop and had to wait 30mins at the end of the line for another train back 🤦🏼♀️ #fail It was cloudy in Vernazza yet so charming and glad we chose it as one of the stops. We grabbed some pizza and Lorelei opted for a poke of fried fish. In the sunshine it would be 👌🏼 The sun (and wind) suddenly came out when we stepped of the train in Riomaggiore. One steep road up and down to a tiny harbour. One restaurant had tables placed in a few wee romantic nooks in the rocks near the harbour which I would 100% recommend if you weren't here with a dog who steals your last bit of pizza or the kiddies who are desperate for the ice cream you promised 3hrs ago. For anyone whose here without little legs or stronger than us to carry them the distance, the trail between the towns would be incredible if you had all day to take your time stoping for a few glasses of vino and bites of pizza as you go. Lucky we arrived a day ahead of schedule as it was gorgeous blue skies for our first outing and rain is forecast for the next 4days! We've read that it's definitely not worth trying to drive some of the roads along the west coast of Italy so we've planned a few campsites where we can bus, train or boat to the places we'd like to visit. First up was Portofino! The campsite in Rapallo not far from Portofino isn't the most fabulous of sites or situations but the staff have been lovely and it's location for the bus and a walk into town were ideal. With some help to download the bus app to buy tickets, a bit of a wait and three busses there and two busses back we spent a lovely few hours wondering Portofino, had our first Gelato and grabbed some lunch before squeezing back on the bus. Can't actually imagine how busy it would be here in peak season. As we are travelling with littles and we made the wise decision to leave Bernie in the motorhome our time was a little limited. There's definitely a bit more to explore in the little town but what we did see I loved! It really was very pretty and is making me even more excited about all the other places we have planned over the next few weeks. We've covered some miles, 3400 and counting! I've been to Spain before, a golf resort near Marbella, a couple of days somewhere near Murcia and a few of the Canaries and Balearic islands but I didn't feel like I'd seen Spain or new much about it's cities or landscape. Unlike other trips I really didn't know what I wanted to see or do on this one, our only plan was to head south to the coast and try find some sunshine. We managed that but it was complicated! Still amazed by how busy the sites were that were open, full of retired Europeans flocking to the sunshine for the winter months. I lost count of the number of sites that I called who said they were full until end of Feb & March! But those little glitches meant we sought out other places and I'm so happy we did other wise we wouldnt have gone to Juenta de la Fontera, Cabo de Gato national Park or even contemplated going to Seville which then meant we drove home through Spain and it's gorgeous countryside. Some of the roads and routes we took were stunning, the mountains and the greenery really took me by surprise as well as the contrast as we made our way from the south through the center of the country north again. There are so many pretty little towns and Castles, the number of castles is insane and impressive churches or monasteries everywhere! I've put so many markers on my maps for future trips as I looked up all the places we drove past or through. Now I know what to expect and how to plan we'll definitely be back to Spain in the motorhome. Our last day in Spain and last few days of this holiday. Since leaving Spain and travelling up through France we've been reminded why we chose Spain and the south for this February trip. The rain and cold make travelling in a motorhome very different with the littles and a dog so we're even more appreciative of the sun we had the last few weeks. Our last night in Spain we parked outside a cider house, not in it as our Espana discovery book and app was wrong again but it was a pleasant spot on the road by a little stream. The last three nights as we made our way up through France we stopped at a vineyard that welcomed us with open arms and a wee taster while the kiddies played then a campsite for two nights with indoor pool and great little play park to give L a bit of a rest from the relentless driving. I went for a much needed run around some wetlands near the campsite and took some time to think about the last few weeks. As we make our way to the ferry I'm already planning our trip to Italy as we have once again learnt so much from this trip. We've now realized how lucky we'd been with France, Norway and Wales and not planning too much ahead and still landing on our feet.
