Music is huge part of my cancer fighting routine. I always listen to music while at chemo and it makes everything go faster. Headphones also shield me from overhearing patient conversations. I don’t listen to anything even close to poignant. Slow sad songs do not help. Because of this I listen to bands who don’t do poignant. @amylandthesniffers led me to @bobbyvylan at their show in Boston. @winelipsband led me to @badbadnerves and I’m seeing them both tomorrow @nofunonline! Katie is my regular bartender at the weirdest bar in the world, The Infusion Lounge. Katie’s been my bartender for the past six months and she helps make chemo more fun. We have a bunch of bits that happen every visit: confirming my name and date of birth , “My name is May and I was born on the 30th of Joe…”. Sometimes my answer is so fragmented I’m not sure if I hit everything. When Katie shows up with new cocktails (IV bags fulla meds) there’s a bunch of bits. “Extra salt on the rim?” I’m in my third year of being a regular, twice a month, and I think adding as much whimsy and humor to the process helps. And Katie is down for the whimsy! With headphones at a ridiculous volume and a laptop in front of me, the 4 hours and change at the hospital fly right by! Hello from Camp Chemo! It snowed in April in Albany today. I was genuinely surprised when I looked out the window this morning. When you expect spring to be outside and instead there’s a couple inches of snow, your brain gets bent. I’ve been doing a little reminiscing lately, remembering good stuff. Sometimes when I’m running a familiar memory through my head I find additional details I hadn’t remembered before. The little bubble I live inside of since I got cancer is free of news and because I can’t feel my hands and feet, I can’t work. That opens up a lot of brain space and it also keeps my stress and blood pressure low. That extra brain space is perhaps why I’ve been able to delve further into memories. That’s my theory. Good morning from the grow room! No April fools jokes on this account! They can get a little exhausting/predictable. I like big leaves and I cannot lie, I’ll clip the eff out of them for blocking all that light! I have more defoliation in my future. The 2x4 is so out of hand, one plant grew into the light! I’m a bad grower when I can’t get in here every day. I’ve asked for a little more help from my wife keeping the reservoir full, it was empty when I got in there yesterday. Caught it before the plants needed more water and then I walked over 15 gallons of water into the room, 1 gallon at a time. The reservoir is 12 gallons and it waters 10 plants, soon to be 15 plants. 4 more in the 3x3 and I’m going to hook up a mom plant to it. The extra three gallons were added over the course of a few hours. The plants and lines were sucking up water fast! There’s still 20 plus teen plants in pots that need watering by hand, which is why I gotta cut back on my cloning routine. Don’t have the real estate for a whole lot more plants. But I also don’t have the budget for seeds, so I just gotta be choosey with the cloning, which is hard with five new cultivars in two tents at the moment. All in veg and most in need of cloning. Another thing you need to do to clone, be in the grow room EVERY DAY. I’ve killed a bunch of them. Cut more yesterday. If this next round of clones doesn’t make it, then so be it. I gotta flip to flower as my jar count is scary low and chemo is on deck. #chemo #cancerschmancer #canna

2,850 hours of chemo. WOW. That’s a lotta time. What’s cool/amazing is that chemo has less side effects than it did when I started and as odd as it sounds, I’m really used to it. I am super lucky. For whatever reason the drugs I get pumped with every month are working and, so far, my body’s been able to take it. The fatigue and enormous amount of sleep is one side effect and it’s part of the reason I can bounce back and function faster. I just need to lose the time to sleep. My hands and feet are numb and not comfortably so. Each round makes that a little worse but I’m still here and I’ve got a cane! In terms of side effects, I couldn’t be much luckier because that’s it! I can beat the nausea back with meds. Coming out of the fog of chemo to a long to do list and a whole lotta comments to answer! I have been more asleep than awake since getting unplugged from my chemo to go pump on Saturday. Still feel like I’m landing after a little time traveling. Waking up to plans I started before chemo and feeling a little behind. I’ll catch up eventually. I’ve lost track of how many hours of chemo I’ve had. I could do the math but my brain is enjoying the lack of answer at the moment. I’ve got plans through September and ideas I haven’t started yet. I think that’s what’s keeping me alive, ideas and plans. Been lucky to have had a bunch of ideas become reality. Some ideas are in a holding pattern as my bandwidth is a little narrow to juggle them. One idea that turned into a plan is awaiting a part to fall into place. What was cool is that as the coffee hit my brain this morning, I came across another idea that would make waiting for parts to fall in place potentially pointless. “Improvise, adapt and overcome” Always been a fan of that quote. Another part of overcoming is accepting. Since December, 2021 when I was diagnosed with cancer I’ve been doing a lot of that quote. The things I can’t overcome I’ve got to accept. It’s not defeat, it’s reality. I’ve never been less independent in my life but I try to not let that get to me. I’m lucky to be here. One nurse recently described my case as being “extraordinary.” Most people who have what I have don’t live as long as I’m living. Like, usually 9 months. They gave me 15 months. This is month 27. Is Guinness and pizza the cure for cancer? I don’t know, probably not, but I will continue having both and enjoying it and life! Go feel lucky about something in your life. NO MATTER WHAT there is one thing you feel lucky about, perhaps two or three. But no pressure! #cancer #cancerschmancer #livinginovertime #livingindoubleovertime

I am lucky to have so many super supportive online neighbors and pals. I feel less stress because I know I can pay the bills and maybe that’s another reason I’m still here. Two doctors gave me 15 months to live with stage 4 pancreatic cancer that has spread to my liver and lungs. The cancer is still there but it’s not moving! We are having a staring contest and nobody’s blinking. One of the doctors said that chemo works until the cancer figures out what’s going and finds another way to get ya. I have dumb cancer. Status update: CT scan results are good. Trouble spots keep on shrinking, so we continue with treatment, which makes this round 20 with the bagged sauce. CT scan did also show a couple of spots on my back, so MRI has been scheduled to take a look-see.
