For all you flyer designers out there, I was going through my phone and found some flyers from back around the late 90s/early 00s. These were all made by Airline Industries, based in #WashingtonDC, for the #iconic Friday nights at the #CapitalBallroom that were called Buzz/Sting (depending on the timeframe). The Capital Ballroom was a megaclub in a very large, old train station that pulled every raver from Virginia to DC to Maryland, and beyond, as well as the world's top talent like @donaldglaude (who just happens to be playing at @genesis_lake_jam this week, YAY!). Finding those flyers stuffed in our windshield wipers, all over the ground in the parking lot outside, at the record stores, and in a stack of similar flyers in just about every raver's home was as much a treat as the party itself. The design elements, layout, the detail, the depth, the tasteful font and color choices are truly masterful #graphicdesign work. Take a look at those flyers and tell me they aren't some of the best you've ever seen and they are like 20-30 years old and still cool AF! The amount of incredible, homegrown Canadian talent we have in our scene never ceases to amaze me. Tons of original music and masterful mixing was brought to the stage by each artist. 2023 Year in Review: @cybertronicband performed at @capitalballrm in Victoria in September. This was a show that was originally scheduled for April 2020. We all know what happened during that time. The show was rescheduled 3 times. This is a band that would be a perfect fit for Capital City Comic Con. It's a band cosplaying as Transformers from the 1980s playing songs from the Transformers movie soundtrack and originals inspired by it. Besides the elaborate costumes, a reason these photos are among my favourites is because of the backlighting complementing the colours of the costumes really well. Also, I never thought I'd be taking photos of Unicron shredding a guitar solo along with Hot Rod, Arcee, Shockwave, Rumble and a Quinteson judge. 2023 Year in Review: @grandson performed a sold out show at @capitalballrm in August. There were so many photo worthy moments during his set. He had a park bench and street lamps on stage (he later raffled off the lamps) where he started the set sitting and crying. He staged dived from the second level and crowd surfed. And he gave a shirt to a superfan who attended her 100th grandson show. But these two moments are my favourites. Whenever an artist goes into the audience you either have to luck out by being in the right spot at the right time or fight your way through the audience to get as close to them as you can. Then you have to hope there's enough light to get halfway decent shots. Lighting for this moment was no problem since grandson had the audience turn on the phone lights. The other shot is one of those moments you hope to get when you have your wide angle lens on. 2023 Year in Review: @monowhales is a band that is always fun to shoot. Sally is always full of energy on stage making for great photo moments both on her own and interacting with her bandmates. They opened for grandson in early August at a sold out show at @capitalballrm . They returned for their own headlining show at Wicket Hall in November, but sadly I had to miss it due to my day job. I liked the colour shot because of how the lights were at just the right angle pointing at bassist Dylan Burrett and at Sally and how Sally's hair seems to be in mid movement.
