One of things I always encourage my clients to do when booking a trip with me is to get an extra pair of hands with you on vacation! You don't nessisarly need to have a child with a disability to use this service, but it's targeted at families with a child or adult with a disability. I work with @breakrelief_sitters on vacations with families to make them my ears on the ground helping to support my clients, because I can't physically be with my clients during their trips. I trust @breakrelief_sitters with my clients to be supporting and caring nannys and respite care providers to them. One of the best things about their service is you'll meet with the nanny or respite care provider before you vacation either via a video call. This way your family can establish a report with your nanny or respite care provider before the trip and really get to know them It's also nice because you'll have someone else to capture some really memorable family moments! Have you hired a nanny or a respite care provider on vacation? Tell me how it went in the comments! #vacationnanny #nannyonvacation #noshamewithananny #hireananny #caregiversupport #caregiveronvacation #caregier #respitecare #respitecareprovider #respitecareonvacation #travelingrespitecareprovider #autismtravel #autismtravelpro #certifiedautismtravelprofessional #certifiedautismtravelpro #autismtravelagent #autismtravelconsultant #autismtravelguide

Yesterday I was looking around and thought to myself, "What am I doing with all this stuff?" We have been downsizing over the last few years, but it is never easy to part with the memories associated with the stuff. The reality is that the memories live on in your heart, not your possessions. Making new memories requires you to have freedom, and taking care of stuff ties you down. The other day a friend shared the story of someone she knows who had lost their home in a fire. I know it was a tragedy, but they quickly found photos and the items that could not be replaced and got out safely. What matters is they are safe. So as I look around my house, I ask myself this question, "Do I need that?" And the sooner you decide for yourself, the better. It is so freeing. "You don't have to face every skeleton in your closet before you can make some room in there!"- Carmen Klassen.

You want me to do what? Eleanor was dreading the next few minutes. As she expected, her only son arrived from San Diego and burst through the door of her hospital room. Pale and drenched in sweat, Patrick said, "Mom, are you ok? I got here as soon as I heard the news." Elenor lived in Orange, California, a bustling suburb of Los Angeles. She had no intention of moving even though she knew her son had been planning the move for some time. Suffering a stroke was just the excuse he needed to sell her house and move her to San Diego. What then, her life as she knew it would be over. As Eleanor expected, he approached her about the move the next day. She was adamant about staying home and upset at the timing of the conversation. In his mind, there was no better time to have this chat. Why was his mom so stubborn? Didn't she see that she was more vulnerable? Wouldn't her life be more fulfilled living with her family? They were at a crossroads. The conversation would have to be tabled for now. These were life-altering decisions, and Patrick knew he needed to back off. Looking back, he wished they had spoken about his plans to have her move in with his family earlier. In his mind, it was a brilliant plan. He could not imagine why his mom would object to having the extra help and the bonus of spending time with her grandkids. What he did not plan on was her unwillingness to give up her life. "Your assumptions are your windows on the world. Scrub them off every once in a while, or the light won't come in." - Isaac Asimov.

Shingles cause a painful rash that might appear on your face or body. Individuals that have had chickenpox have the varicella-zoster virus lying inactive in their nerve tissue. Many years later, the virus may reappear as shingles. There is no cure for shingles, but treatment may relieve pain from the virus. Below are a few ways to treat shingles. Be sure to consult your doctor on the best course of action. 1. Run a clean washcloth under cool water and place it on the affected areas to relieve irritation 2. Utilize creams or lotions to relieve symptoms such as pain and itchiness 3. Ask your doctor about antiviral medications that may help the rash heal more quickly #homecare #seniorcare #shingles #healthcare #caregivingtips #caregier #rash #skintips #skinhealth #healthtips

Did you know it's #socialworkerweek2021 , which is part of March's #SocialWorkerMonth ? At AS York, we have a team of 23 social workers, who talk to people impacted by dementia daily - over the phone, via email and through support groups, among other programs and services. We wanted to take a moment to say thank you to our social workers for the incredible work they do to help people on the dementia journey, a journey made even more difficult by COVID-19. Thank you for sharing your wisdom, kindness and support. We know you are making a difference. Have you used the services of an AS York social worker? If you have a message, feel free to comment and we'll pass it along to the team. #SocialWorkers #socialworkersrock #SocialWorkerStrong #alzheimers #dementia #caregier #caregiversupport

While Dementia ain't never done us any favors, as of late it's not throwing many punches either (well, not counting all that blood last weekend). While Mom won't be taking home the crown in a Miss Congeniality contest anytime soon, she has been mostly content with her world and those of us in it. With a few exceptions... * Bored with our usual treks in the Willamette Valley, I decided to cross the Columbia River and venture into eastern Washington to see what there is to see. We stopped at Beacon Rock State Park, where I discovered a paved ADA trail through the luscious forest and golden meadows of the park. Woot! Out came the wheelchair in which I unceremoniously plopped Mom into for the 1-mile loop, certain she would be delighted with the splendors of nature. * Uh. Nope. * She didn't want to sit in the chair. She threw her sunglasses into the brush in anger. She mumbled dementia expletives (you know the ones where you can't identify their words but are quite certain the intent is a whole lot of damnation). * Towards the end of loop she seemed to forget how much she hated it, and even smiled as Mr. Bones wagged his tail in front of her. But by the time we got back to the van she had soured on Mother Nature, and Eldest Daughter, all over again. * Too bad for her. I got a great workout pushing that old broad into a tizzy in such a beautiful setting. We'll be back, Beacon Rock!
