Today's drop-in session at Parliament House with Dementia Australia, co-hosted by MPs @erin_thompson_mp and @penny_pratt_frome offered a profound glimpse into the world of dementia. Through virtual reality, I experienced the daily challenges faced by those living with dementia via the 'Enabling Edie' program. This technology is regularly used by architects and businesses to help create dementia-friendly spaces and simple yet impactful design choices. Engaging with an AI simulation to encourage showering was another confronting reminder of the heartbreaking realities of dementia for both individuals and their loved ones. Dementia is a devastating disease. MEET DAVE: Dave is one of the fundraisers taking part in our 50 Miles in May event. After day one he’s 2.983 miles down already! WHY AGE UK PLYMOUTH? I am a volunteer at Age UK Plymouth and will be walking 50 miles during the month of May to raise money so that Age UK Plymouth can continue to care for and work with people over 50 in and around the City of Plymouth, those living with Dementia and their carers, to improve their quality of life through the promotion of choice, opportunity and independence. WHY 50 Miles in May? I am hoping to walk around a mile a day or more by walking across the Tamar bridge or other flat roads. This will help with my own health condition. Story by @mysdeanajordan 💜The last photo I have with my mom was taken on my birthday - 10 days before she passed away. In true birthday fashion we stayed up until 4am.. but in this case it was as I had every other night for the past 3 months. Spending the night trying desperately to calm her terminal agitation.. administering morphine & THC, rubbing her back, playing calm music and doing everything in my power to make her comfortable. Even though I would never want her to be suffering again I would do it all over and over for her.. None of this feels real, the past few months, the past week.. what the future will be now.. none of it. And tomorrow we will celebrate the life she had before Alzheimer’s.. unfortunately with only a limited number of people who we can’t hug but somehow have to comfort each other through this tremendous loss.. DREAMING OF HER LATE HUSBAND Pauline told me that a lovely lady took her to see her husband's grave yesterday and that he has a beautiful black marble headstone with gold writing and that she will be buried besides him or he said he will "haunt her". We found this quite funny. She told me she dreams about him every night. I told her that was lovely and that he was still with her in spirit. 貓房子 (The Cat House) by 顏志豪 and @huiyin_hsueh is a gentle story that touches on dementia, grieving of loved ones, and acceptance of losses. Old Grannie hated cats. But because Grannie was old, she didn’t see that cats had found refuge and are all over her house. One day, Grannie didn’t come home and her cats began looking for her. They found out that Grannie was confused and couldn’t find her way back. So her cats started taking care of Grannie. Eventually, Grannie forgot that she hated cats, or Grandpa was in a car accident while feeding cats. She only remembered that Grandpa loved cats. And now she understood why. The Cat House, published in Taiwan, was much better written 😅 but I wanted to share this heartwarming tale with you. @yildiraylise also posted a reel on this book. Mark Smith, a sixth-former from Hinchingbrooke School in #Huntingdon #Cambridgeshire, has been visiting Janet, a resident in #Excelcare's #HuntersDown #carehome, for a year-and-a-half. The 90-plus-year-old told the teenage she missed doing things at Easter, now that she is almost bedridden. Mark gave this some thought and organised her a mini Easter chick hunt in her room. The smile is not huge, but it is there. AVOIDING CONFLICT A female #carehome resident wants to borrow something from the arts-and-crafts table. I know that a male resident, sitting at the table, has taken against the borrower from previous experience. He immediately becomes unpleasant. On the previous occasion he had grabbed cups off the table and thrown them at the female resident. So I immediately pack up everything on the table to make sure there is nothing he can use as a weapon. Then I asked my fellow YOPEY Befrienders to lead the female resident away and I will comfort him. DEMENTIA REVELATION I built Lego with the residents – assisting them when needed while making conversation. We spoke about our pets and how we loved animals. I showed one resident a picture of my cat and they told me about theirs called Beatrice.
