Můžete si myslet, že jste ji konečně odnaučili skákat na stůl, protože to už nedělá ve vaší přítomosti. Ovšem spolehněte se, že jakmile za sebou zavřete dveře, ve vteřině bude nahoře. Včera jsme byli na svatbě a při tanci se najednou na dvoře objevila kočka. Chvíli se zkoumavě rozhlížela po hostech, kterých bylo všude okolo víc než dost. A pak si to zcela suverénně zamířila k Lukymu. Většina koček je k cizím lidem nedůvěřivá a nejdříve si vás podezíravě očichá, než se nechá pohladit. Ale tahle ne, prostě přiběhla, vyskočila Lukášovi na klín a hned se tam uvelebila, jako by nic. The dewclaw is a smaller toe located slightly higher up the foot and is similar to human thumbs. These toes are meant for gripping prey and surfaces as they climb up or down and even for grooming. One thing that makes a dewclaw different from the other toes is the fact it isn’t retractable. The other toes retract to minimize wear and tear, but because these aren’t weight-bearing toes that isn’t an issue. Because the dewclaw doesn’t touch the ground and get worn down naturally, it is very important to keep it trimmed. A non-trimmed claw can grow into the pad or skin, cause injury to the cat while grooming or playing, and can also rip or be torn away. I’m sure you can imagine the pain these injuries could induce. A damaged dewclaw needs to be seen by a veterinarian to treat the injury, and possible infection and to manage pain. Dewclaws should NOT be removed unless it is medically necessary. Did you know? Cat Paw Facts - Part 2 Sensitive Paws Those toe beans are so hard to resist, aren't they? Our kitty friends often have a low tolerance for having those beans played with and with good reason. Cats' pads are covered in sensory nerve receptors which make their pads sensitive to touch. These receptors help them feel the temperature, and the texture of any surface they step on, as well as feel any vibration, which works alongside other senses to aid them in hunting their prey. Just like human fingers, cat pads are an important part of their senses and help them navigate the world around them. Stopping them from using their paws even for a second by holding them can make some cats react negatively, either by pulling away, scratching or biting. To be able to care for your cat's claws or aid them in the case of injury, it is important to be able to handle their paws without them having any or very little negative response. To achieve a positive association with you handling their paws, it’s essential to build up their tolerance. You can do this by slowly increasing the number of times you touch their paw and for how long. Be very mindful to pull away before the negative reaction happens. You can distract or reward them with treats so they associate something yummy with having their paws handled. Or like I have been lucky with, touching and trimming our Ellis’s claws while he is asleep. He hated having his claws trimmed so as a kitten in deep sleep was the only way. Now at 2 1/2, we can get one or two paws trimmed up while he’s awake before he says enough.
