I always find it pretty cool when giving an end grain cutting board a dunk in the oil bath to see how some woods are much thirstier than others. Wood is cool 😎 sanding up this end grain cutting board, trying out lumber crayons to track process since they’re easier to see than pencil on darker woods. After the router I started at 40 grit on Rotex mode, before moving onto 60 and 80, then switching to random orbit mode and doing 80 again, then progressing 120, 220, and finally 320, water popping in between each of those. Cleaned up the chaos bricks on the jointer and table saw before gluing up into panels. The plan is to add a walnut border to the multi species board to add some width (I already glued a walnut brick on each end), but then I won’t have enough material for a full size walnut board. That’s fine, though, as there’s no shortage of walnut cutoffs here, so I’ll just add back to it later. Just a little update on this cutting board I made in November, which developed a huge crack across it before I had finished sanding: it’s still going strong! I left the crack side facing up to keep an eye on it (I have feet installed on the bottom face), and not only has the crack not opened, but it seems to have closed even tighter since bringing it in the house and using it. You can barely see it unless you’re looking hard for it. . Some builds from design through to taking the final pictures that you are now seeing, just give so much satisfaction that you don’t want the piece to leave the shop!! and this beautiful kitchen island is one of those projects. The solid mixed timber block that stretches 1.4m x 700mm is certainly the feature of this piece. Love building these tops and seeing the array of colour and grain patterns that emerge from the random’ness of different timber varieties. This block sits on a full Marri frame with its own stunning characteristics. Some of the curl in the grain on the legs is just stunning. This piece also has a single full length drawer and to be honest … i think it’s the largest drawer 🧂🦆 has made!! Loved every moment of bringing this piece to life. 👍👍🧂🦆

When I make cutting boards from Marri I do my best to hand select solid pieces of Marri and avoid using the very gummy, fall apart in your hand pieces of Marri for obvious reasons. In this Marri edge block board the colour and grain patterns that has come through has just blown 🧂🦆 away!!! 😱😱. Curly grain, spalted grain, light pink marri through to washed grey colours … it has it all….. no such thing as a boring piece of Marri!! 👍👍🧂🦆

How about something a little different…black lacquer on some picture frame moulding. A few Xmas presents in the works. First time doing frames and first time using black lacquer. Seemed to work ok, as long as you don’t get too close🔎 . Used emtech EM6600 raven black water based lacquer from @targetcoatings. I’m happy with how it went on and has amazing coverage, first coat was jet black!
