Harold Harvey (1874-1841) was the son of a bank manager who grew up in Penzance and painted the Cornwall he knew. He became a member of the Newlyn School artist's colony and his work shares an affinity with some of his contemporaries such as Laura Knight and Ernest Proctor. Rather wonderfully for us, an exhibition of his work is on until the 28th September 2024 @penleehousegallery in Penzance. I loved the portraits of his wife Gertrude as here, along with his observations of inter war interiors (not completely dissimilar from today) and fashion. Also, his landscapes of flower pickers in fields (not just the farmed daffodils we might associate with Cornwall but also glorious multi coloured anenomies) give you an idea of what early 20th century Cornish farming and landscape might have looked like. With its glamorous Absinthe green shutters, Nuffield Place is an Arts and Crafts house that can fox you slightly as to its country of origin. It was the home until 1963 of the philanthropist and founder of the Morris Motor Company, William Morris, Lord Nuffield, and his wife. They never had children, so the house and its contents remain intact and create a fabulous snapshot of Edwardian to 1950s decoration in the South Oxfordshire countryside. A few years ago, the house made a great backdrop for a vintage Christmas shoot I styled for Marie Claire magazine with photographer @cathgratwicke, so it was interesting to revisit under its now National Trust ownership. The Sargent and Fashion exhibition opens today staged in collaboration between @tatebritainlondon and @mfaboston with a retrospective of the work of John Singer Sargent also reuniting for the first time since they were painted, 5 of the dresses and accessories with his portraits. He was the ultimate stylist (had a prop box of silk white skirt and favourite paisley patterned shawls - as seen in exhibition that got used on more than one portrait) and manipulator of fabric, even commissioning dresses for portraits such as the ones worn by the two little girls in the famous Carnation, Lily, Lily Rose portrait that Tate Britain purchased as soon as Sargent had finished it in 1886. The inspiration for that painting came from a boating expedition to Pangbourne in 1885 when he saw Chinese lanterns hanging in the trees. Will follow this post with that picture to remind you. 18th and 19th Century Hall or groomsman's chairs had these very flat seats, which were never designed to encourage much sitting down either for guests or for servants. But they did create a bit of a theatrical entrance as they were usually paired in symmetry. I can't take my eye off them for the myriad and elaborate carved backs they have, sometimes with armorial designs to reflect a family's status. With their flat seats, they make a perfect bedside table for lamps or cute gothic chambersticks. Cheek by jowal with lawyers from the nearby Inns of Court and journalists from Channel 4 all looking for Regency glass to treasures from sunken ships and Delft, I was guided round the shop by Hilary with I have to say, a very civilising glass of sherry.
