Executed by John Singer Sargent between 1889-1890, this oil-on-canvas named A Lady in White portraits Miss Elise Palmer sitting against the wooden panel in the manor house in Kent called Ightham Mote. His renderings in hyper-realism with intricate layering of colours and brushstrokes not only depicts the mesmerising gaze of a 17-year-old young lady from a wealthy family, he also asks the audience to fixate on her or potentially his sartorial selection that consumes the majority of the space. Bolstered by the chiffon undersleeves and pleated pinkish underskirt, Palmer is topped with a mid-neck bodice that cuts open beneath her elbows and waist. A sash is tied around her waist to develop more gatherings that brings forth her petite body. She is further accessorised with a dangling pendant and a rosy pink shawl resting on her dress. While the sitter’s garment and hairdo might have been seen as unremarkable through our contemporary eyes, they were by no means mainstream in the late 19th century. Palmer is illustrated wearing her hair down with bold short bangs and dressing in a long and full gown, which could be interpreted as contrary as grown women always had their hair up and children would be dolled up with a shorter and less draping dress. Born in 1856, Sargent was brought up by his American parents who expatriated to Europe and had since begun his artistic education in Italy, Germany and Paris where he befriended Claude Monet. Sargent became the pupil of Carolus-Duran and adopted his painterly style. In the period when artists would meticulously draft and plot their paintings, he abandoned the progress of outlining and directly applied paints with a heavily loaded brush. As soon as the tone and shapes are delineated, he would proceed to perfect the silhouette by dabbing more delicate strokes of lighter or darker colours to create highlights and shadows. To achieve such spontaneous delivery, he thus often spent time sketching and familiarising himself with the sitter’s demeanour before he painted directly on the canvas, capturing their features and temperament swiftly and skillfully. Sargent and Fashion is now on view at Tate Britain until 7 July 2024.

These are vanity projects for the sitters and just feel like a nice likeness, but then … so what … the last room however is his ‘own work’, full of stories. Sumptuous depiction of the subtleties and sheen of silk laid against the deep thick pile of velvet, topped with delicate ‘tinsel’ and tissue thin gauzy lace trims. This deep raspberry pink velvet gown was perfection. Like Franz Hals, Sargent was a skilled painter of fabrics, gowns and capes, feathered, frilled or flounced all seem to rustle, sigh and swish. The very texture and feel of the different textiles is rendered to perfection. The colours glow. Captivated by the beautiful aura that radiates from the subject in John Singer Sargent’s portrait, I decided to do a study of this work using acrylics. I loved the warm tones that light the face as well as the long, broad brushstrokes that embrace the sitter, Robert Brough. For me, it suggests an admiration for the man at the centre of this painting. So who was Sargent’s smartly-dressed sitter? Brough was a respected painter and friend of Sargent. Born in 1872, he grew up on the outskirts of Aberdeen, completed an apprenticeship as an engraver and attended evening classes where he studied Art. He won prestigious prizes and trained further in Paris, eventually going back to Aberdeen aged 22 to be a portrait painter. He gained society commissions, further growing his reputation. Brough later set up a studio in London close to that of his friend and mentor, Sargent. In January 1905, Brough was returning to London on an overnight train from Scotland. The train was involved in a crash and a fire broke out. Seven people lost their lives and many were injured; amongst them Robert Brough, who suffered severe burns. Sargent learned of the accident and travelled north to Yorkshire to be at Brough’s bedside. Tragically, shortly following the accident, aged 33, Brough died of his injuries. ——— As I continue to learn about painting portraits, I am grateful for mentoring input from @kieran.ingram . My youngest grandchild was born the night I moved into the house I am now living in...the house where I finally realized my dream of building a studio for myself. And since I use my children and grandchildren to “carbon date” EVERYTHING in my life, I can safely say that I have lived in my house for 10 years (because my spunky, darling, youngest grandson just turned 10!) And, fun fact, his first word was “avocado” or as he pronounced it “ah-buh-caw-doe”. Whoa, a four syllable word right out of the gate!!! But youngest children in families often do scamper to keep up with their older siblings, and he is no exception. So in honor of my grandson’s double digit milestone, I have painted “Avocado, Lily Lily, Orange” (I was channeling John Singer Sargent and his fab painting, “Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose”), because I believe that when someone makes something beautiful, it’s contagious, and it makes others break out in a rash of creativity!!! As I've looked around the National Gallery for nice public domain sketches to complement what I've been thinking about that week, I came upon this one. The inspiration was my focus on "complacency" but with the angle of not taking for granted all you've got going for you. I must have searched for "couple" as one of my terms and this one feels like a mysterious story that needs to be told! I'm struck that although you can't see it well their clothing seems to me like it would be from 50 year into its future. What could they be looking at back there?
