Happy Tannat Day! Traditionally grown in the Madiran region of southwestern France, this varietal is known to have higher acidity and tannins. However, in central Virginia, our hot climate and soils provide us with a much more balanced varietal composition. Due to tannat’s naturally high tannins, we barrel age this wine for 18 months to help the wine evolve and integrate before bottling. Stephanie's Pick from the Tasting Room - My current favorite is the 2020 L'Accord. I'm a rule follower, and I really like how it kind of breaks the rules. You get nice roundness from the Chardonnay while the Aligoté provides nice crispness and tropical notes. It's perfect for summer but has enough body to not be seasonal. Aligoté is also a nice conversation starter since not everyone knows about it. The 2020 L'Accord is available at Wineworks Extended, our Avon St location. Alec's Tasting Room Pick: The 2019 Tannat is my favorite on the current tasting menu. It has notes of bramble, blackberry, leather, and brown spice, with licorice in the finish. As its name would suggest, it has big tannins. It drinks awesome right now and I think it is a wine that will be interesting to watch over a few years to see how it can age and evolve. Alec is our Production Manager, he assists Michael and Michael with the production, scheduling, and planning of our wine as well as our custom crush client's wines.
