To elevate the experience, I reached for the this 2020 Chardonnay from Mt Eden Vineyards in Edna Valley, California. 🍇 Crafted from grapes sourced from the renowned Wolff Vineyard, this vintage marks an impressive milestone—35 consecutive years! The cool oceanic influence of the Edna Valley slows ripening, allowing for the development of rich flavors at lower sugar levels. On the nose sage, and gardenia. On the palate, citrus, pear, and almond flavors, with a lush, round finish. Barrel-fermented and aged on the lees for nine months. And let’s talk about that color—liquid gold! Last week, during its spectacular launch event, Jeff showcased Villiera's latest Cap Classique, Pithos, at the elegant Four Seasons Hotel at the Westcliff. The Cellar Door curated exquisite food pairings to complement Pithos alongside Villiera's Cap Classique range. In 2015, the Grier family of Villiera decided to create something special for release in 2024 to celebrate 40 years of Jeff CWM producing Cap Classique. PITHOS was the result. They had already identified their best block of Chardonnay, and at the pressing stage, only the purest, first portion of the juice to run off was used. It was fermented in a large locally made clay container called a “Pithos”. It was bottled in an iconic bottle and matured on the lees after the 2nd fermentation for an extended period. Rich, creamy, yeasty nose, with a refreshing flavour on the middle palate, developing finesse and complexity on the aftertaste. It is powerful and rich when tasting it now, but it will continue to improve for up to 3 years. This paired wonderfully with the courses consisting of array of finely crafted appetizers, white asparagus and pasta filled with puréed green asparagus, an amazing duck tart and delicious hen.
