Quách Đàm từng là đại phú ở Hong Kong nhưng bị trắng tay trong phút chốc. Với kinh nghiệm trong thương trường ông đã làm lại sự nghiệp ở Chợ Lớn và lần thứ hai trở thành đại phú. Theo tác giả Lý Nhân Phan Thứ Lang (sách Sài Gòn vang bóng), khi mới sang đất Nam Bộ, Quách Đàm mưu sinh bằng nghề buôn bán ve chai khắp các hang cùng ngõ hẻm Sài Gòn - Chợ Lớn, tối đến ngủ dưới mái hiên nhà người. Mua ve chai được ít năm, ông có được số vốn lận lưng mới xoay sang nghề mua da trâu, vi cá và bong bóng cá, nhưng đêm đêm vẫn ngủ nhờ dưới hiên nhà hay trong chợ. Cũng vì có chí và mưu lợi nên Quách Đàm mau lên hơn bất kỳ ai. Nghèo tiền, nhưng giàu kinh nghiệm. Cũng chịu cực, cũng trau chuốt, cũng mềm dẻo từ một tinh thần dày dặn như trước kia, chỉ trong vòng 20 năm ông đã làm lại sự nghiệp và vượt qua đến nỗi đã làm ngạc nhiên nhiều người Âu khi ông có cả chục triệu tiền piastres nhân lên 12 hay 13 lần để chuyển thành tiền franc”. Cuộc đời ông đã để lại di sản lớn nhất là Chợ Bình Tây ở Chợ Lớn. Khi thấy Chợ Lớn cũ quá nhỏ, ông tặng miếng đất rộng hơn cho chính quyền thành phố để xây dựng chợ mới, không đòi bất kỳ khoản tiền nào, chỉ mong được đặt tượng của mình ở đó. . At MKMA Karate the instructors urge you to stay hydrated, so bring your water bottle to class. However, please keep in mind - for your own safety - not to leave the line-up without permission from the instructors. They will let you know, when it’s a good time for a hydration break and when it’s safe for you to leave the line-up. Keep your water bottle close to the wall at all times - just like your shoes - for safety measures. Always attend class wearing your Dobok (uniform) AND belt, so everyone in the Dojang knows, where to line up in comparison to you. Line-ups are always done by grade with the most senior student at the front right and then row for row down to the newest student at the back row. If you are not wearing your belt to class, you line up as a new student. A tidy uniform is a sign of respect. If you are a new student - who has yet to purchase a Dobok - please wear clothes you can comfortably move in (loose jogging bottoms + t shirt). We train in bare feet, so footwear is not needed. Also, no jewellery please, wedding rings must be taped up. The quick checklist for class: * Dobok + Belt * Bong staff (yellow belts and above) * Training knife / Wooden spoon (advanced classes only) * Student Licence Book (pre-grading seminars only) * Student Manual and/or notebook + pen/pencil * Water bottle A note for parents of our Junior Students: A training knife is rarely appropriate for our youngest Juniors, therefore we train with a wooden spoon instead. . You will not be fluent in Korean by joining MKMA Karate but you will learn a few words and phrases (Korean Terminology). The lessons are taught in English but commands are given in Korean. For some it’s easy, for others it’s hard, but as with most things in life: Practice makes perfect! Learning a Martial Art is so much more than being able to defend yourself, it will boost your confidence, and you’ll learn how you learn. Don’t forget, we are all individuals, some learn fast while others learn slow. Some learn best by listening, some learn best by watching, some by reading/writing and some best by doing. For some it’s a combination of two or more. Your student manual can support your learning at home no matter your pace and learning style. Remember to make notes if you find something hard to remember, if you are a visual learner it might help you to draw it or to video film yourself when you practise. If you are a practical learner, then practise practise practise. Ask your fellow students how they remember, you’ll hear some funny stories. . The Bong is the main weapon we train with at MKMA Karate. Many of our students start their Bong training with a wooden snow shovel handle before purchasing a real bamboo (or rattan) bong staff. The length of your Bong staff is approximately the same as your height or slightly shorter. Besides training single techniques, combinations and full forms with the Bong, we also have the Four Directional Bong Form. This form consists of 9 movements in 4 directions, and as you advance through the grades you will be building on this until you know all 36 moves. Both Junior and Main syllabus students will need a Bong to practise towards their orange belt (9th Gup) and onwards. Bongs can be purchased by contacting Master M (just press the “Contact” button in Bio) or catch her before/after your next class. We do not have them on the MKMA Karate webshop. If you are curious on looks and prices, search for “Bo Staffs” on playwell.co.uk . Juniors will normally need a 4” Bong, where teenagers and adults will be using either a 5” Bong or a 6” Bong depending on their height (most use a 5” Bong). . All MKMA Karate students are required to purchase a uniform (dobok). The correct uniform is a black dobok with the MKMA Karate badge embroidered on the front left side. These uniforms are only available from MKMA Karate, and no other uniform may be worn. All grades wear the same black uniform to signify equality. During gradings it is required that the full MKMA uniform is worn. Doboks can be purchased by contacting Master M (just press the “Contact” button in Bio), order it from the MKMA Karate webshop, or catch Master M before/after your next class. MKMA Karate training t-shirts (black and white) are also available to buy separately, and do make a nice substitution to your uniform jacket especially during the summer months. . Our students may occasionally see somebody wearing a grey belt, but what does it mean? The grey belt has been introduced to recognise students, who have previously gained experience in either our own club or other organisations. The belt allows the student to train at their own pace, at a level which they are able, until such time that they feel ready for grading. Whilst wearing the grey belt, students are able to line up where they feel their current standard matches, for example, if they feel they have knowledge suitable for purple belt, they will line up in the purple belt position. In June 2021, MKMA karate joined the BMABA (British Martial Arts and Boxing Association), whose ideas and ethos aligned with our own and allowed the club to demonstrate our commitment to our students even further through the many schemes and awards offered. Since joining, MKMA karate has worked hard to achieve/join the following accolades/schemes through the BMABA: * Club Colours Award – Arguably the highest level of vetting available to UK Martial Arts groups * Grading Integrity Scheme – Demonstrating a commitment to maintaining a robust and fair approach to our belt grading examinations. * Syllabus Licencing – Demonstrating the syllabus we teach is comparable to those across the UK Martial Arts landscape having been reviewed by a panel of independent Martial Artists. . The black student licence book… What is the meaning of it? After a few weeks of training you will be required to take out a full membership, which is renewed annually. This covers your insurance and will enable you to enter gradings. To record your progress, you will receive a black student licence book after your first grading, which will be stamped at every successful grading. Students, who do not have a membership, cannot participate in lessons, or enter into gradings, as they will not be covered under the club insurance. Basically, the black licence book is all your grading certificates in one, so take good care of it. The format of a Student Licence Book is internationally recognised at most Martial Arts clubs. . Belt Spaghetti anyone? Grading day is coming up - and this means new belts… MKMA Karate has two different syllabuses - The Main Syllabus and The Junior Syllabus. The Junior Syllabus is a youth-focussed syllabus making it easier for younger students to advance through the belts without the weight of The Main Syllabus on their shoulders. New students enter The Main Syllabus, if they are above the age of 14, where existing students will remain on The Junior Syllabus after their 14th birthday until they’ve reached Junior Black Belt. No one will be able to grade above Cho Dan Bo in the Main Syllabus, until they’ve turned 16. This is to protect the younger students from the responsibility that comes with being a Dan Grade but also to protect the title of Dan Grade, which requires a maturity you can not possess as a minor. Swipe ➡️ for the full overview of our belt colours. You progress from the initial White Belt to 10th Gup, and then the countdown towards Cho Dan Bo starts. Cho Dan Bo translates to Probationary Black Belt. After Cho Dan Bo we have Junior Black Belt in the Junior Syllabus, and 1st Dan in the Main Syllabus. After 1st Dan your journey through the Dan Grades starts as we now count upwards. The journey through the Dan Grades (the black belts) is a lot slower than the journey through the Gup Grades (the coloured belts). All journeys are individual, and the only true opponent is yourself. So basically “A Black Belt is a White Belt who never gave up!” - and equally important to remember is “Every Black Belt was once a White Belt”. In March 2019 Master M received her qualification of 4th Dan. Her Training & Instruction Genealogy include Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan and Kong Sudo Moo Duk Kwan. Master M specialises in teaching children with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and has a qualification in understanding Autism (ASD). So neurodiversity is not a challenge at MKMA Karate. . On 19 March 2021, MKMA Karate saw the light of day. Our founding Masters had a vision of a club returning to the true roots of martial arts, studying not only fitness and discipline, but also detailed study into technical skills and sparking the internal fire within all their students. Both Master Kindred and Master Martin have been training and teaching many years before the dawn of MKMA Karate. Our Badge encompasses the spirit and origin of our club: The Fist of Justice represents the power and influence of Tang Soo Do on our art. The “Hachiman” (a samurai crest) is a reference to the Okinawan Karate styles, and uses the colours of both the Korean flag and Union Jack. The Blue and Red also represent the Um-Yang (Korean version of Yin-Yang) plus the hard and soft aspects of Karate. The Trigrams are derived from ancient Chinese philosophy and helps the Martial Artists to understand the underlying meanings of the techniques and forms. The Red Background Circle behind the Trigrams represents the Japanese influence on our style. The Midnight Blue Circle represents the Dan Grades (the black belts). In Korean Martial Arts we use Midnight Blue Belts to signify that the wearer has attained Dan Rank, (meaning “a degree holder”). It is used in place of the more common Black Belt. It was beautiful to plant the seed this week of a “Tea Ceremony, Sharing & Chanting” for the women of @freefree.xx and being supported by @bchubchu incredible voice. My reconntion to tea and my chinese female roots started on a friends land in Comporta where then this incredible temple was built to hold ceremonies.
