PIERWSZA KREW... W końcu dotarłem do negatywów (robię gruntowne porządki w archiwum), gdzie znajdują się pierwsze kadry, naświetlone na terenie rozbieranej Koksowni "Walenty" w Rudzie Śląskiej. Jesień 1992 i 12 klatek Ilforda Delta 400. Kamera Nikon F801s oraz obiektywy: AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 oraz AF Nikkor 35mm f/2. Była to sobota lub niedziela, a na terenie dawnej koksowni kręciło się całkiem sporo umorusanych mężczyzn, którzy szabrowali wszelkie metalowe elementy. Jednak na tych kadrach ich nie widać, ponieważ wyczułem, że gdybym zechciał ich sfotografować, to by mi najnormalniej wpie*dolili. Demolition is ongoing at the Cokerie O in Belgium 🏭🇧🇪. It is an important part of our industrial heritage that will soon disappear forever, among other factories in the area, only pictures will remain. Here we have a clear view from what was the main process of this factory: coal was stocked into silos in the building on the left, then brought through the conveyor belt to the coal tower on the right in order to ‘feed’ the series of ovens at its feets. There, coal would be transformed into coke, which could serve as fuel for the blast furnaces nearby. Residents of Nongsning and Umrasong villages in East Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya, demanded immediate closure of alleged illegal coke plants operating in the surroundings. The villagers argued that these plants were responsible for rising pollution levels affecting normal life in their area. In a petition submitted to the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB), the village councils highlighted alarming air and water pollution levels attributed to these unauthorized plants. They also mentioned in the petition that the rising pollution levels put their lives at risk. The petition consisted of several other grievances, asserting that the plants operate without proper permits and flout environmental regulations. Besides, their emissions are cited for worsening air quality, potentially causing respiratory ailments among villagers. In addition, the sole water source serving both villages is purportedly contaminated due to the coke oven operations. Residents have expressed sharp discontent over the lack of effective action despite lodging repeated complaints with various authorities over the past three years. They urged the MSPCB to take immediate measures, calling for the closure of these illegal plants and opposing the issuance of new licenses. Meanwhile, a separate judicial committee constituted by the Meghalaya High Court unearthed another aspect of violations these plants were practising. The investigation found that royalty and cess over rupees two crores remained unpaid by three coke oven plants still operational in East Jaintia Hills. These plants, in order to evade government dues, source coal unlawfully. Even after that investigation, several plants are still flouting the regulations. The poster on the fridge means « Everyone brings joy in this room. Some when they enter, other when they exit » . I just heard that the last traces of the Anderlues coke plant are being destroyed at the moment. This site have already been (almost) totally demolished during the 2000’s. We had the chance in 2002 to document the last days of this beautiful old coke plant, active since 1903. A lot of parts of the plant were already disused (like this room) but the last active areas were so in bad condition that it was sometime difficult to make the difference between what was abandoned and what wasn’t. Coal ovens were getting shut down and the dismantling was beginning, as the last coal wagons were leaving the plant. Atmosphere was sad, workers were scrapping what they could before demolition, but this coking plant was clearly ageing and not up-to-date anymore. It looked like the last large modernisation of this plant have been made during the 1950’s-1960’s. Black and White film photography.

Ruda Śląska - Koksownia „Walenty” - lato 1996 Prace rozbiórkowe Koksowni „Walenty” w Rudzie Śląskiej fotografowałem intensywnie w latach 1992-1996. W 1997 roku była z tego wystawa „Pejzaż symboliczny”, pokazana jesienią w Galerii ZPAF w Krakowie. Niestety uparłem się wtedy, żeby robić zdjęcia małym obrazkiem, co nie było najszczęśliwszym pomysłem. Nie mam pojęcia, jaką funkcje pełnił widoczny na zdjęciu betonowy silos. The coffee and tea at Pipers is wonderful, but what makes a visit very special is the location. @cupofpipers occupies the Coke Plant, a former @cocacola plant that was built in 1939. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places and is also home to @drygroundbrewing and @paducahmellow. It's been one of my go-to spots for whole bean coffee and I have loved trying beverages from their specialty menu - most recently, the strawberry fields espresso tonic. 🤤

Government of Meghalaya has taken decisive action to address the issue of illegal coke plants in the state and also ensure compliance to the orders of the Hon’ble High Court of Meghalaya. Action had already been initiated against the illegal coke plats in December 2022 by shutting down the illegal plants and initiate the process of dismantling the bee-hive coke ovens to ensure that they do not become operational again. This process continued till April 2023 resulting in significant progress in eradication of these unlawful establishments. In consonance with the Government’s commitment towards enforcing the law and directives of Hon’ble High Court, unequivocal directions were issued to demolish the entire infrastructure behind these unlawful establishments and identify and prosecute the culprits behind this illegal activity. Consequently, the demolition of chimneys and other physical infrastructure of the illegal plants has commenced from the 8 th of July, 2023. 3 chimneys have been demolished till 10 th July 02023 and the work is targeted to be completed by 20 th of July. Several persons behind these illegal operations have been identified and arrested. The concrete measures and proactive steps of the government in executing these actions to dismantle the infrastructure supporting the illegal coke plants are contrary to any perception of silence on the issue. The government remains steadfast in its commitment towards upholding the rule of law and preserving the pristine environment of the state for its residents. The eradication of illegal coke plants is an essential step towards achieving these objectives and restoring the region’s ecological balance.
