Rock City is a park located on hillsides overlooking the Solomon River 3.6 miles south of Minneapolis, Kansas. In a patch of prairie about 1,600 feet long and 130 feet wide, Rock City contains three clusters of large spherical boulders. These three clusters contain a total of 200 spherical boulders. The large spherical boulders in Rock City are giant calcite-cemented concretions, typically called “cannonball concretions” because of their shape. They range in diameter from 9.8 to 19.7 feet with the average diameter being 12 feet. These concretions lie 6.6–26.2 feet apart. These boulders consist of well-sorted, medium-grained sandstone, which is tightly cemented by calcite. The sandstone consists of more than 95% quartz sand. About 20% of the original sandstone, mostly feldspar grains, has been replaced by the calcite. Pyrite occurs as microscopic crystals and small, knobby concretions about one foot in diameter. The host rock, which contained these spherical boulders, consists of well-sorted, medium-grained, highly porous, and friable sandstone.

While hiking a few years ago I ran into some truly interesting rock formations at a local nature preserve. I had never seen anything like them and was fascinated, I took lots of photos knowing that someday I would use them for an art project. Later on I did a Google search and they turned out to be Iron Oxide Concretions in our local Black Hand Sandstone. Lo and behold, one of the images that was used as an illustration was one of the exact formations I observed. Last week I made several solar plates of them for printing, and this week I had one long and satisfying print day. “What is that?” Wednesdays Ever seen a weird “blob” or irregular thing in a rock? It’s possible you saw a concretion! Concretions are masses of mineral matter embedded within stratigraphy. They often develop when minerals precipitating out of water collect around a nucleus, such as a pebble, tree, shell, or fossil. They can be round, lumpy, long, oval, disk-shaped, or irregular. They also vary in color, hardness, and size. At Martin Nature Park in OKC along a creek that cuts the Permian Hennessy Shale, you can find these special concretions called Rhizoconcretions, or fossilized tree roots! 🌳 These concretions also have a drab halo, which is caused by a zone of reduction around plant roots in an oxidizing environment due bacterial activity. 🤓 Fun fact, these Rhizoconcretions are embedded within a paleo point bar along the bank of a Permian meandering river. Les grottes de Postojna Nous avons pénétré dans le plus grand système de grottes de Slovénie, plus de 700 km de galeries sur une longueur de 20 km. D'abord en empruntant un petit train au trajet déjà spectaculaire, puis à pied. Nous avions déjà vu un certain nombre de grottes dans notre vie, mais celles-ci étaient véritablement exceptionnelles. D'abord par l'immensité du réseau, telle que dès les premiers mètres de voie ferrée apparait déjà une féérie de stalactites et stalagmites, certains ayant dû être coupés pour que les têtes des passagers ne frottent pas trop au plafond. On nous a conduit dans des salles immenses, certaines étant d'ailleurs utilisées pour des concerts de 10 000 places assises. Tout est à la fois protégé et bien mis en valeur. “Potted Concretions” (6.5” x 4”). Made with glass tile, glass rod, millefiori, crockery, unglazed porcelain and concretions. Concretions, also known as Fairy Stones, are an absolute marvel! I came across them at a gem and mineral show a few years back. These particular ones come from a very specific region in Quebec, although they can be found globally. Their peculiar shapes inspired me to put them in posh planters and create fanciful houseplants. SPÉLÉO à la grotte de Côtepatière au sud de l’Ardèche réseau de l’Aven de la Cocalière . ✨ Initiation à la spéléo d’une grotte facile pour un petit groupe d’amis randonneurs . Michel est paysan mais passe son diplôme de moniteur spéléo en 1979 afin d’encadrer bénévolement stages et sorties au sein du spéléo club d’Aubenas. C’est d’ailleurs grâce à la spéléo que nous nous rencontrons, mais ceci est une autre histoire 😉❤️ La Grotte de Côtepatière est en fait le lit d’une rivière, la Claysse qui coule lors de fortes pluies, type épisode cévenol. Réseau très vaste 14 km, nous en explorons environ 1,900 km. Vastes salles, tubes immenses, creusés par la rivière, concrétions, gours, lac… Facile et belle.
