Cut & Thirst by Margaret Atwood 🍸 Tandem Readalong [AD-PR Product] Synopsis: Myrna, Leonie, and Chrissy meet every Thursday to sample fine cheeses, to reminisce about their former lives as professors, and lately, to muse about murder. Decades ago, a vicious cabal of male poets contrived - quite publicly and successfully - to undermine the writing career, confidence, and health of their dear friend Fern. Now, after Fern has taken a turn for the worse, her three old friends decide that it’s finally time to strike back—in secret, of course, since Fern is far too gentle to approve of a vendetta. All they need is a plan with suitably Shakespearean drama. But as sweet and satisfying as revenge can be, it’s not always so cut and dried. My thoughts: I’m a huge Margaret Atwood fan - as you can tell from my shelves - so I was so excited to be invited onto this readalong. At 35 pages, it’s a super short book to gobble up in one setting. I throughly enjoying reading this one; it’s full of sharp dialogue and witticisms as is Atwood’s trademark. I can see why others have commented that they wish it were longer - and I would love to see this as a full length story - but I do think it works as it is, and is a bit of a ‘palette cleanser’ - I loved being able to sit down and just enjoy this for half an hour or so in between some longer reads. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 #CutAndThirstReadong #TandemReadalong #Readalong #ShortStory #FeministReads #MargaretAtwood #BookCommunity #NewBooks #EBook #LoveToRead #WhatImReading #BookReview #Fiction #Literature #LitFic #ReadersOfInsta

#kirjagram #kirja #kirjagramsuomi #kirjallisuus #kirjallisuudenystävät #toveditlevsen #margaretatwood

Finally, after a short break, some problems with the size of the figure and the size of the oven and the fracture of the complete body, I finished my second hand sculpted figure THE HANDMAID. I want to create the main character from the novel "the Handmaid's tale" from @therealmargaretatwood Because of this the dark hair. To create this sculpture I used Super Sculpey living doll by @sculpey_official and some useful hints from the great @aceofclay I hope you like it. #sculpey #supersculpey #margaretatwood #handmaidstale #thehandmaidstale #aceofclay #clay #claysculpture #clayart #polymerclay #offred #handmaid

Still reeling from this read. What a clever take! Three different women, three perspectives and a banger of an end to the handmaid's tale (or is it...🫣). I have to say I'm still gushing over the writing style, the simplicity and Atwood's brilliant method of taking the simplest things in your life and making it's absence your absolute nightmare. Whoa. Just whoa. *Slow Clapping* . . #thetestaments #margaretatwood #readoftheweek #pickoftheweek #bookrecap #bookrecommendations

"Water does not resist. Water flows. When you plunge your hand into it, all you feel is a caress. Water is not a solid wall, it will not stop you. But water always goes where it wants to go, and nothing in the end can stand against it. Water is patient. Dripping water wears away a stone. Remember that, my child. Remember you are half water. If you can't go through an obstacle, go around it. Water does." ~Margaret Atwood, The Penelopiad I am so grateful for the support of my community through my pregnancy and postpartum time! We have made it through the first round of CSAs, *and* I have an (almost!) 6 week old! I've learned that when my expectations don't match my reality, I should be more like water. ✨ 𝑪𝒖𝒕 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕: 𝑨 𝑺𝒉𝒐𝒓𝒕 𝑺𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒚 𝒃𝒚 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒈𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒕 𝑨𝒕𝒘𝒐𝒐𝒅 ✨ This was April’s Amazon First Read exclusive short story. I like that they are offering these now. I find short stories enjoyable and great little palate cleansers! This short story starts 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 abruptly. Rigmht in the middle of dialogue. So much so, that I had to read the first few pages about four times before I felt I understood what was going on. Perhaps not the most ideal start to a 35 page story 😂 Granted my concentration is not at its best currently, but it seems I’m not the only one who feels this way. I did find the plot humorous and witty once I got into it but I wouldn’t call the idea of ‘older’ women meeting on a Thursday to discuss murders original *𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡* Thursday Murder Club *𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡*. I found it quite confusing throughout if I’m honest. Parts were intriguing and amusing but some were… tedious, in my opinion. I’m a little disappointed as I’m a big Atwood fan but I just felt this lacked a little; although I understand what she was trying to do and I appreciated the underlying message of the story. 4/5. 2024 Book 59 - The Heart Goes Last by Margaret Atwood ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This woman is incredible. And, if you're into dystopian fiction but haven't read this, then get on it. (Here's looking at you @kelrimmerwrites) Stan and Charmaine are living in their car, pay check to pay check, surviving on next to nothing after the country has suffered an economic and social collapse. Charmaine has a job, not that it's much, but even a tiny bit of cash is excellent. Tending bar one night at work, when there is no customers, Charmaine sees an ad on TV for a new type of gated community offering security, work, and a quality lifestyle. She talks Stan into visiting and they quickly sign up. It's a good deal, working one month in the township, and one month in the Positron prison system as an inmate, so everyone contributes to the system and it cuts down housing costs is half as everyone shares their home with an "alternate" on the months they're in the prison system. Only, when you've fallen in love with your alternates husband, things are bound to get a little... problematic... Another fantastic dystopian tale from the Queen... and I find it hard to believe it's not talked about more! #books #bookstagram #margaretatwood #theheartgoeslast #2024books #audible

📚 Just finished “The Handmaid’s Tale” - This has been on my TBR for years 😅🫣📖 Margaret Atwood’s dystopian masterpiece is a chillingly prophetic tale of a society stripped of women’s rights. The narrative gripped me from start to finish, painting a harrowing picture of a future ruled by oppressive patriarchal regimes. Atwood’s writing is hauntingly beautiful, evoking a range of emotions from fear to hope. A must-read for anyone interested in thought-provoking literature that challenges societal norms. #TheHandmaidsTale #MargaretAtwood #DystopianFiction #BookReview 📖✨

Ma is várom a hallgatókat 22.10-től a Sláger FM-en, ahol a kulturális élet meghatározó alkotóival beszélgetek. A darab Homérosz Odüsszeia című eposzának, a trójai háborúnak, valamint Ithaka királynéjának, Pénelopénak Margaret Atwood általi sajátos mítoszadaptációja, drámai szerkezetbe átültetve. Izgalmas beszélgetéssel érkezünk ma is a természetes emberi hangok műsorában, a Sláger KULT-ban. Érdemes lesz velünk tartani! (Műsoraink kizárólag a Sláger Prémium reklámmentes applikáción keresztül hallgathatók vissza!) #balazszoltan #rendezo #penelopeia #maladypeszinhaz #margaretatwood #aharmadikhely #slagerfm #slagerkult #smillerandras #profipodcast @slagerfm @maladypetheatre

May’s acrostic book title poem… and as promised, it is indeed a haiku! Moral Disorder A Girl is a Half-formed Thing You Exist Too Much At least, I hope it is. I’m always unsure whether I’ve actually got it right… ever since I accidentally wrote a 7-5-7 one one time. It’s over a decade ago now, but I’m still embarrassed! I will admit I did actually have to purchase a book to make this one work. Guess which? April was a very unusual month for me - it’s rare that I travel for long or far away, so Mexico was an incredible change of pace. I’ve started May with one of the best books I’ve read for a long time - review to come soon - and its atmosphere matches so perfectly with the stormy weather we’ve been having recently. I massively appreciate it… but at the same time it’s quite an oppressive feeling. Glad to be home with the kittens in the warmth with the rain outside, nonetheless. Atwood dobrze to wymyśliła.

#elcuentodelacriada #margaretatwood #distopia #leeresvivir #librosrecomendados #librosclasicos #librosimperdibles

”Every night when I go to bed I think, In the morning I will wake up in my own house and things will be back the way they were.

Yesterday I visited a garden. When I observed the tulips lossing their petals, I told myself that they had seen their prime days. This thought didn't make me feel sad or happy either. I believe that I accepted that. . . Today when I was at the chapter 25 of Margaret Atwood's 'The Handmaid's Tale'. I was surprised to read the phrase: "That was in May. Spring has now been undergone. The tulips have had their moment and are done, shedding their petals one by one, like teeth" . . Now, I remind myself the golden saying 'Nothing is permanent'. Everyone will experience a moment in their lives and it will pass. Embracing that would help us stay grounded. *Twelve Books on Tuesday (Book Club Edition)* Yes I know it’s Thursday but life has got in the way of me posting this before now. My in person book club will be celebrating its 20th birthday next year and to recognise that achievement here is a flatlay of just a fraction of the books we have read during that time. Most of us were strangers when we first met, but brought together. over the years, via adverts in workplaces, gumtree and acquaintances we are now firm friends. Having seen each through many major life events over the years I can’t actually imagine my life with these ladies not in it. I do have to admit to our monthly meetings now being more of an excuse to catch up than discussing a book. But I do have book club to thank for introducing me to all sorts of books I wouldn’t have read otherwise. #twelvebooksontuesday #twelvebooks #bookishflatlay #bookrecommendations #margaretatwood #bookclub #bookishpost #bookishcommunity #lovebooks #lovereading #booksbooksbooks #bookworm #avidreader #alwaysreading #bookstagram #postoftheday #fictionbooks

🌿May TBR! 📚 🌸During the month of May, I’m hoping to get through 10 books, and make significant headway on The Count of Monte Cristo. I’m really happy with the list I put together, and I even have some spring-themed books to enjoy, and a new release! 📋On my list, I have: Science Fiction: Neuromancer by William Gibson Horror: Lone Women by Victor LaValle Cottagecore: We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson (Reread) Mystery/Thriller: Surfacing by Margaret Atwood Literature: The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt Bonus #1: Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney Stephen King: You Like it Darker (Out 5/21) Bonus #2: The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides Children’s Classics: Matilda by Roald Dahl Howl’s Moving Castle: Castle in the Air ( #2) by Diana Wynne Jones 🧘‍♀️In addition to hopefully getting through these titles and reading about 100+ pages of Monte Cristo, I intend to allow myself to relax over my weekends. I am constantly burning myself out, and overscheduling, SO yeah I want to do less. I hope everyone has a charming May and let me know what you are most excited to read this month! #bookstagram #bookstack #maytbr #may #spring #neuromancer #williamgibson #lonewomen #victorlavalle #wehavealwayslivedinthecastle #shirleyjackson #surfacing #margaretatwood #thegoldfinch #donnatartt #conversationswithfriends #sallyrooney #youlikeitdarker #stephenking #horror #thevirginsuicides #jeffreyeugenides #matilda #roalddahl #castleintheair #dianawynnejones

I’ve been busy with work and a mini identity crisis so this is the first time I’ve picked up a book and read in what feels like an age. My second Margaret Atwood. I still think about the Handmaid’s Tale frequently and I have a feeling that Alias Grace will leave me in a similar state of mind. Grace Marks, a notorious nineteenth century servant, was an accomplice to the murder of her employer and his mistress - or so they say, because Grace claims she has no memory of the crime. She is now serving a life sentence. But along comes Dr. Gordon, dipping his toes into the field of mental illness comes on the scene and wishes to treat Grace, hoping to unlock her memory and find out if she is truly innocent. As I expected, Atwood’s writing is divine, and I’m eating her his book up because I desperately want to know Grace’ fate. Also, in my true fashion, I find myself on Grace’s side already.

Again, the “Parable” sequel is written in long-form diaristic entries. It has a protagonist who resorts to writing when all else fails. One of the major parts of the novel is the 17-month internment of Lauren and her people at the hands of a Christian American fundamentalist group—and in that moment, it is as if Lauren is a fictional reminder of the late diarist, Anne Frank. Monographs on the internet agree with me that at that specific point, it feels reminiscent of Margaret Atwood’s 1985 dystopian novel, “The Handmaid’s Tale.” While we are here, dare I also recommend my home country’s national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal’s two historical fiction novels, “Noli Me Tangere” and its sequel, “El Filibusterismo,” which transpire amid the 19th-century Spanish colonial period in the Philippines. In 1887, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle issued his first Sherlock Holmes story, “A Study in Scarlet;” it was also the same year Dr. Rizal published “Noli.” The two classic novels, albeit in dissimilar genres, are telltale satirical exposure of covert egregious practices by established religions. So are “The Handmaid’s Tale,” and “Parable of the Talents.” Please note that this review is by no means a diss to religions, and rest assured that I am still a believer after reading all these books, as blind faith is honestly something I hold onto most nowadays—it is just truly the plot of these previously banned novels. To quote Atwood, ‘No, no. Religion in itself does not create these behaviors. It’s [that] people appropriate religion and use it to shut other people down.’ My recommendations are dark, I know. Despite the depressing pretext, however—there is something about the characters overcoming a tough thing together in dystopian books that makes it so engaging, no? Best believe that “Parable of the Talents” has a happy ending; albeit a zero-sum one, which “Monsters: A Fan’s Dilemma” by Claire Dederer will understand. Without fail, 5/5⭐

Cut and Thirst, published on 1st May on Amazon Original Stories by Margaret Atwood is a strangely humorous short story. There are three old ladies, I would rather say three scheming ladies thirsty for revenge. Myrna, Leonie and Chrissy live in an upper class neighborhood of Toranto and they meet every Thursday to nibble on cheese, drink their wine, chat, banter and most interestingly plotting about a few murders. Well, the story may seem a little serious or dark but in fact, I found it quite quirky. The women are old and believe in Shakespearean tragic revenge so they keep planning against a few misogynistic men who tried to devalue their beloved friend Fern who is severely ill at this moment. I absolutely loved this short story where girlfriends chat and eat. It reminded me of my old friends from college and our fun and frolicking (oh! how badly I miss them). Despite being a short read, it made me muse over it for a whole day, that is the magic of Atwood. I wanted more of the old ladies. I never miss the chance of reading anything by Margaret Atwood. Yes, I will read whatever she writes, even if that's an advertising jingle.

BOOK REVIEW: Cut and Thirst: A Short Story by Margaret Atwood Started off a bit confusing; got better as I continued to read. A bit of humor as three friends plot revenge for a dear friend. Not a bad read, was satisfied after I read it but wouldn’t buy a copy. Reviewed by Comfy Chair Books/Lisa Reigel (May 1, 2024) Free eBook via Amazon First Reads Program #CutAndThirst #MargaretAtwood #AmazonOriginalStory #ShortStory #HumurousFiction #Friendship Blurb: Three women scheme to avenge an old friend in a darkly witty short story about loyalty, ambition, and delicious retribution by Margaret Atwood, the #1 bestselling author of The Handmaid’s Tale. Myrna, Leonie, and Chrissy meet every Thursday to sample fine cheeses, to reminisce about their former lives as professors, and lately, to muse about murder. Decades ago, a vicious cabal of male poets contrived—quite publicly and successfully—to undermine the writing career, confidence, and health of their dear friend Fern.
